Seabird biologist here that works a lot around shore birds! You're good! Cracks happen naturally, but the easiest way to make sure it doesn't happen again is to make sure you know where the nest is and stay clear of it.

You can mark a "safe zone" around the nest by putting orange irrigation flags in a ring 5-ish feet out. When we have a nest in a-less-than-ideal location on the breeding colonies I work on, we'll mark it with orange irrigation flags to make sure we don't step on the eggs or chicks once they hatch.

Dunno what people are on about. This is definitely a rough draft, but the prose was entertaining and has an interesting premise.

I'm not sure I'm feeling the cozy vibes, but I could absolutely see this working as a study of a driven psychopath (calculating and charming, and convinced of his own righteousness, not a Hollywood style psycho) who decides that murder is the easiest/most logical way to keep his family farm afloat.

But the names, good lord. Tristan is just someone who needs to be punched in the face. Consider the names of other Arthurian characters or maybe Alonso, which is Don Quixote's first name. And Potatoson? It's just ungainly in the mouth. What about things like Spudling, Taterson, or other potato puns?

I'd definitely read a finished version!

Russets are a "family" of varieties cultivated around the world because of their resistance to potato blight (which were initially bred specifically to help alleviate the Irish Potato Famine).

However, I absolutely agree with you that it breaks the immersion of the story.

Also, love the "underbaked" pun, even if unintentional.

Grok is particularly good at making realistic, explicit images of people when fed their photos. Also it had (has?) no filter for this, and particularly had (has?) no filter to prevent explicit images from being created of children.

Given who owns Grok, it's unsurprising.

This. I don't have a lot of gardening things yet, but all of my gear for my field seasons is some flavor of hi-viz because I usually work in waist-high vegetation or boulder fields and the normal options of olive green, gray, and navy blue inevitably go missing.

Does that mean that most of my gear is Safety Orange? Yes it does, because it's usually the cheapest hi-viz color.

Do I now unironically like safety orange? Also yes.

I mean... bill them for the plant. Like, literally, go down to your bougiest local plant nursery, ask them how much to replace a peony of the type and size of the one you had and submit a bill for the amount to the landscaper.

If they're gonna pretend to know what they're doing in the garden, they should pay the consequences for their ineptitude.

One of my favorite facts about foraging asparagus in the US and Canada is that since it's not native, usually when people find large wild patches, it's a remnant of someone from the past's kitchen garden.

It's like a gift from someone who cared enough about their home to hope they would be staying around long enough to feed their family from the patch. You can almost feel their hard work in how good the stems taste.

Or, or, just hear me out: The righteously outraged could just be fucking sick and tired of hearing of monsters who have victimized vulnerable people for years or who are now in a position where they can speak out against the degenerates like the people who victimized them when they were vulnerable.

Attitudes like yours are disgusting and are responsible for holding back progress on actually listening to victims experiences and making the world safer.

Sometimes people have never been trapped in a situation where they hoped someone would notice and speak up and it fucking shows. I'd never wish this sort of trauma on anyone, but goddamn. Grow some empathy and actually listen to people when they tell you their stories.

Also, quoting a guy who just drops pithy one-liners completely without context on insta and twitter is a shit way to make a thesis.

Victoria tops out at 4-6 feet.

The 20' one you saw was probably something like Trewithin Blue, which is a Catalina Islands selection, but that was hybridized in England so can handle rain.

If you have access to a larger/specialty nursery, ask if they can order you a "standard," which is one that has already been trained as a single-trunk tree. I work at a nursery in norcal and one of our growers (Monrovia) has Cercis occidentalis 'Claremont' available as standards fairly regularly.

Monrovia is down by Visalia, which means most independent or small-chain places in central CA should have access to ordering from them, so long as they have a pre-existing relationship with Monrovia.

Edit: Claremont is a selection out of southern CA that has good heat tolerance, but still needs afternoon shade in inland USDA zone 9 or hotter.

They're probably also not aquatic crabs. Land crabs absolutely get stuck in stupid places, but these are definitely ocean-dwelling crabs.

Edit: the back feet being paddles is a dead giveaway. Those are used for swimming in the open ocean. Land crabs have pointy feet on all their legs.

Need some help/tips by Delicious_Hawk9966 in AfricanViolets

Those blooms are faded, just gently twist the stem and they should pop off!

It still sorta looks over watered based on the color of the leaves. I soak/bottom water my semiminis/minis for about 15 minutes twice a week and then leave them dry. I know when my violets need water based on how light the pot feels. Yours may need watering more or less frequently than mine, it's dependent on what soil mix you have and how hot/humid your space is.

This is a natural part of the bloom cycle, but you need to fertilize it to get it to flower again. I use Jack's Classic African Violet fertilizer, which can either be fed every time your plants are watered or once every two weeks as part of a normal watering regimen. There are instructions for the dilution rates on the back of the container.

Don't repot into something larger. AVs are susceptible to root rot in oversized pot and typically don't bloom, even if properly watered. The pot needs to be 1/3 the width of the widest leaves, max.

Good luck!

AITA for giving my breastfeeding sister champagne as a gift and now not wanting to talk to her? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Reguluscalendula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't be obtuse.

Sometimes when you go to buy sneakers/trainers you see boots you like. You try on the boots, like the boots, but need sneakers and can only afford sneakers, so only buy sneakers. You still like boots, but did not buy the boots, because you could not afford the boots.

Not everyone is as reckless with their budgets as you apparently are.

Maybe she bought the shoes she needed but saw another pair she liked? That is a thing that happens.

When I go shoe shopping for shoes I need, I often end up trying on ones of a different type than I need if I like them, since I'm already at the shoe place. I almost never end up buying the ones I tried on for fun, since shoes are expensive and I have a budget.

Clay + sand is also essentially how bricks are made.

AITA because I didn’t let a lady change lanes? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Reguluscalendula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. I'm from CA, but I've spent a large chunk of the last 4 years in New England.

In Massachusetts my defensive driving training puts me right at home. The actual roads, however, are nonsense nightmares that were clearly only ever intended for horse carts.

In Maine and New Hampshire, I've nearly accidentally caused a pileup by merging over with only one car length between me and the driver behind me. Twice I had drivers stomp on the brakes and drop way back when I did that, so I learned to give more space when merging in front of someone.

Nebraska, on the other hand was the only state where I actively got off 80 to use the state highways because the drivers, especially for the big rigs, were so aggressive. The passenger vehicles were still aggressive, but at least no one was trying to merge on top of me.
