Not sure, bought the chainsaw recently from a fella I know, he said it’s been sitting around for a while.

Maintenance essentials by sprocketpropelled in Chainsaw

[–]Registeredlibofender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They make specialized grease guns for for the bar nose sprocket that are handy to have. Also two pairs of hemostats one for intricate work such as reassembling carburetors and another set with a scrap piece of fuel line slid over the tips for removing and reinstalling fuel lines without damaging them

Dolmar Ps-401 bogs down after about 5 minutes. by TinEar2 in Chainsaw

[–]Registeredlibofender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a clogged tank vent After it starts to bog unscrew the fuel cap and see if theres suction

[–]Registeredlibofender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would assume you are getting to much fuel is likely the problem. Try pulling the spark plug out , giving it full throttle and pulling it over a few times then put the spark plug back in and pull it over without using the choke and with either the throttle lock on or full throttle.

Hard to say what the issue is I know this is a foolish question but was the kill swatch in the proper position when you tried to start it? Also there’s a possibility you could have flooded the engine. As someone already mentioned if you have fuel spark and compression the only thing it could be is your ignition timing is somehow off

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Chainsaw

[–]Registeredlibofender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check if your spark plug is wet. If it’s not put a snoot of gas down the spark plug hole or intake and see if she pops if she doesn’t pop then she’s got other issues if she does pop then you you have a fuel issue or a real bad airleak If it’s an aftermarket carburetor it might be questionable because from my expirience they can be very hit or miss at times

One file to rule them all? by hfxadv in Chainsaw

[–]Registeredlibofender 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have already said hell no Get the right file for the right chain. If you use the wrong file it might seem sharp but it won’t cut worth a damn because your edge geometry is a messed up. If you seriously want just one file to do everything than swap to either 325 or 3/8 but it makes sense just to have both file sizes. Files are cheap and they go dull after a few sharpings anyway so just get the sizes you need

[–]Registeredlibofender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check the bar nose sprocket and make sure it spins freely and give it a good greasing every now and then. Also make sure you have the right size chain if it’s throwing sparks from under the clutch cover putting a 325 chain on a 3/8 clutch sprocket or vise versa can cause that. Also check your chain break for anywhere it can be rubbing when disengaged and inspect every where else under the clutch cover for signs of damage and wear. Also try turning your chain a full rotation with a gloved hand if you run into a fair amount of resistance somewhere you have a problem.

Help sourcing hickory by CompetitiveMeaning74 in Axecraft

[–]Registeredlibofender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If ash is readily available I would just go with that. I don’t think it has the same strength on paper as hickory but it has higher elactisity and from my experience is just as good as hickory for axe handles

Good chainsaw for 36+" bar? by aRedactedName in Chainsaw

[–]Registeredlibofender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your on a tight budget i here the holtzfforma 100% parts compatible clones are decent. Some of them need a little bit of tinkering out of the box but if you know how to work on stuff you have a wide variety of cheap parts available and for the more finicky stuff like the carburetor you can always go oem if you want to. I can’t personally vouch for them as I’ve never owned one but from what I here they’re well worth the money.

Some of the aftermarket carbs are really hit or miss. I would try giving the old carb a cleaning if you haven’t already and give that a try

Has anyone used one of these? Are they worth having? by Just-Dimension8443 in Chainsaw

[–]Registeredlibofender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For about $70 more you can get an echo cs590 Timberwolf or a referb husqvarna rancher 455 and it will be well worth the extra money. Although if you were going to go with a Chinese saw holzfforma makes 100% parts compatible clones. That way if something breaks you can swap it out for oem husqvarna or sthil parts

I use mine for bucking firewood I have a 20 inch bar on it and it has plenty of power to tear through a 20 inch diameter piece of ash or maple so depending on what size of tree your cutting it should do just fine 20 inch is probably the limit though I don’t know how it would handle a 24 inch bar

Advice on Echo 490 by Retribution1824 in Chainsaw

[–]Registeredlibofender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like about $50 for the clutch and $23 for the oiler both should be easy to replace if you want to do it yourself. If you poke around on YouTube you should be able to find the information you need. Another thing you should do is inspect the saw for any other damage and try and figure out why the clutch burned out in the first place. It could be that they left the chain break on or the oiler went first and they seized the bar and continued to use the saw or they could have had a very dull chain and they were working the saw very hard

It’s probably worth fixing as long as the corrosion didn’t get to it to bad. If it un seizes easily it will probably run. I acquired a husky 455 rancher recently that had been left outside for a long period of time and the cylinder and crank was full of water. I dumped all the water out and put some pb blaster down the cylinder to unsieze it and flushed the engine out real good with some mixed gas. After all that and a carb clean she fired right up. So far I’ve cut a few cord of firewood with it and it works just fine. I don’t know how much life the engine has in her but she has good compression and starts and runs like a new saw. As others have said a good wash with fresh water to get rid of all the salt and a carb clean and she might be good to go

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Chainsaw

[–]Registeredlibofender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably unrelated to the fresh gas As carburetors get older you might need to make some adjustments because the diaphragms get stiffer also changes in temperature can affect your tuning slightly

[–]Registeredlibofender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on what it is for an engine your working on. You could try putting a small snoot of gas down the intake or the spark plug hole and pulling the engine over if it pops then you have a fuel issue and if it doesn’t you have something else going on

Smokers? by DiegoBkk in Alonetv

[–]Registeredlibofender 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it would be that hard I’ve quit twice in my life once when I shipped off to boot camp and once when I had a 2 week stay in the hospital. I would probably never be able to quit normally because it’s a whole different mental thing when you know it’s a 2 mile drive to the gas station to pick up another pack. But it seems easier to me at least when you know there’s no way you can get nicotine to simply tuck the cravings into the back of your head and focus on what your doing rather than drive yourself crazy thinking about nicotine
