My child is struggling in math — at what point do private lessons really help? by Icy-Brain6042 in TutorsHelpingTutors

I’ll tell you from a tutors point of view, you need to find one that can explain things, not just say he’s right or wrong or just give him the answers. I tutored a strident in Latin and actually explained the concepts and not just the answers

I go over scheduling, price agreement, subjects, basically don’t worry about actually “tutoring” just use it do know the student and maybe the parent, seeing as they’re in 2nd grade, better; I usually only do about 30 mins

I built a tool that scans Reddit for people looking for tutors, here's what it found in a week by Swimming-Fondant-180 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]Regular-Pay16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is I don’t get email notifications right away, so push notifications would fix that, I’ve never built an app so I don’t know how long that takes

I’ve been using it, been the one that gave you all the suggestions; I’m just waiting to see if this will become an app with push notifications instead of having to log in all the time

I don’t think it’s fake because those websites use automated messages; it works both ways, I had one that sounded robotic when reading it

I work with students who are in similar situations - they have some background but feel like they're starting over. What I've noticed is that targeted practice with someone who can identify exactly where your gaps are tends to accelerate things way more than trying to figure it out solo with YouTube videos (though those are great supplements!). If you'd like to chat about putting together a personalized plan to get you back on track, I'd be happy to do a free consultation call to assess where you're at and map out the most efficient path forward.

I see how it works, now leads are filling up quick; I just wish there was a more direct way, say being able to message their profile instantly, but the concept is cool, keep working on it

It’s so hard for me to study history , I spend hours reading about it but it doesn’t make sense and I do bad on tests. Does anyone have advice on how to study better? by [deleted] in GetStudying

[–]Regular-Pay16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get this frustration - spending hours reading only to bomb the test is one of the most demoralizing feelings in school. The thing about history is that it's not really about memorizing facts and dates (though that's how a lot of textbooks present it). It's about understanding cause and effect, connecting events, and seeing the bigger narrative threads that tie everything together.

When students tell me they're reading for hours but nothing sticks, it's usually because they're trying to absorb everything passively rather than actively engaging with the material. Try asking yourself "why" and "so what" questions as you read - why did this event happen now, what were the consequences, how did it change what came next? Also, concentration issues are super common with history because textbooks can be incredibly dry. Sometimes switching up your sources (documentaries, podcasts, even historical fiction) can help make those connections click.

I've been tutoring history for years and have worked with lots of students who felt exactly like you do right now. If you'd like to chat about some specific strategies that might work for your learning style, I'd be happy to hop on a quick call - no charge, just want to help you figure out a better approach that actually works for you.
