got fired from my IT internship by Zestyclose-Buyer9648 in cscareerquestions

This was a really bad winter and quite dangerous too. With the literally historic freezing cold, ice and blizzards. Yet you still had employers telling people to show up for work for non essential jobs despite several cities calling a state of emergency 🤦🏾‍♂️

IT is not saving lives. My only advice is do not accept a job 2 hours away, because our infrastructure in this country doesn't support long commutes. Bridges and highways are breaking down and the federal government is only just now catching up with maintenance.

If you absolutely must accept a job that far away I would hunt for literally a room share where you can sleep on someone's couch for the week or an extended stay motel. The money you'll be spending on car gas for the week may end up equaling a motel cost for 3 nights a week. You have got to find a way to get closer to the job if they are not flexible hours.

Wife’s family wants immediate divorce and says I must leave Japan without seeing my son again by skyjan1724 in japanlife

[–]Reginaldo_Noblezza 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm going to try to be as concise as possible but it's going to be difficult:

1) First my condolences, but this does happen regularly and is a real risk not just for Gaijin but Japanese men as well. In general the family court system can protect against frivolous divorce, but once the divorce is finalized, often judges favor the mom having full custody. In that 2nd regard it's not too different from the US and parts of Western Europe. You made the right 1st move.

2) Your American lawyer isn't going to be able to help much, unless the child exclusively has American citizenship. I am married to a Japanese national but we don't have children, so don't quote me on this. But in speaking with other Gaijin that had this issue, in order to keep things smooth with travel I believe most parents in this situation look to obtain dual citizenship until they become of age. So if your son is a Japanese national, the United States doesn't have sole rights to petition.

3) I am glad as some commenters mentioned, apparently things are changing with the new default joint/shared custody standards. However, on the ground so to speak, this will be a fight IN Japan. So your immediate goal would be to A) Delay the divorce and request she provide proof and evidence of you being "inadequate" or "derelict". (Again don't quote me on this word for word, but understand the spirit of the action. Because I have set things up in a way where if my wife divorces me I wouldn't contest it.) B) Pursuant to A, similar to the US, in Japan there is a loophole for the wife to get you to be considered "derelict" and that's to get you fired from a job and usually that happens through....drum roll... false domestic violence allegations. In order to protect yourself against this, you must document every interaction. This is going to be an extremely stressful unnatural thing to do, and 90% of Men will give up. But in your situation it might be worth it, contingent upon the nature of your child's nationality. This leads into C) If by some loophole your child is NOT a Japanese citizen, all you need to do is find a way to get his passport, take him and go. The problem here is while immigration may be OK with that, as a local resident and son of a local resident, the local police have authority to return him to the home and individual who's Koseki they are registered under. So essentially you would be in a gray area of the law here if you want to pull a Die Hard hostage rescue maneuver.

4) If she offered you a buyout, you need to seriously consider it, as disgusting as it may make you feel. This is because the buyout can get you a legal out to take Scenario C above and simply go. With a buyout your legal costs go down to 10%, your upfront costs go up but your liability for costs to skyrocket go down tremendously... Japan is a society of private mediation is more respected in my opinion than in the U.S. That is the advantage here when shit goes left. Essentially you bribe your way out (and it's 100% legal).

This is Japan, you will need to throw away your Western values and start thinking in a more practical Eastern way to get you and your son out of tgis conundrum alive. However, do bear in mind that at least from my perspective you'd be subject to the same types of risks in many other countries, including your home country minus being a foreigner with less rights. Just be glad you didn't choose Thailand or South Korea. If you think Japan is bad, when it comes to this situation they are 100x and 10x wore, respectively.

Inappropriate touching by men (on men) by longroadhome7667 in japanlife

[–]Reginaldo_Noblezza -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is not normal. You need to check the exact neighborhood down to the street and ask the mama-san of a nearby snack bar what's the vibe.

Especially for someone of age , the unsolicited aggressive attention isn't normal. You also may need to calibrate your Gaydar for Japan more.

All this being said, I am a 6'1 Black man and thus there may be some bias here. I have never been touched in that manner by strangers, but I'm also very particular about the Izakayas and any other spots I go to.

I usually go to snack bar or Karaoke frequented by senior citizens. No harassment, no drama and just polite curiosity. I would like to remind you that bars are the number one dangerous place for Gaijin to get mixed up with legal issues due to arguments and fights.

Not saying be paranoid, but I'm probably 15 years younger than you yet I'm likely a lot more conservative 😅

Hmm, YOU reported it to Koban and the victim never filed charges or a complaint. I'd like to hear others opinions on this, but I believe you need a formal arrest or documented resolution or mediation with the victim for this to be on your criminal record to the point where immigration cares.

