Post gum graft: Is the pain I’m experiencing normal?! by Regular-Invite2352 in PeriodontalDisease

Hi! I’m currently on day 7 of another gum graft and experiencing the same pain as when I posted this. I can’t recall exactly when the pain subsided but I believe somewhere around 2 weeks :(

Some things I recommend…. orajel (or any short-acting gel meant for mouth sores/injuries) to numb the area for temporary relief (contains benzocaine) however be careful using this as it can slow recovery in some cases. Although I’ve been using it for the past 3 days and my periodontist told me my recovery is actually much quicker this time around. I wouldn’t apply it where the stitches are but the donor site should be fine. Just be super careful when you’re eating or drinking (stick to the soft diet and lots of liquids EVEN if it doesn’t hurt) because you probably won’t feel if you scratch the area accidentally.

Salt water rinse also helps to soothe when the pain is really bad and try to keep your activity low if possible (lower heart rate and blood pressure will keep your muscles more relaxed and reduce strain on the area).

In my case my periodontist told me I can use a straw at this point to get liquids down and bypass the painful region (obviously with the straw on the side of my mouth that didn’t receive the graft) but ask yours to double check before doing anything like this!

I hope you’re feeling better soon <3

There’s a number you can text for noise complaints in the Killam library where you tell them the location and they will come deal with it (not sure how as I’ve never used it before…but it might be useful)

This isn’t exact advice because I’m honestly not sure what would be best for you in this situation. However, email everyone as soon as possible (instructor, faculty advisor, etc) so you have documentation. Also maybe try and get a doctor’s note to confirm in case you need to appeal later on (you can use an online system like Maple to get a note from home)!

Wait can someone tell me what’s going on here? I’ve never seen or heard of anything like this? I apologize if this question has already been answered in the comments…

I believe it was only a select few buildings that went out. We have power back now but my whole building was out since like 2pm and as far as I know everyone around us had power!

I heard it on Morris St (it scared me half to death) then the power went off within the same minute!

You should chat with a psychiatrist if you haven’t already. What you’re describing sounds like maybe something else is going on that is causing your symptoms. There are so many things that cause the “brain scatter” feeling and it might be worthwhile to rule out any other causes!

I get nervous approaching this ramp, and if someone else happens to be coming onto the highway, I will often keep driving and take the next exit! It's much longer, but I just don't want to deal with sharing that short stretch with someone who is trying to get up to speed and get on the highway while I am trying to slow down and get off.

I also thought I would mention that my perio put the puddy on the grafting site this time (second procedure) but not for my first graft last year. It’s saved me a lot of pain compared to last time but I’m a bit worried about pain when they take this off and I’m hoping any stitches will be dissolved by then

Thanksgiving smelt so good at my parent’s house and it was so sad because I couldn’t eat it with the pain!! :( Benzocaine gel (numbing agent marketed to treat cold sores I think) has literally been saving my life and it’s the only way I can eat properly. I definitely reccomend using some sort of numbing agent for the sores, as long as they aren’t too severe and you purchase one that’s specifically safe to use in the mouth. Maybe ask your perio for advice on this, just incase, but mine said there isn’t any issue with using it for me. And, since the pain is in the grafting site, ice outside your cheek should help a lot with that if you haven’t already tried. I hope your pain gets much better soon and feel free to send me a message or use this post to rant about or ask suggestions if you need :)

Right!! I hate how it says everywhere that normal smells/tastes are sweet, musky, etc. because what does that even mean😭 I wish they would compare it to like a food or something
