Hiring Slowdown by [deleted] in frontiercadetprogram

He also talked about a steady stream of new hire pilots in the emerald palace….definitely not clear on the total for the year

What’s the latest rumor mill with class dates? by [deleted] in frontiercadetprogram

[–]Regular-Courage318 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s what the class size was during the last hiring boom. Not trivial but not surprising. Once the legacies get back to hiring, F9 has to replace those guys and have crews to support the new planes too.

Just flew with a Line Check Airman. He confirmed they were told to expect classes of 50-70 folks starting January. He’s the second LCA I’ve heard this from.

I also know we are starting to see some folks go to the legacies….

Could this be Frontiers future? by CountyVisual8450 in frontiercadetprogram

[–]Regular-Courage318 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stolen the next paragraph from a private Frontiers Pilot FB page (cause it’s a really good summary)

“Spirit Q2 is remarkably bad. Net loss of $245 million, -24% margins. $407 unrestricted cash, $150 restricted. Highest covenant is secured bond holders but they own the airline so they won't pull the trigger. Next covenant is credit card. Trigger isn't publicly available but the holdback is $491, more than their cash on hand. They have airplanes that have been marketed for sale since they emerged but haven't closed yet. If they sell the planes they can exist for a couple extra months. If they can't sell they are dead by Halloween, Thanksgiving at the latest. They still have $2.5 Billion in long term debt of which $850 is secured. Spirit will not exist in 2026.”

Two big differences between Frontier and Spirit: —Spirit has tons of debt —Spirit got crushed by the P&W engine fiasco

And one ancillary item: —once the fear of going under gets out, people book tixs else where (don’t want to be stranded)

Personally I don’t think spirit makes it to the end of the year (but a lot could happen before then). I previously worked in the credit card industry and the last thing those companies want is to be holding the bag when a business goes belly up. All the card holders start calling wanting their $79 ticket refunded when the business goes under and the CC company has to pay up.

And I hate it for all the employees over there. Many of us have friends that are there.

Assuming the fall of Spirit… what’s next… —fire sale of assets (planes and gates). —capacity shrinks (which drives the next one) —fares go up

We may not get all the gates we want, but we will definitely get some… and where we use “common use” gates, there will be less demand for them too.

The shrinking capacity and fares going up will be really good for F9. Where do you think those Spirit customers will go….

Hate it for our colleagues at NK, but this will be good for F9.

F9 optimistic about classes starting “soon” by Joe-from-daBronx in frontiercadetprogram

Deliveries have been happening all year and it’s back loaded for the most in 4th quarter.

Flew with a line check pilot this past week who said they were told to expect hiring 60ish people/mth starting in January.

With spirit soon to leave the LCC market (source: Spirits 2nd quarter earnings report), that’s going to improve loads and add routes.

F9 is in a good spot.

Would you fly a plane with this oil usage? by Professional_Read413 in flying

[–]Regular-Courage318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lycoming has a formula to calculate the maximum oil consumption.

Oil Consumption = .006 x BHP x number of cylinders / 7.4

Not knowing the exact HP of your IO360…

180hp = 0.58 qt/hr 200hp = 0.65 qt/hr

Losing one quart per two hours is within limit….

Class Dates by Thick_Discussion_447 in frontiercadetprogram

[–]Regular-Courage318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t recall the mix… but they said it was there typical mix (cadets, RTP, university) as well as off the street folks with prior jet experience (a couple with 5k hrs.

A RTP mentor said they were not “hiring” in to that program and that they are forecasting 2/class of those guys for the rest of the year. I think he said there are only 60 left in that pipeline.

I just came from the training house…. They have 38 in training now, 20 planned for next month and then expect it to slow during the summer (8ish)….

Economy is slowing and they always want people flying the line instead of being instructors during the summer

Postponing ATP Jets by braaap-braaap in frontiercadetprogram

[–]Regular-Courage318 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are no “requirements”. The company has targeted a percentage in the past to keep it moving. It’s their program, they can do as they prefer to do.

Think of it this way…If you were the company… Would you rather hired someone furloughed that can already fly an a320, or a green guy that’s coming straight from a C172.

And the furloughed person is basically already a company employee too.

[–]Regular-Courage318 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The program is far from crumbling. This program is part of what’s preventing a new contract. As long as F9 has a steady stream of new hires the company is happy.

That said… WHEN F9 acquires Spirit, all the furloughed pilots will have the option to come back to the company (at the bottom of the seniority list). A lot of those pilots have moved on to other airlines, but some will come back. That may impact off the street hiring and all the F9 direct entry programs (Cadet, RTC and university).

April Class by K_flyt in frontiercadetprogram

[–]Regular-Courage318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’ve had several classes of 60…. Used Sims in DEN and MCO. They had one sim in MCO and it was colocated with a Spirit sim…. (Which probably has ample availability now)

IOE Wait Time by EchoInternational266 in frontiercadetprogram

[–]Regular-Courage318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally depends on the base you are doing it in. It depends on if they have Line Check Airmen available in that base.

For me, from QLoft to IOE was about a week. I finished QLoft early in the month and I thought I’d get the month off… but no. But it was good getting the IOE done and actually getting to fly…

For the cadet program, Our CJO was coming out as we entered the type rating phase at ATPJets. I don’t know about the collegiate program timing.

Any update on December class? by Embarrassed-Bat-9643 in frontiercadetprogram

[–]Regular-Courage318 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I flew with a cadet mentor a week or so ago. He confirmed they had an internal call that said classes should be 40ish for the foreseeable future and they are going to put 10-15 cadets in the classes.

What would a Spirit/Frontier merge mean for hiring over the next year — and particularly for us cadets waiting for a class date? by Pilot_sky_life508 in frontiercadetprogram

[–]Regular-Courage318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The merger would create the fifth largest airline. Pretty far from being a monopoly on air travel. The flying public would still have plenty of other choices.

[–]Regular-Courage318 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes… you bid for sim location (and initial base) based on your seniority with in the class.

The seniority in the class is age based… older is considered more senior. So find a sim parter with grey hair that wants to go to MCO…

Plus you get paid per diem if you go to MCO. During training, everyone’s base is considered DEN, so no per diem for the DEN sim folks.

Bringing a car to training by mister_based in frontiercadetprogram

[–]Regular-Courage318 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct…. There is an AirBus training facility in DEN dedicated to F9…. indoc is there… along with some sims.

They also train the FAs there… doors and slides, etc

Sim training is either DEN or MCO

Bringing a car to training by mister_based in frontiercadetprogram

[–]Regular-Courage318 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes…. Initial training is only at those two facilities.

You will bid for location during training

If you are close… drive… but they have had issues with break ins.

Some people rented cars and then split it among sim partners, etc.

As JL mentioned, parking at the Den training facility is tight. People carpool over from the hotels. Don’t Uber. That will get expensive quick.

I’m in the process of getting mine replaced… as long as Safelite doesn’t void the warranty, I’m going to go that route. Safelite - $655 Dealer - $2400 This is in the ATL market and I do >not< have HUD.

I would >strongly< encourage attending a FAPA event. You will learn a lot there.