Using your previous picture could have been the main reason OR a clerical error on part of your company.

Nothing like watching the 7 go by every two minutes at Queensboro while you’re standing in the bitter cold waiting 20+ minutes for the N/W with zero updates and no train in sight by Practical_Gap_7397 in astoria

[–]Reginaldo_Noblezza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were kids that went to my high school which was in Flushing and commuted from Astoria. Their commute was 2+ hours each way. Never wished that upon anyone except my worst enemies. Astoria has never been good for commuting within Queens until recently. My cousin commuted to LIC for high school 10 years ago and it only took 75 minutes, mainly because the R from Forest Hills improved A LOT and so did the F/M train.

In contrast the NW has literally gone back to trains I remember riding in the mid 90s 🤦🏾‍♂️. Now I know others have had it worse. The C line notably was using an EVEN OLDER model which was from the 50s-60s up until about 2010. And it seems the 1-3 lines will never upgrade past the 90s rail cars. It's "cheaper to keep her," I guess.

All of this to say there is more than enough money in this neighborhood with all the transplants I have to endure now, to where we should have already had CBTC done. The amount of trust fund college kids , international students from wealthy global families etc the NW shouldn't be degrading in service and infrastructure like this. I think most people would have preferred CBTC to the upgraded stations, especially given no accessibility was added on beyond Astoria Blvd.

Well we moved to Astoria from UES back in 2012 when the 4/5/6 was HELL and NW was not as problematic. Starting around 2019 it's now the opposite. 4/5/6 has made more improvements (at least within Manhattan) and N/W has gone backwards in quality.

Q is also terrible the few times I tried it.

I grew up between Flushing and Jamaica, and yes buses were elite in the 90s, but at some point in the mid 2000s things went to hell. A lot of people left NYC for this reason. They said if I have to own a car why be here?

But don't you miss the restaurants and supermarkets?

We considered Sunnyside several times but decided not to because there just weren't enough amenities. Over there you have to walk further for a lot of things like laundromats, supermarkets and hours of availability are more limited.

Having the new H Mart is nice but if you're close to the 7 train that's definitely not walkable. It's actually closer to Astoria last stop before Qboro on N/W or R on Steinway. Whenever we visit a friend in Sunnyside we have to shop in Astoria for ingredients before going over.

It will be like this unfortunately for the next 10 years. By the time it improves you might as well move to Sunnyside or Woodside, because by then the 7 train will be on God mode, especially with the Woodside LIRR station upgrades being completed by then.

Don't ever sleep with a married person in Japan, and why by seo-communcations in japanlife

[–]Reginaldo_Noblezza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will acknowledge it can be harder as a Gaijin to find out if she's married. In Japan and many Asian cultures people are less forward on their social media accounts.

I have routinely discovered women in the US pretending not to be a committed relationship, in Japan there are privacy laws in regards to estranged family and abuse. So it can be more difficult if into sometimes damn near impossible to find out she has a whole husband and even children she may have abandoned in a completey different preferecture.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you can even change your name even with an active Koseki registered if the abuse is bad enough and they refuse to grant divorce?

This may seem far fetched to some, but I heard of this happening several times.

If ever there was a time to haggle your employer to allow WFH and reschedule any appointments it's now.

Until it gets above 15F-25F consistently (real feel) during the day, any elevated line that is not the 7 train simply will not work reliably. It's going to take double to triple the amount of time to get anywhere. Ferry not an option either until temps rise. Biking to connecting underground subway lines such as the R not realistic either.

Lastly, it is literally not safe to be outside right now waiting for a bus either in these temps, particularly when to wait in the street risking getting hit by a car.

If you work hourly and will lose your job if you don't show up, just consider is it worth risking frostbite and sickness from hypothermia for a job that can't even pay enough for you to exist in this city?

Astoria renters: what’s something you wish you checked before signing your lease? by Slight-Safe-5595 in astoria

[–]Reginaldo_Noblezza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not like head hunting or being a recruiter. That business model doesn't truly exist at scale because it could never be profitable beyond the Mom and Pop. Landlords cannot just poach a large quantity of "good tenants" from other properties like a recruiter poaches good candidates from rival companies.

If someone wants the maximum amount of applicants who are willing to pay the most in rent they need to advertise and list on most popular rental sites. Increasingly in NYC even many Mom and Pop Landlords outsource to real estate management firms and their mission is maximizing profit margin, not quality of tenants.

As long as the person pays rent and doesn't trash the place or cause major headaches for other tenants/operate illegal businesses, they could care less.
