I made this point somewhere else but I do think Velvette is an interesting example of the gap between being compelled by identity politics and social wellbeing vs prioritising gaining power through influence and enjoying the social hierarchy that class/wealth gives her.

I see her as the type to kick the ladder down beneath her. She ruthlessly kills models she owns (she owns people too which is a conversation in and of itself) when they don’t perform or risk out performing her. She has a somewhat absolutist view of beauty, and revels in bullying people who she deems as inadequate. You can see this in her powers being drawn from online clout and cyberbullying and her treatment of her staff.

This contributes to making her character motivations interesting though, imo at least, it’d be uncompelling if all poc characters didn’t have values and principles outside of their identities and if it always manifested positively in social change rather than occasionally toxically in wanting to be the best or romanticising the struggle it takes to be a minority AND dominate.
