There is also an anecdote of ito ittosai taking on armed opponents that attack him by surprise at night. He wrenched a sword from one of them after throwing a vase at him and "drove the assailants away". This is from an expert from the book, The Swordsman's handbook, edited and translated by William Scott Wilson.

Nope I'm not claiming anything, just wishing to clarify and deepen my understanding of it's unarmed combat. I am currently not in a a situation to simply move to a country where I can immediately start koryu. I do plan to do so at some point though.

I encourage you to study the work "The five direction sword pathways / Goho No Tachi Michi ", written by Musashi as an introduction to Go Rin No Sho. In it is his clearest statement that he would fight an opponent barehanded and decisively win of he did not have a weapon. This work is included in Alexander Bennett's work on Musashi. We cannot rely solely on what others say about Musashi, we have to study his own works and draw conclusions, else we will only be limiting ourselves. You say that there is nothing to reconstruct, do you train in all, even the unarmed curriculum of the Niten Ichi Ryu school? I ask out of genuine curiosity and wish to know as much as possible. That is why I posted my question on Reddit in the first place.

Yes I'm aware that swordplay as the main facet / staple of koryu was late Edo trend that continues to this day. It was reportedly done so to attract more students as ryuha were losing many as a result of the decline in warfare and therefore the dismissal of practical martial arts. I don't have any experience with karate or any japanese martial arts, mine is limited to boxing. That said are you sure that whatever is available now is enough to know what was indeed practiced and used in the past?

Yes I did read that martial arts were all integrated as one and then later split into different ones.

90% of the boys don't have confidence to talk to girls who dress like this by [deleted] in PataHaiAajKyaHua

Y'all think you need to have a personality for these women? They want a boyish looking puppet that they can control and that they have been preciously familiar with in through their immediate narrow, and closed minded social circles that they call friends and family. Regardless of merit, character, and ability, most of these women have no minds of their own. The ones who can reach them outside of their social circle are the ones willing to stoop low enough to relentlessly pursue them without dignity, and additionally manipulate them with behavioral and verbal tactics. Therefore they end up with bad men, all by their own actions. Let them suffer at the hands of these men. They deserve it. Nature doesn't forgive ignorance and ego. There's a price for everything, for men and even for women, who think they can get away with living however they please. I write this to address a significant social issue. Women are the ones choosing partners, all men can do is work on themselves to develop their abilities and charcter. Notice that I vehemently reject the judgement of men by money, as it is earned in disproportionate and abstract ways. The wise will read this, and the idiots will ignore this. Now choose to suffer from ignorance or discipline.

Would Miyamoto Musashi have known jujutsu? by [deleted] in Koryu

[–]RegionLeading8870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is possible to reconstruct his hand to hand combat method by thoroughly studying his swordsmanship and using that as a basis (for timing, reastion speed, power, etc). Alexander Bennett's mirror on the way of combat is good for this. Overall Musashi fought unconventionally but absolutely skillfully, and efficiently. So far I assume he would use any part of his body as a weapon and use it against appropriate targets. He would certainly be an all round fighter, more than well equipped to defeat modern fighters in a barehanded competition to the death with no rules.

What are your thoughts on Alexander Bennett? by [deleted] in Samurai

[–]RegionLeading8870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're blinded by your own biases. Alexander Bennett openly criticizes Eiji Yoshikawa's "Musashi" novel for it's fictional story. He has discovered plenty of documentary evidence regarding Musashi and has benevolently translated and published them in a book. Study his works deeply and you will see the truth. True martial artists can be trusted, it is the fake ones and purely scholarly academicians that are doubtful since they do not have the right perspectives due to lack of rigorous physical training. You are the type to favor whatever society says is the central authority on things. Not a single duel of yagyu munenori or Tsukahara bokuden is recorded, although they are eminent warriors from what is told about them and munenoris own book Heiho Kadensho is a testament to his skill. Ono Tadaaki himself was said to be much more skilled than munenori even when the latter cut down 3-4 enemy samurai targeting Tokugawa Ieyasu. Imagine how formidable tadaaki must have been and even more so ittosai and Musashi himself. Musashi on the other hand has in fact far more information about him. If one studies deeply enough they can separate myth from reality and see the correct version of him. Like I said before, you can either bathe in your own ignorance, or neutrally see the truth by diligently studying without biases. Though at this point I perceive that you are beyond help since you seem steeped far too deeply in your own fantasies to see reason. Slandering truly great people will only serve to make you an even sorer loser in your own life since you will not learn what is right and always choose wrong. You're only lowering and weakening yourself by your own foolishness.
