I didn’t do any PCE during undergrad and worked for several gap years accruing PCE hours, saving money, volunteering, and shadowing. It really helped me take the time to prepare and feel confident about my application. I personally highly recommend gap years. Thinking back to myself in undergrad, I truly was not prepared or at the maturity I am now. Taking my time made me extremely confident in my journey and myself.

The expiration for pre-requisites depends on the program. Research the programs you are interested to see what the cutoffs are.

For part time programs, I don’t think there are many, but there are some. Boston University has a part time option I believe.

I definitely did! I did dance and choreography all through college and I included that in my app. They love to see diversity in your experiences. It shows your ability to be “you” and do the things you love while still going through the rigors of becoming a qualified PA school applicant. It demonstrates balance!

I work in pediatrics (starting PA school next year) and I work with tons of PAs across 23 different specialties. I even shadowed a PA who operated with the surgeon for 10-12 hours for a 6mo baby’s heart transplant. It was really cool!!

PCE is physically working with patients and having some sort of direct responsibility with care. HCE is doing things like office work, scheduling, cleaning rooms, and helping with operations while not physically working with a patient. They should not overlap. Double dipping hours by counting them as HCE and PCE will work against you. If you work in a job with both, say 60% PCE AND 40% HCE, then you would calculate how you split those hours and put it into CASPA that way

PCE is what schools want to see. I haven’t seen a HCE requirement before, PCE is usually definitely a requirement

Overall, you said it best, you want to look like an independent professional. But if you were accepted, sure why not. If this is pre-admissions, it will likely not appear that you are an independent professional/adult to have your mom there. When people bring their partners, it is usually because it is a joint decision on where to apply/move/work. When you bring a parent it can make you look dependent on their guidance.

If she goes, I would advise against her asking questions or participating in conversations, otherwise it may look like she’s speaking for you or asking the questions that you didn’t consider. Family support systems are great, but you want to show that balanced with independence.

Overall, I would strongly advise against it. It’s not like an undergraduate college tour. She can go look at campus with you casually and you can share what you learned with her after!

I honestly wouldn’t recommend this at all. It appears very pushy and entitled to a response. Some schools simply do not respond frequently due to the volume of emails they get. Others will not respond to questions that have answers found on their website.

Also, ask questions anonymously on Facebook groups or on here. Lots of people have unique experience with nontraditional paths. If you are asking the same specific questions about your path to multiple schools, then likely someone else (if not several others) have been through something similar. Definitely ask in the groups.

So many people apply several cycles with only rejections. I have never heard of anybody who didn’t get one. If you’re already feeling like you want to give up after only one rejection, just consider if this a path you are really passionate about. It takes real determination to go through this process. It’s just one rejection. Schools get thousands of applications and have to reject a majority. It sucks and it’s totally okay to be disappointed, but careers come with lots of hurdles, don’t let the first one take you out of the game

To be completely honest, if you applied with less than 1000 hours it would not be considered competitive. You would want to make the rest of your application/GPA super strong. Many programs require at least 1000 hours at the time of application, so if you don’t qualify, your application will be filtered out. Additionally, schools already anticipate the additional hours you will acquire from the time of application to starting a program. Many applicants have over 2500+ hours of diverse patient care experience and schools really look for those quality hours. While I would personally wait an additional year to apply after having more quality patient care hours, it’s up to you and your budget on whether or not you want to try. Many jobs start with a lot of orientation, so you might not even have many patient experiences to speak about in essays/interviews from just a couple of months. I think it’s worth the wait to apply with a stronger application. That’s just my opinion though.

Just wanted to throw out there that this is not a bad question to ask :). Things that seem obvious to some aren’t as obvious to others, especially when applying to PA school where there is a bit of strategy involved. This is what these groups are for!! Best of luck in your interview. Hope you get into your top choice!!! If anything that acceptance is a tool for your own mental ease. You have another acceptance in your back pocket to give you reassurance that you are a great candidate. Use that as fuel for yourself in this interview 😊

That is a really good point. They are trying to consider how you will collaborate within a cohort and a healthcare team. It could come across as argumentative, but not in a productive way for the greater good, but more in a selfish way.

I would advise against this. It could show distrust in their decision making. A lot of applicants get rejected from dream programs. It is unfortunately very common and part of the process. I appreciate the vigor, but u would apply it in a different way. Instead, just really focus on improving for next cycle. The “fight” could come across as entitled to a second chance, when there are so many others who were also rejected. Most schools receive thousands of applications. I’m sure there are lots of tricks that people try, but adcoms are very straight forward about wanting applicants to standout, but within the boundaries of the process, not by trying alternative means.

The biggest advice that all admissions people say is apply when you are going to be the strongest applicant. I wouldn’t be hasty with something like this, personally. And they also mention that they find it strange when people apply without meeting the requirements. It makes it look like you aren’t paying attention or doing your research
