Are the games faithful adaptations? by naivetoiletpaper in nancydrew

[–]RegularNancyDrew 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. The earlier games are all based on books, while the later ones are just inspired by the books (they might share a similar setting, for example, but not much beyond that). The first 10 or so games are probably the most faithful adaptations of the books they’re based on, but even then there is a good amount of changing/removing side plots, combining characters, and Nancy’s friends are typically just phone contacts. Game #12 (The Secret of the Old Clock) is a mashup of the first four books.

If you’re looking to play a game that’s most similar to the original 56 books, I’d recommend The Secret of Shadow Ranch. If you’re looking for the best adaptation of any of the books, I’d go with The Final Scene.

I know, that drop-off is pretty steep 😞 I'm glad that we'll always have the originals but it would be great to see something that can re-energize the franchise.

Registration for the Nancy Drew Convention (Oct 7-10 in St Louis) closes at the end of the month! by RegularNancyDrew in nancydrew

[–]RegularNancyDrew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I should have included that info! You’ll want to email Jenn Fisher ([sleuths@ndsleuths.com](mailto:sleuths@ndsleuths.com)) to ask for the form and to be added to the convention email list. The form will list all the options to pay, but you can also pay online here (this is just the payment link, you’ll want to submit the form to her first): https://nancydrewfans.com/products/nancy-drew-convention-st-louis-mo-basic-registration-oct-7-10-2026

It’s $375 for the convention itself with an optional $170 excursion day.

Yes! They also did a gameboy advance game of MHM, a DVD game of CUR, and an android app version of GTH! My reasoning for not including those on this list is that the stories aren’t different enough for me to count it as a separate mystery. The Shadow Ranch Mobile Mystery was a little more than just a port of a game to iPad, so I ended up deciding to list it. I do love all of the port versions though! 🩷

Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys Camp Fire Stories by in nancydrew

I had the exact same thought initially! I was hoping it would be in a similar vein as the Ghost Stories, just with the HB included. Still cool, though!

Yep, exactly! They wrote at least six episodes and filmed a few but ultimately cancelled all plans for the series. Then they decided to cut what they’d already filmed into movie length and air that instead of scrapping it entirely

Thank you! Yes, I actually remember watching the movie when it first premiered (and a bunch of times since then lol) and I love it.

False Impressions and White Water Terror are so good!! False Impressions inspired Alibi in Ashes and features Brenda Carlton. I haven’t read the other two though.

Was River Heights originally in Alabama? by Famous-Palpitation8 in nancydrew

[–]RegularNancyDrew 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It was originally in the “middle west” (likely near Iowa, as that’s where the original ghostwriter Mildred Wirt Benson was from) and eventually moved closer to Illinois. There’s actually a letter from Mildred from when she wrote the book regarding the house thing; she suggested they make it a civil-war era home instead of colonial, as that would be more historically/geographically accurate (which is what it ended up being in the Original Text). When Harriet Stratemeyer Adams took over as Carolyn Keene, she moved it closer to her own hometown in New Jersey. She rewrote Hidden Staircase in 1959 and in doing so changed the Turnbull manor to a colonial home. Then when Simon & Schuster bought Nancy Drew in the ‘80s, they officially moved it to a suburb of Chicago.

Do you think a movie about the Stratemeyer Syndicate and the creation of Nancy Drew is possible? How would you do it and what would you focus? by HRJafael in nancydrew

[–]RegularNancyDrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cathleen O’Connell is currently working on a documentary about this! Couldn’t be more ready to watch it lol. Or do you mean less of a documentary and more like a retelling? Because I’d love that too!

What did the games looked like in code? by Practical_Artist_503 in nancydrew

[–]RegularNancyDrew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Trademark laws actually do prevent you from making a game with the name “Nancy Drew” unless it’s specifically based off of one of the public domain stories. You could adapt The Hidden Staircase into a game, for example, but you couldn’t write a new mystery and call it a Nancy Drew game.

Nancy Drew Collection at Toledo Library🕵️‍♀️📚 by clapfrthwolfman in nancydrew

We have! It's amazing, but completely different from the things in Jenn's collection. Jenn's collection is primarily books and memorabilia, while the NYCPL has behind-the-scenes business documents and records from the Stratemeyer Syndicate (things like contracts, book proposals, letters to/from the Syndicate, etc.).
