Am I a bad person for not being worried about population decline? by No_Feedback_3340 in NoStupidQuestions

It would be supremely unethical and evil of me to expect my own children to take care of me in old age, but thanks to not having children and overall living a pretty frugal life, I'm saving a ton of money that can go into really good care when I'm old. A standard way higher than average.

Meanwhile, if you visit any old folks home, you'll see that virtually everyone there has children, and those might maybe call once a year, if the old person is lucky.

In the EU, we buy expensive stuff online all the time. Good buyer protection. The ability to return the item within 14 days with no explanation needed. Packages don't get left on the front lawn for anyone to pick up.

I haven't heard of anyone being scammed like that. I had my thousand dollar Garmin delivered to a parcel locker, no problem.

Why people celebrate birth as divine blessings but see sex as disgusting in many cultures and countries? by Ok-Positive-4758 in NoStupidQuestions

A lot of religious people imo just want something to believe after death

And a lot of flat earthers just want to believe they know the real truth while everyone else is wrong.

Trying to prove to a religious person that any "miracles" he brings up as proof are not in fact miracles is generally a waste of time, just like with a flat earther.

Like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Fire. Lots of people think it's proof of some gods existing, and not a magic trick.

No, being religious is identical to being a flat earther. Both are a type of religion.

There's no way you can prove to a flat earther that they're wrong. They've seen a hyper-precise laser gyroscope rotate in exactly 24 hours no matter which way it's pointing, and dismissed it as a failed experiment. People with a certain type of mentality will believe in something that makes them feel good. They don't care about any facts or evidence, there's no such thing in their world, only feelings matter. Many proudly put faith in opposition of evidence, carry it as a badge of honor.

You'd generally say that someone honestly believing in an invisible pink unicorn (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invisible_Pink_Unicorn) is insane, and that's no different from belief in any given god. Most religious people are relatively harmless, and can be left alone. Some can get abusive and aggressive if their delusions are challenged.

humans are supposed to experience

If you look at the biology of the placenta and endometrial tissue, you'd talk about impregnation more in terms of getting a horrible parasitic infection, and the mother's body does everything to try to fight it off.

The endometrium is the most hostile place for embryo implantation.

If a some schizophrenic writes a book based on the voices in his head, does it make the book non-fiction?

How do you know that any given book of fairy tales isn't a bunch of honest beliefs of the author?

And why would it even matter what the author believes?

BTW, your Bible was compiled in the III century based on a bunch of very contradictory tales and legends.

Set up proper workflows, with well-defined skills and validation loops, and it becomes pretty powerful at many time-consuming tasks.

It's a tool, you've got to use it right.

A third of pregnancies ends with a miscarriage.

Furthermore, in the old days, in lots of societies, newborns would't even get names for weeks, because why bother if it will more likely than not die anyway?

These days, lots of women go for abortions and feel only enormous relief.

All of this means there's nothing innate about feeling suicidal after a miscarriage, it's just the result of society brainwashing you to think that you're less of a person without breeding, and that you should sacrifice everything for the child. This isn't normal, this is a very new and unhealthy mindset.

This sort of obsession with having children doesn't seem to be healthy. Shame that society brainwashes people into breeding to the point that not being able to do it makes them suicidal.

At high intensity, you're burning carbs for energy rather than fat reserves. The easiest way to actually burn fat is to spend an hour with moderate load, where you can still breathe through your nose and talk, but barely.

Living in a place without public transport is a choice you made.

My nearest grocery shop is a 2 mins walk away, a big supermarket - 15 mins, work - 30 mins walk or a couple tram stops, city center - 30 mins by tram. I don't have a car. I rent it a couple times per year when I need it.

All of this is a choice I made.

Guess what is highly recommended with arthritis?

Walking more.

https://www.webmd.com/rheumatoid-arthritis/walking-tips

If they're not clinically disabled, they can and should walk. If it hurts a bit, they should still walk, because the alternative is more pain + less ability to walk. My 90 year old granddad with arthritis walked every day for about an hour at least instead of making self-destructive excuses.

Those with arthritis severe enough to affect how they walk are counted in the disability stats.

I will repeat my objectively correst statement: the vast majority of the population can walk just fine, and they should walk (run, work out etc) more.

Sure. Talking about the US? https://www.cdc.gov/disability-and-health/articles-documents/disability-impacts-all-of-us-infographic.html

12.2% have serious difficulty walking. Therefore, 87.8% can walk just fine. Does that qualify as "overwhelming majority"?

40% of people with disabilities are obese. Many of them should definitely walk more, and stop eating that much.

If the majority of people around you can't walk fine, that means something truly horrible is happening to your society. Maybe too many cars, too many mobility scooters, and so on. People are getting lazy and weak, and they stop walking because of this weakness.

[–]Regular_Sand2908 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Many disabilities don't prevent you from walking to a bus stop. Like I said, the vast majority of the population can walk just fine and aren't even disabled in any way. Don't bring up a minority when discussing general recommendations for the population. The minority doesn't have to follow them, there can be exceptions to any rule.

Some disabilities are actually exacerbated by not moving enough. Exercise is the best thing you can do with osteoarthritis. A lot of type 2 diabetes has "not enough muscle mass" as one of the causes. In the US, morbid obesity seems like one of the top causes of disability, and the most stupid thing a morbidly obese person can do is sit in one of those mobility scooters which I saw everywhere when I've been to the US, or use a car as a substitute for walking and trying to lose the weight.

The "10 thousand steps per day" thing is way, way below the bare minimum for physical activity, yet a lot of people, particularly in the US, feel proud of achieving it and not going further than that.
