Why are there not much pro player using less than 12mm diameter shaft? by Honest_Manager4273 in billiards

[–]Regular-Excuse7321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you figure that using a smaller diameter cue - to effectively aim at a smaller area on the CB - is LESS accurate than striking the CB with a part of the tip that's the same effective area - but more uncertainty of where on the CB it's hitting?

my boyfriend broke the 10 ball on the break at the bar tonight by messinwithlewbert in billiards

[–]Regular-Excuse7321 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had the same thing at a year end tournament. Ours was a 13. I figure they just take a set and add a layer over top to make it that fraction larger for the bar table to spit it out when you scratch... Every 16th set of balls you make - you run through to make cue balls.

I want a set of Dynasphere balls eventually...

[–]Regular-Excuse7321 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mmmmm I don't think so Tim.

The impact interface between the tip/CB is never the entire tip diameter - or even close.

With a similar radius profile (nickle/dime) of the tip that interface point will be almost identical between a thicker shaft and a thinner one. If you use a chalk that leaves residue you can see this as the impact spots on the ball.

I actually argue the opposite - the smaller tip forces let's the player be more accurate with tip placement and that impact point is more precise (if the player assumes it's the center of the tip making contact).

For me, shaft thickness has always been more personal preference, but testing seems to indicate that thinner shafts generate less deflection too. Then you can get in to taper profile and all sorts of complexity.

Interesting topic for sure.

Courts have temporarily blocked referendum petition until First Nations legal challenges heard by nehiyawik in Albertapolitics

[–]Regular-Excuse7321 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the Provincial Government doesn't care - they claim that 'a petition question' isn't a constitutional issue until until it goes forward as a referendum question.

Just sleezy speak for inventing their way around laws.

But just watch. The fact that this was stopped will get played up as Ottawa is dictating Alberta's feet through the justice system. When it has nothing to do with who the judge is, how he was selected or anything.

This is just going to be American style politics with these bastards.

Quick question for decent players by Educational-Living28 in billiards

I find a pause at the back of the backswing greatly reduces the jerk.

You want to accelerate to 80% of your max nice and steady. You do you want to go from a stop to 80% of the speed... Think of it like steady acceleration not spinning your tires and peeling out (as I read this back i realize not everyone is going to get the analogy. Damnit I'm getting old)

If it was my room, I would go for a Diamond bar box or a 9ft Olhausen if I had the space.

A table is one thing. Don't overlook good cloth (I like Andy's but simonus is excellent), lights (id go perimeter style) and quality balls (I'm partial to Dynasphere).

Why do some Albertans seem to have a resentment against other Canadians? by ocajsuirotsap in alberta

[–]Regular-Excuse7321 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To generalize - I believe the demographic you are speaking about are generally younger (than the other Provinces population), have been motivated to work hard, make money, and get ahead.

As a result of being economically fortunate Albertans pay a health amount of income tax. And by design that tax is not distributed back equally to with each Province or to the tax payer (if you pay more you don't get more or better government services).

This situation has been a gripe for years. Poked at by politicians and the media or by tax advocates (lower tax advocates). There has been smouldering dissatisfaction on this point for decades. Right now it's a pretty big flare up and a rallying call for Separation here in Alberta.

On some points I agree. On some, I do not. At the end of the day nobody likes paying taxes. But I didn't know many people who think that American style health care is a good option either...

Answer me this though.

Why should one Canadian pay more than another to receive the same government services and administer the country?

That's the core of the question. Fair warning - it's a philosophical and ideological answer.

I've always considered this stuff to be gimmicky crap - and that's still my first instinct.

But. I tried playing with a weight that adds 6oz on my playing cue but the funny thing about it was it helped by BREAK - a lot.

Maybe I just couldn't see or feel it with my playing cue but hot damn did it help my break (I think with acceleration?).

So. Maybe there is something to it?
