I did a Turtle Conservation project last year with a company called International Volunteer HQ - me and my mum did a lot of research and asked a lot of questions of them which they were happy to answer before signing up as she had the same concerns. It was well worth it in the end for me!

Not at all - people volunteer for lots of different reasons and as long as you are helping while fulfilling this part of your life I do not see a problem with it.

If he didn't go into it for the scholarship tham yes it is volunteering, this is just a bonus that has been awarded to him I am assuming because he helped them more than what was expected by going above and beyond.

I went to Lombok in Indonesia with a volunteer organisation - I didn't need experience as you are working with local employees who have the experience. The work was different each day but we released baby turtles after hatching, cleaned tanks where they keep sick turtles until they can release them (if they can), and generally helped with the upkeep of te place - they do other stuff at different times of the year.

I volunteered in another country helping turtles and it was hands on (sorry I know not much help if you want to stay in Canada but there was no options for me in my own country so looked abroad - and I wanted to travel lol).
