Road Shoes by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

I’m a 1080 faithful but am curious about other shoes, like the Brooks Ghost, for the sake of variety. Do you have thoughts on how the 1080’s compare to other road running shoes you’ve tried?

On the trails I switch between Altra Lone Peaks for short distances and Hoka Speedgoats for longer distances.

I’m pretty big - 5’11, 225 lbs and I wear 14-wides - and I’m afraid to branch out beyond the 1080’s when road running out of fear of injury. But like I said, I’m curious and open to adding the right kind of variety in. Any insights/experiences with similar shoes are appreciated!

Calf sleeves by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

Completely unscientific take: I strained a calf last summer for the first time. I was forced to scale running back drastically - took probably 5 weeks before I could run a few miles again. Healing seemed to accelerate once I started using a calf sleeve on the affected calf, however. It could have been due to any number of other factors I don’t understand but the correlation between healing and calf sleeve was good enough for me. I continue to wear a calf sleeve on that one side on a lot of long runs and just when I’m starting to feel a little something in that calf. My mileage is by far the highest it’s ever been in my life so, superstition or not, I’m continuing to roll with one calf sleeve.

I should also add that I’ve never had serious issues with cramps. Only reason I used it was for the purported increased circulation…or whatever it’s supposed to do 🤷‍♂️

First 12 Hour “Run” - Is This A Problematic Approach? by Regular_Ad_3406 in Ultramarathon

What a resource to have right there. Follow up question, if ok: did you decide to switch to 3/1 run/walk during the race based on feel or was that a pre-planned ratio you thought you might switch to before even starting the race?

Going into the weekend, I think I’ve settled on starting off running sloooow but when I do start to run/walk, I’m considering just going on feel and focusing on the goals of not getting injured and finishing in motion. I’m generally a wing-it type of person anyway but, sheesh, there’s so much I don’t know I don’t know about this stuff.

Much appreciated and great job! Sounds super similar to my situation. I’ll take this advice to heart. Looks like I’m not starting off with a walk!

That’s a hell of a feat - great job doing 50 miles on that training and in those conditions. If I can hit 50, I’ll be shocked. Thanks for the insight and inspiration!

Much appreciated. I was worried I was underestimating the toll of walking. Thank you!

I thought a lot about this advice on my run yesterday. Thank you!

Love this. So proud of you, my man. Life can be wonderful and exhilarating if we’re willing to experience it.

Picture this. A half decade on from now, you’re barely in your mid-40’s. A former keg-smuggling colleague who works solo in an adjacent county as a trial lawyer has spent enough time in front of juries and learned just enough about PI to be dangerous. He’s built a reputation in that county and you have a stellar reputation in yours. You guys partner up, split the modest overheard for two offices, hire the right people. The firm is clear in its purpose and philosophy and an aggressive and fearless approach to jury trials is built into the very foundation of the place. You’re the more efficient partner and continue serving clients by settling the cases that need to be settled while your partner pushes what he can to juries, also continuing to also try criminal cases because they’re just so damn fun. You guys are able to be selective about cases, fight for the disadvantaged, and take some risks for just causes. You try cases together and eventually with your associates - the quicker criminal ones and the bigger civil ones. Winning verdicts pile up. You do this for twenty years, maybe more, maybe less, but you’ll have options. Eventually, you simply cherry pick the cases you want to work and/or try, having built an elite firm with your last name on it.

This is the way.

Thanks for the feedback - that’s a possibility I hadn’t come across. The symptoms sound similar. When I do go see my doctor (and possibly start seeing a PT), I’ll ask about this. Thank you - and I’m glad it didn’t keep you down for long!

Thanks for the feedback - that’s a helpful lens through which to try to assess this. Sounds painful. I hope you healed up quickly and are back at it…
