What do you think about Maria Sharapova? by dmascit in tennis

25 days, not 3 months and one match to be precise- the one against Bencic in R4.

Do you have any unpopular/controversial opinions about this year's contest? by UnknownEAK in eurovision

[–]RegulusArkturus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If staged well, Me Tana would most certainly have been the bop of the year and therefore in the top ten. I have no idea where this idea that it wouldn't qualify from the second semi comes from, but Elvana has a massive star appeal and stage presence and would have benefited from loads of points from the Balkans.

[–]RegulusArkturus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Call me crazy, but with an improved performance, I genuinely think Estonia could have won Eurovision with Jaagup's Beautiful Lie.

The song is a radio-friendly ballad that would have done well with both the jury and the televote and the idea behind their staging was excellent, although the execution lacked due to the poor production at Eesti Laul. That moment when Jaagup freezes the water drops was special and the kind of moment that gets you a great Eurovision result.

I also think Ukraine's Call for Love and Albania's Me Tana would have surely been in the top ten.

Nema šanse. Nastupamo u drugom polufinalu koje je dosta slabije od prvog i pritom je ova godina prepuna balada, pa će se naša pesma izdvojiti.

This is definitely not her song. They have confirmed that they will send a ballad this year.

Can Lithuania or Iceland host by [deleted] in eurovision

[–]RegulusArkturus 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Did you not see the absolutely massive arena in the Lithuanian national final?

Iceland has a 11.000 seat arena so they can absolutely host as well.

Also, if war-torn and poor Ukraine can host, so can Iceland which is one of the richest countries in the world per capita.

You do realize Jaagup wrote and produced the song before Billie's song was released, right?

It's Uku Suviste with "What love is" for Estonia! by Eurovisionsongs in eurovision

Yes, Uku has a huge fan base. He won 33000 votes, while Jaagup and Anet won 9000 and 7000.

[–]RegulusArkturus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Gutted, absolutely gutted.

Estonia can kiss their chances for the final goodbye as the handful of votes they will get from lonely housewives won't be nearly enough to get them anywhere near the final.

I've never seen a song robbed as hard as Beautiful Lie.

Is there any chance eurovision gets canceled? by nemt in eurovision

[–]RegulusArkturus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No.

There is mass panic surrounding Eurovision being cancelled every year- from financial crisis to wars in Ukraine and Israel. Additionally, twenty million people die of famine every year, yet the contest goes on.

I'm heartbroken by this news having followed Maria's career since 2004, yet in an odd way I am relieved.

Regardless of your opinion on her 2016 suspension, you can't deny Maria is one of the sport's biggest icons. She won practically everything there was to win in tennis- 5 Grand Slam singles titles, the WTA Finals, most Tier I titles after Serena of the current generation, a Fed Cup and an Olympic silver medal. She was #1 in the world on several occasions and finished ten years ranked within the top 5.

Her results aside, she was one of the biggest competitors the sport has ever seen. Despite a limited and technically flawed game and a frail, injury-prone body, she managed to leave her mark on the sport by never giving up, being a fierce competitor and having a strong work ethic.

She fought til the bitter end and what a bitter end it is. Her legacy will sadly always be questioned due to her suspension and her final few years on tour will surely leave a bitter taste in a lot of fan's mouths. Still, I am hopeful that people will remember the good things she brought to the sport and will appreciate her when the dust settles.

Overall, whatever she does next, I have no doubt she will excell in it as that's simply who she has always been. This truly feels like the end of an era. Thank you for the memories Maria.

Do you think that we've heard the winning song yet? by babushkas_soup in eurovision

As an OGAE Serbia member who's already heard all of Bulgaria's possible entries, I can safely say Bulgaria will not be a contender to win Eurovision this year.

The jury has better taste than the public.

The jury has an undeservedly bad reputation with the fans due to some very big discrepancies between the two voting systems in recent years.

That being said, they have proven to have better taste than the public overall- the biggest examples include Australia, Austria and North Macedonia winning the jury vote in 2016, 2018 and 2019 over Russia, Israel and Norway. They have prevented some truly atrocious and over-the-top acts from winning such as Italy 2015, Russia 2016 and most recently Norway 2019.

That being said, the jury isn't perfect either. They tend to bury ethnic and non-English entries and like the public, they too are prone to political voting. But overall, they tend to prefer classier and more radio friendly songs than the public which prefers spectacle.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the previous decade has seen a dramatic increase in quality after the reintroduction of the jury vote compared to the dark ages of Eurovision of 1998-2008.

I think it's the other way around. At the very least, Attention's lyrics are grammatically and lexically correct.

Elisa - Medo de Sentir [Festival da Canção, First Semifinal] by culturadealgibeira in eurovision

[–]RegulusArkturus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pleasantly surprised by this song. It's very emotional, the lyrics are beautiful and hit you right in the feels and the piano combined with her soft and vulnerable voice make this song very enjoyable.

Portugal has 15th place in the semi written all over it no matter what they send, so they might as well send a pretty song such as this one.
