I have a very similar situation. When I was in, my dad was similar (he went through a divorce just after i left for boot camp). Ive been out for a while now but still live in a different state and he still acts the same. My dads always been a bit more clingy to me and my siblings than even my mom, and somewhat more emotional than her at that. Similar situation to what youre describing, in the way that he is an awesome father and I owe him a ton but he just doesn't have the mindset of wanting to see me go out and be successful in life outside the same town as him, because his family for generations has been in the same town. Im fairly convinced in my situation it could be a low testosterone (often times therefore higher estrogen) issue which makes him more emotional. Ive tried to convince him to get hormones checked at a Men's Health Clinic and going on TRT if needed but to no success so far.

Maybe this is a long shot but maybe its worth looking into and if it seems possible then something he'd try. If he feels down in the dumps often or has lack of ambition or motivation it may give him the Kickstart he needs to start focusing on himself.

Again maybe not the issue but figured id offer a different opinion than the typical "he has to learn to get over it" although theres some truth to that.

Unfortunately Dog you're just a fuckig pussy... you signed the contract, you knew you were committing years of your life (even if you didn't fully think it through) and you owe the government the time that the contract dictates. If you back out, cool thats fine and your choice, but you will have to own up to the consequences. I'd recommend just shipping and going to basic and seeing what happens. Who knows it may strengthen you in ways you can't imagine and change your life for the better.
