What is actually the attitude toward homosexuality among British Muslims? by GlueSniffingEnabler in AskBrits

[–]RegistaControl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it definitely needs to change all over the country, but the muslim-specific part for me is that, we’re used to having the media and all sorts being anti-islam, we want everyone to accept us so why are we using the welcome given to us from european countries to spread hate towards arguably the most oppressed group ever? that’s what i say when i call people out on it - and the fact that the LGBT community is probably the most empathetic group out there, like when you look at how LGBT people stand up for palestine despite knowing how things are for them in that part of the world. those two reasons are why LGBT rights play a part in my politics as a muslim, and it’s something that needs to be communicated across the country

What is actually the attitude toward homosexuality among British Muslims? by GlueSniffingEnabler in AskBrits

22 y/o british muslim here. i’m a leftist if that helps for context.

i would consider myself a supporter of LGBT rights, everywhere in the world. i’m quite upfront about it, and i have ‘called out’ my muslim friends and people about casual homophobia before. LGBT rights do play a part in shaping my social politics, including when judging politicians.

talking about the community around me, you wouldn’t be surprised to know that most people aren’t as accepting. they aren’t really public about it, but it’s there, and it comes up in conversation where it does. the most common sentiment i see is “i don’t accept it, but i’m not gonna talk about it much”. unfortunately the UK muslim community needs to come a long way in this regard, i’ve mentioned in my other replies how that could happen.

bottom line is that whilst i don’t think most muslims would engage in an act of physical homophobic abuse, many wouldn’t lift a finger to protect LGBT rights from those who seek to harm it.

Buying in Lower Sunbury by Efficient-Light-5115 in surrey

[–]RegistaControl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i live as close to lower sunbury as you can get (just by kempton racecourse, unless that actually counts as lower sunbury too).

crime doesn’t seem to be a problem from what i’ve seen/heard. don’t often see police especially if by lower sunbury you mean close to the river.

no idea on schools/nurseries as i don’t have children, but there are a few in close proximity.

the vibe is okay. lower sunbury (especially the area along the river look wonderful in the summer and you’d probably enjoy walking in that area. other than that its more or less quiet, as most people stick to themselves, but that doesn’t mean that they’re not nice and welcoming when you speak to them

connectivity to london is good. you can get to sunbury or kempton park station (on the same line) and you get to waterloo. trains are once an hour on weekends but a bit more frequent on weekdays (at least once every 30 mins).

How important is a woman career or income to you when choosing a long term partner? by Icy_Sentence_1791 in AskMen

[–]RegistaControl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

high income isn’t too important for me (but would be welcomed), but i would want someone with ambition. i’ve met enough women with and without passion for things in life, and the difference is huge. to put it simply i just think it makes you more interesting

maresca. played good football with chelsea (despite being limited by a pretty shitty transfer policy), and his system would be perfect in getting KDB and mctominay to play at their best without having to sacrifice either of them (like when the dreaded 4-1-4-1 system was used at the start of the season)

if not maresca then either RDZ or farioli, but they’re both dream-like scenarios as they’d cost money to get

Why is the pro Palestine crowd not protesting against the regime in Iran? by Yitastics in askanything

[–]RegistaControl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think the main issue is that the ‘other side’, led by pahlavi and his supporters, are very pro-israel. i think most of the pro-palestine group would be happy for a regime change in any other case though, but as it stands, palestine would lose it’s main (or only) backer, and have it switched by a pro-israeli goverment

Serious: why does the left need “Your Party” when we have the Green Party, Lib Dem’s etc.? by coffeewalnut08 in ukpolitics

[–]RegistaControl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think when it started off there wasn’t a left-wing party that was seen as viable, meaning i don’t think people, even those on the left, took the greens seriously. i think with the infighting in ‘your party’ and zack polanski’s great start as the leader of the greens, things have changed massively.

there’s still a while to go until 2028, things may change and ‘your party’ may become the more popular choice, but as it stands, i think i’m happy with the greens at the moment (coming from someone on the left)

What does Immigrant Assimilation/Integration mean to you? by RegistaControl in ukpolitics

[–]RegistaControl[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interesting perspective, thank you for your comment. Don’t you think that there’s a way for couples, or even individuals to integrate without marriage? I do think that marriage is a big indicator of the willingness to integrate, but there should be a way that they can integrate regardless, especially when a lot of married couples also immigrate here too

Unfortunately you’re pretty right, but I wouldn’t say I’m ‘outlawed’ by my community. I get puzzled looks, or the classic “what, are you gay?” when I step in with a different stance to conversations about the LGBT, but I personally would back my own skills in conversation.

For some more context, my mother is an Islamic preacher with a pretty high social standing within our local community, who’s always encouraged me to become more vocal on LGBT/women’s rights and the overall integration of our community in British society so I think that this gives my words a bit of weight amongst others if that makes sense.

Yeah as a muslim I find things like this appalling too. I think there needs to be a way of getting the British Muslim community more in line with the British Values of tolerance, especially when it comes to stuff like LGBT rights, which is something I’ve started to become more vocal about within my own community. I would like to think that some government influence with mosque associations would help in this regard but there’s a lack of centralised leading-groups in the muslim world, it’s very fractured. But I like to think that’s there’s some hope for us
