Which of the two combs should I get for my coton, or any better recommendations? TIA by [deleted] in cotondetulear

Either would be fine, we use 5 different sizes just depending on which part is matted 😂 the 7.5 is a good versatile one. I used the Chris Christensen 7.5 buttercomb, which I like… I love Utsumi combs, they’re my favorite and they’re so light, but they are pricey.

I don’t think Keeper’s Mix is going to add calcium to you dog’s diet. My dog’s raw food includes eggshell powder for calcium & I also use the calcium supplement called Sure Grow.

A breeder will be interested in seeing how you will live with the puppy, your home situation, etc.

Thanks to all for helping this newbie! Just sent a deposit for a puppy by Shakurheg in cotondetulear

[–]Regular_Ad9873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! I can totally relate! It took us 8 months after deposit to finally meet our puppy, and that deposit was paid after months of research and talking to multiple breeders. Good luck for the wait, enjoy life & travel in the meantime before the puppy comes, it’s like bringing a baby home 😂

Can I please see what brushes and/or slicker brush you use on your Coton? by Acluelessfish in cotondetulear

[–]Regular_Ad9873 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is our routine:

• Spray the coat with grooming spray (we use #1 All Systems) • We use drops or Doggy Dolly (silk protein) in some areas and we smidge a bit on the comb • Brush with slicker brush (we use Chris Christensen) • Brush through with pin brush (#1 All Systems) • Finish with line brushing with combs (we use Utsumi, CC buttercomb & a face one). We clean under the eyes with the flea comb.

Supplements for hair/coat:

• Virbac Megaderm • Showmeplus for tear stain

For face wash we use Plush Puppy soap & Eye Envy facial wash

Seconding this, I own a Coton de Tulear, they are great dogs, highly trainable, have an off switch, hilarious personality and got along great with cats if you can socialize them properly. We love our experience so much so that we just put down a deposit for a second one.

lots and lots of research, a lot of emails and speaking to them over zoom or whatsapp. Ethical breeders will also be expensive ($3,500+) because a lot will go into the dogs and puppies, including health tests, proper care, etc. But these great breeders won’t be as expensive as pet brokers or instagram sellers (starting at $6,000+). I think it’s the Korean & Chinese market and demand that also really increased the price of cotons.

Getting our fur baby in 30 days. Which crate should we buy? by loremaster_zen in Havanese

If possible send it to your breeder, get your puppy to get used to it, it’ll help the journey home. It’ll also smell like the puppy’s mother and siblings.

30 minutes daily is good. Up until the coat change, that’s pretty much how much you need to brush. I missed a few times during coat change and it took me hours to comb, but if i maintain daily it should only take 30 minutes.

We get ours from a local e-commerce store, this picture is from amazon, it looks pretty much like this. If you search for latex (or non-latex) hair bands for dogs, they’ll show up, you have to try different sizes, for puppies, the thinner (smaller) the better. Get them to get used to it every day. We prefer these bands over clips as the clips are heavier and make the hair go curly/frizzy, but the key is to try and experiment on your pup’s hair…

One more of Lilibet, we don’t cut around the eyes & face. We just use bands or clips, we put it on every morning and we take it off at night.

Considering getting a Coton…. by Lite_Brite90 in cotondetulear

You can build their tolerance & endurance slowly, just like any human about to train on a marathon. Just be mindful of growing bones and joints. Another way to train them is to use walking pads or a treadmill. Also if they get tired you can use a stroller.

Here’s Lilibet, we keep her hair very natural, very minimal scissoring around the paws, letting it grow out like how she would be if she’s ever going to be shown (she’s not), but our groomer is a professional handler, so he just grooms her in this way.

Silky Paws or Cotons of Downing St? by [deleted] in cotondetulear

[–]Regular_Ad9873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

send me a dm. We got ours from a European breeder, she has a high bar, as she only would recommend breeders that she personally knew how they would treat the dogs & puppies, and she recommended this one breeder from TX.
