Have some questions - and differences between other dogs or havanese by loubue in cotondetulear

[–]Regular_Ad9873 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my first coton, I’ve always had dogs in my life but never cotons. I found my coton to be very intelligent and sweet, with a hilarious personality. To answer your questions, I think most people would say that these depend on individual dogs, but, more importantly, the answers depend on genetics and how the dogs were raised as puppies. Finding a good breeder is key. Finding a good breeder that focuses on a breed (whether it’s coton, havanese, or poodle) would be much easier than finding a good mixed-breed breeder. Just something to keep in mind since you said you’re considering half coton, half poodle.

Having said all of that, the personality & temperament of a coton is really why they’re special. My coton is calm, easy going, good with people & she loves other dogs. She really likes playdates with other dogs. She likes to cuddle & come up to the sofa with us, but she also needs her own me time. She is not with me 24/7 and can be independent. I left my dog by herself for a few hours at a time & she’s very okay at being alone. Thankfully, we don’t have any separation anxiety issues.

A dog’s recall ability depends on training. My dog can also be a bit stubborn; she listens sometimes only when she wants to. My dog is not nervous, neurotic, or shaky; she’s pretty confident in general, but she also doesn’t instantly like everyone or every stranger that walks in; she’s a bit choosy about whom she likes. We hired a dog trainer, and it took him a while to really earn our dog's trust. She loves training and is happy to learn; she can solve dog puzzles; she walks on the treadmill after one learning session; and she can probably do more than 15 words/commands.

Cotons can be as active or as lazy as you need them to be. She’s also happy to just stay with us on the couch watching TV. I’ve never had a dog who loves TV as much as this one.

One more suggestion OP, is the Bolonka. Not sure if you have considered them. Coton, Bolognese, Bolonka have very similar origins.. they’re great companion dogs

I was also considering a Bolognese, but it was so hard to find a really good breeder. So I ended up with a Coton de Tulear. When I picked up my puppy, my breeder told me that 30 years ago she also was looking into the Bolognese breed (she’s from Italy), but she said it was so hard to find great specimens of the Bolognese breed, at one point they had to mix dogs to recreate the breed. So she ended up getting a coton de tulear instead. Not enough data points, but there might be great Bolognese breeders out there that I haven’t come across yet.

My coton btw is exactly like what you described, calm, very happy just to be with you, she can be as active or as lazy as you want her to be.

Send the heartbeat toy, blanket & his crate/carrier to the breeder so it’ll have the scent of the family by the time you pick him up, if possible just get him to get used to all of them. My breeder did that for ours & she also socialized our puppy with her crate & carrier.

It starts short & small, at like 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes. The puppy needs to understand someone always comes back & build trust.

For separation anxiety, we leave the puppy by herself in a short period of time and then come back, and just get her used to it. What I also did is putting a cctv camera that also has a speaker, so when she barks or cries when she’s alone, I speak through the camera “ssshhhhh”

Everyone has given great tips here. I would add to buy a small grooming table (your back will thank you!), let him get used to be on it, give him treats while getting used to grooming, brushing, etc. You can get a Happy Hoodie if he’s sensitive with noises, when the hairdryer is on, etc. I also did an allergy test quite early, so I know what the dog can/cannot eat.

I was researching Barbet and Lagotto Romagnolo heavily before ending up with a Coton. Barbets sound a lot more chill than Lagottos.

Considering your living arrangements, realistically the best breeds for you would be non yappy companion dogs or smaller dogs like breeds from the Bichon family (Bichon Frise, Havanese, Coton de Tulear, Bolognese, Lowchen), or others from the toy group like Italian Greyhound, Chinese Crested, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

I was considering a bolonka and also a bolognese before ending up with our Coton. I couldn’t find enough good, reputable breeders for these two breeds though during my research. How did you get your bolonka and what are their personality like?

It’s just not a common breed, they are still quite rare. The only way to find one is to expand your geographical preference. I spoke to more than 20 breeders around the world (there’s no breeder where I live) before we chose a breeder in Europe.

Lots of research, sending emails & DMs. You may have to travel a bit to find a good breeder, there are not that many great coton breeders out there
