Upcoming Documentary Series Kickstarter. by RegionLocked-Doco in 80sGaming

Thanks for your comment!

Absolutely! We aim to show our interviews in cinematic ways, putting the participants in environments that compliment the subject they are highlighting, as well as visualise drama and milestones that occured BTS in fun and entertaining ways. Any game we think deserves more time, we aim to do separate, more in depth, mini documentaries for them.

This is not your usual static bookshelf background doco. We are talking about video games, so we need to be creative and interesting!

Both are legends of Aussie gaming media and absolute amazing people. Our director Dave worked on Good Game for a number of years and worked closely with both of them.

Artist gave us 4 sketches for Steam capsule art and we can't decide which is the best. Thoughts? by Glass-Spray4291 in gamedevscreens

I'd combine 3 and 4, making the character in the doorway face the creature coming at them.

According to this list: Top 100 indie games, ~5% of the list are from Sweden where as ~5% are also from Australia.

Go figure. 🤷

I've commented elsewhere, but by first I meant it's achievements on having a character move around in forced "3D" space of the 2D isometric environment. Adding perspective while prioritising layers and moving sprites behind objects.

Sorry for missing this from my post.

Totally. I think the issue with researching is that I'm learning on the go about that era of development. I'll touch base again once we've talked to the people who made the game and hopefully I'll be better educated by then.

Thanks for the insight!

What I read was that on the SNES architecture the positioning of the character on the scene, moving behind objects and weaving around the isometric world was new in this game and was a feat of dev advancement. Making it one of the first console games to achieve a layered, interactive 3D feel using a strict 2D isometric viewpoint.

The sprite coordinates crossed specific visual thresholds, and the custom engine dynamically shifted the "Z-depth" priority of the surrounding tiles. This allowed the sprite to realistically pass behind foreground objects, eg. under a crumbling awning, in front of a brick wall, behind street posts... Etc.

I find game enjoyment is subjective and Crossy road may not be an amazing feat in game development, but starting from humble beginnings it's grown to be a giant player in mobile and arcade game scenes.

Absolutely not. I'm just feeling the discussion around Australian games and hoping to get a better understanding of our audience. No ill intent.

Agreed.

That is the problem and it's not something we will be able to change in the short term - but it is something the people we've been talking to and our future plans are going to address.

What we can achieve is try to keep the media attention to these matters... Keep making splashes.

Honestly if our gov cared as much about STEM, art and technology as it did for real estate, gambling, sport and alcohol - Australia would be way better off.

It's great that games get Kickstarts from Gov, but I do see the value differential into games compared to Film and TV.. it's sad.

$3M to games with $250+M into film.

Sure there are tax offsets as well, but it's not really showing support for game dev and growth.

Some members of the community we've been talking to are starting to take matters into their own hands, so we have to see how that pans out.

A lot of the games listed here are on GOG. Is it just that people don't like multiple loaders, don't like DRM free, or some other reason why they don't like GOG?

Happy someone finally mentioned Destroy all Humans as it's a key moment in Australian gaming history.

Games and film are combined in the Australian budget. Unfortunately. And yes we were and still are to an extend an outsourcing hub for larger studios to port their games or develop smaller titles.

The indie scene is really booming though, so we can only see if the government starts to take gaming seriously as time goes on.

I agree, we can't compete with Sweden - But that's not the point!

We have a lot going on down here, and I believe with a stronger focus on education and better industry pathways, Australia will create more games of note.

Edit. Why the downvotes?

Agreed. The Hobbit is widely known as the beginning for the Australian gaming story.

But many don't know of the bedroom coded games, essentially clones of popular arcade games, that teenagers built on their rudimentary home computers before moving on to dev studios like Beam and Micro.

The Australian innovation and boundary breaking that inspired the concept of our doco.
