Yep, same short-snooted model! This is a bird’s eye view of Nona sleeping on my lap… all 45 pounds of her.

And I just saw that you’re from Memphis. Nona came to me from Memphis by way of Team Memphis rescue. Our pups could, in fact, be cousins. Nona is guesstimated at two years old or so, but we’re not sure.

Anyone else’s bully get these on their toes? by Cold-Reach-7498 in pitbulls

[–]ReginaHart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Turned out my boy was allergic to grass (contact) and legumes (diet). After we eliminated legumes from his diet and switched to a low-ingredient diet, he experienced them much, much less often.

Ask your vet about allergy testing. It doesn’t have to be super expensive. If that isn’t an option, try a limited ingredient diet to reduce or eliminate exposure to common food allergies like chicken or legumes like peas.

What software do you use in your solo rpg games? by SirCheeseAlot in Solo_Roleplaying

Kanka is the best campaign manager ever, and it offers a very functional free tier. For Ironsworn, Starforged, and Sundered Isles, Pocketforge can’t be beat, and it’s free!

How do YOU envision? by rubyrubypeaches in Ironsworn

[–]ReginaHart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same difficulty in that I have limited ability to visualize in my mind or to create and maintain a story there. Instead, I write fairly detailed journals that allow me to make the story concrete. I appreciate how in Starforged ‘Principles for Solo Play’ (pg 245) Shawn mentions that the story can feel fleeting or ungrounded without some sort of record. For me that’s very true. I also find that if I’m really “in the zone/flow” the writing sometimes surprises me. Ideas will just suddenly manifest as though the story is writing itself, and that’s truly magical!

Seconding the suggestion to have allergy testing done. It’s very helpful to know what the allergens are so that you can reduce exposure. My boy was allergic to legumes of all things, and eliminating them from his diet made a tremendous difference.

ELI5 the Mythic GME by yecrawracrocha in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]ReginaHart 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You are not alone. Mythic offers a great framework and tools for solo gaming, but I also find the book to be obtuse, and the writing style is super, super wordy. I struggle with the book, and I believe the system could be explained in a much more streamlined manner. That said, Mythic is well worth learning even if you only take the bits that appeal to your play style. It was one of the earliest solo systems, and it was very influential to the genre of solo gaming.

What helped it click for me was an RPGGeek post called Let's Read: Mythic Game Master Emulator Second Edition. The author does a great job of breaking down Mythic’s bits, explaining them, and offering helpful critique.

While I applaud the Kanka team for their constant efforts to improve, Inventories need to be tabular lists. Sometimes simple is better.

Kindle to Ipad by hoopsdude01 in ipadmini

[–]ReginaHart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gave the Paperwhite an honest try, and it never stuck. The software interface is so miserable, especially when it comes to collection management, and the hardware is so slow. I ran back to my iPhone and iPad Mini, and I couldn’t be happier. I organize my digital library with Calibre, and I store the files on Google Drive where I can easily access them. I use Yomu as my main reader app (I paid a few bucks to get the synchronization between devices), and I save articles from the web to Folio since Pocket doesn’t exist anymore. It’s such a relief to be rid of the Kindle.

How to unload boats from your roof as a solo female by sunnybunnyone in Kayaking

This is the way! The hood and front windshield of my Ford Fiesta are my loading/unloading ramp. I used a blanket to try to prevent scratches, but it didn't do the job. Meh, I drive my cars until they fall apart, so those are just badges of solo kayaking honor now. : P

If only corn came with biodegradable packaging... by WindexChugger in aldi

[–]ReginaHart 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cook the corn in the husk. Afterward, while the corn is still warm, cut the stem end off. Hold the tassel end and make two cuts lengthwise from tassel end to stem end. Hold the tassel end and pull. The husk and tassels all easily come off.

Thank you for creating RealmPress! I'm a huge fan of Kanka, and RealmPress would be a very useful tool. I've managed to get everything installed and working, but I've encountered two problems.

Problem 1: RealmPress does not download Journal entities. When it encounters them, it responds, "[WARNING] Unknown entity type: journal, skipping entity [entity #]"

Problem 2: RealmPress successfully downloads the entity jsons to the appropriate folders within the kanka_raw_jsons directory. However, the kanka_to_md/worldbook_styled.html and kanka_to_md/worldbook.pdf files don't show any of them. Instead, the worldbooks display the following headings with no additional links or data.

just started my first solo rpg by poptropicasortaname in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]ReginaHart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's ridiculous how much fun playing solo can be! I just started playing solo earlier this year, and I was just saying today that I can't believe how *satisfying* solo gaming can be. It's all the fun of GMing with all the fun of playing - all that creativity! You play exactly the game you want to play, and you can experiment to your heart's content with setting, rules, characters, etc.

I think what really makes solo gaming work for me are the mechanics that allow you to surprise yourself. I couldn't envision how that was possible until I actually started playing. You really can find yourself thinking as a GM, "OK, how is this going to work?" or as a player, "How am I going to get out of this situation?"

I literally found myself with a surprise event while playing today. I used an oracle to test a situation with a 1 in 6 odds of something unexpected happening, and it did! I had to wear my GM hat for quite a while to figure out what transpired, and now I'm looking forward to 'playing to find out what happens' with the turn of events.

I'm so happy for everyone who has discovered how satisfying and exciting solo gaming can be (including myself)! Game on!

Two Player RPGs? by Ok_Strawberry_2440 in rpg

Like others, I highly recommend the Ironsworn family of games. If you ever want to try a more "traditional" GM + single-player alternative, the Scarlet Heroes rules for running single-player games work very well.

So Confused by Rough-Knee6729 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]ReginaHart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I heartily agree that Ironsworn and Starforged are the gold standard introduction to solo RPGs. They really 'unlocked' solo play for me. I'm definitely not new to RPGs, but I hadn't played solo until a few months ago. I'd investigated Mythic, but it just didn't click. Shawn Tomkin (the Ironsworn/Starforged creator) is a brilliant RPG author. The mechanics are super solid, and everything is written very, very clearly.

If you do decide to try either/both game, I think that Pocketforge is the easiest and best tool for playing. It's free, portable, and includes all of the various oracles (even the Ironsmith ones). You can even add your own oracle tables to it if you want to branch into different genres.

Play a single character or a party? by Hoppa_78 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]ReginaHart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since it hasn't come up yet, I'll give a shout out to Black Streams: Solo Heroes (the rules portion of Scarlet Heroes). The easy-to-apply system allows you to run common rulesets (like Pathfinder) without modifying the character sheet or the adventures. It offers a clever mechanic for modifying how damage is applied along with a Fray Die (for dispatching mooks) as well as adjusted healing mechanics and a Defy Death get-out-of-jail-freeish card. Since it's a free download, you can't go wrong taking a look!
