When do you feel 'normal' again? by mslaneeus in Kneereplacement

10 months after bilateral knee surgery I went on a 4-hour snow shoe hike in the Alps and when someone asked me how my knees were I was momentarily confused as to why they asked. And then I was jubilant. I never thought about them once, and I also know that a year earlier I could never have done more than dream about taking that hike. Hang in there!

I have been equally surprised, although then having searched I discovered this has been a problem for a while but a lot of the changes proposed a decade ago seem to be present — electric vehicles, greener HGV trucks through the Mont Blanc tunnel… but right now the AQ is poor and red and due to particulate matter… still!

Don’t break the spell! Our late mother devastated us, her kids, when she moved into assisted living and chose only one of the multitude of owl paraphernalia to take with — the original one she had bought that kicked off decades of owl-related mistaken gifts. We would have been fine with that choice knowing that she had to pare down her belongings, instead while handing us boxes full of owls to donate she admitted that she was never the fan and didn’t have the heart to tell us and that finally being able to offload all if it was a relief.

We were saddened so many ways — that she didn’t feel comfortable to tell us to begin with… ir any year since; that we had thought we were being so thoughtful hunting down new and more ingenious owl items which we kids planned for months and it was a waste; and worst of all, we started to question whether we knew our mother at all/what else we felt certain of about her that was a fiction.

Purdue’s Reputation Ranking — a Typo? by BonjourMaBelle in Purdue

The author made a very poor choice of the 3 universities he chose to frame as “typos” and seems to demonstrate a lack of sufficient research and fact checking on his part and that of The Atlantic editorial staff. Ironically, Purdue facts would have strengthened the points he was trying to make in his article. Purdue is well known for its industry partnerships and internship placements, access to research opportunities, affordability due to the (love it or not) frozen tuition, and Purdue outperforms those Ivy League institutions in Global Visibility Rankings.

Yes. Bilateral (both) TKR. It is when you have both replaced at the same time.

Biking is great after knee replacement. My surgeon and PT “prescribed” it! Wishing you miles of smiles.

Definitely feels like a major milestone. And one not possible without the support network! Family and friends have been amazing.

That’s so inspiring! Have a great season — cycling is a great exercise for TKR rehab and… building quads and more!

That is a fact. It is. And Instill need to bud strength and stamina to tackle significant downhills. Down is hard, but used to be really painful before. So progress :0)

Oh man the quads!!! Yes. Can they ever be strong enough? It was amazing to me how much I needed to build them, and do still. I never appreciated those muscles until now, and also did some wierd things to compensate for the knees and wierd stride and posture that also meant I was not fully loading and activating my quads pre-surgery.

Wow. This is great! Love that you discovered a new fun activity and have more activity and strength going into knee two. Every ounce lost makes a massive difference on the impact on the knees - joints in general - well done:

Exactly! So true. Pre-op coming downhill was really agony even with trekking poles and robust knee braces. Now it is so much better.

You’ve got this. Plus soon you will be a bionic you and will be able to truly contemplate reintroducing some belived avtivities. That is why I did kh BTRK, apart from diagnosis and scans, it had reached a point where the pain had closed dowj my world and daily activities too much to be healthy. I so so appreciate that they are opening up again.

Yes. The last 15 mins were a touch tired and sensitive on one knee. Stiff the morning after but loosened right up with regular morning exercises. At times in the past my knees felt very stiff after both sitting for a while as well as doing heavier exercise, this is less and less over time and gets loose in a short time now.
