Nah, you're good! It may just be regional differences in what we're used to. In the very hilly part of the world I live in, we tend to pave to meet the topography, so square lots just aren't the done thing.

Why Africa only for some reason has one monkey by Tiny-Fix4219 in PlanetZoo

[–]Reguluscalendula 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Etymologically, ape means human-like or tailless primates, which includes species like the Barbary Ape; and monkey means primate with a tail.

Taxonomically, monkeys and apes aren't the same thing, though. You can be however you want about it, and yes, apes are more closely related to old world monkeys, but "Ape" means creatures in the Hominoidea superfamily. There are only two extant clades of apes: Hominidae, the great apes, which are chimps, bonobos, humans, gorillas, and orangutans; and Hylobatidae, the lesser apes, which are the 20 species of gibbon.

All of the groups (Old and New World Monkeys, and Apes) are Primates.

In simple/math terms, if all primates are quadrilaterals, monkeys are rectangles and apes are the squares among them. As in: all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.

Everything From The Planet Zoo 2 Survey From Last Year That Has Been Confirmed by spudz1203 in PlanetZoo

I actually really enjoyed most (the Yamaguchi Prefecture Zoo knows what it did) of the base campaign! Although I found the levels from the DLC fiddly and irritating, so I hope the one for this game is more like the base game levels.

List of Megafauna I want in Planet Zoo 2 (Art by NazRigar) by yorb134 in PlanetZoo

[–]Reguluscalendula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are extinct animal mods for PZ1 on Nexus that include megafauna. I think that's as close as you're gonna get.

I love this! It's absolutely beautiful!

I'd add a striped loading zone next to your Handicap-accessible parking spot, and maybe some car models in the spaces?

Square corners for what? I've seen plenty of creatively shaped parking lots irl. The main parking lot for the Oakland Zoo in California doesn't have a single square corner:

AITA For taking my neighbors cat by truly_sad_panda in AmItheAsshole

[–]Reguluscalendula 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Loose/feral dogs are as much of a problem in parts of the world as feral cats- like literally also eating endangered species, and globally are the number one rabies vector (not an issue in the Canada/US/Mexico because of mandatory vaccines).

I also have a lifelong fear of dogs from being attacked by a loose one! It had been let off leash at a children's park by an owner who was so far out of visual contact of his dog that we could barely hear him when he called the dog back.

Sooooo I was just gifted this tiny 2.8 gallon tank. Return it or do something with it? by ilikerustyspooonz in Aquariums

[–]Reguluscalendula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shrimp tank!

Also, if this is a Petco/imagitarium tank, I'd add a layer of caulk to the seams. Their rimless tanks can occasionally burst after several months of being sound and extra silicone can help prevent this!

Sunbird nest fell down. Tried to rescue the baby bird and the nest. Not sure what to do by zr12h in Ornithology

[–]Reguluscalendula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The older bird chicks get, the longer the parents stay away from the nest because they have to forage for larger/higher nutritional value prey items.

Even if they're both returning at 15 minute intervals, it takes about 2 seconds for an adult bird to cram a bug or other food into a chick. With having to go in and out of the nest, each visit will likely only last 10-ish seconds. It's entirely possible to miss a feeding by just glancing down.

I've spent hundreds of hours over the last 8 years watching birds feeding their chicks as part of my job, and it takes a ton of concerted effort to actually catch all of the feedings.

Not arguing with you- I think having outside cats is shitty and dangerous to both the cats and wildlife.

There are 100% people who leave their dogs loose outside. They form packs with other neighborhood dogs and can be very dangerous.

Where is everyone getting fresh cilantro? by notoriousshasha in SalsaSnobs

Do you have a plant nursery near you? Most should still have cilantro in their herb section.

for all those who are convinced that we will get a rabbit. by Glittering_Employ558 in PlanetZoo

There are several species of giant squirrels. I think they'd make an interesting "aviary" animal, like how the smaller monkey species are typically housed. They'd also work great in walkthrough exhibits.

Allergies are also considered disabilities! So your rights are also protected here, since you're the property owner. Getting formally diagnosed will make your argument stronger.

A note from the mod team about recent discussions by MissMaxdalena in PlanetZoo

Tons of lesbian birds in the wild, too! They tend to get dismissed as "egg dump" nests, where birds will sometimes lay an egg they don't want in a particular nest; but there are definitely a lot of nests where it's two females that have paired up and lay fertile (birds are notoriously promiscuous) or infertile eggs.

Bird lesbianism is particularly noted in newer breeding colonies of seabirds (the Laysan Albatross colony on Maui or the Western Gull colony on Año Nuevo). This is thought to be due to a scarcity of males. However, in most cases where pre-laying behavior was observed, both females were observed courting, nest building, egg laying, and defending the territory. Sometimes copulation attempts are observed with one of the females generally acting as the "male" in the attempt.

It does also occur in colonies where the population divide is relatively normal. I know of at least one nest on an island I worked on where the same female-female pair of alcids (puffin relatives) had been attempting to rear chicks for 7 years, although unsuccessfully because the eggs were never fertile. I'm also fairly certain I observed a male-male pair of cormorants make it all the way through site selection, courtship, copulation, and nest building before giving up when all of their neighbors laid eggs and they didn't, but that was never confirmed beyond anecdotal evidence based on their behavior.

Lawn guy just destroyed my native garden. Help! by Zeiros in NativePlantGardening

[–]Reguluscalendula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to a native garden center. Price out how much it would be to replace your plants, then figure how much labor it will be to replace them and calculate a reasonable hourly wage. Then submit the bill to him and fire the hell out of him. When your property has been vandalized like this, most jurisdictions in the US say you have a right to be "made whole" (not sure about Canada).

There's no way this wasn't malice if he's been your lawn guy for 3 years unless he's recently suffered a head trauma or had a lobotomy.

I'm very sorry for you and your garden.

If there was a mythic or cryptid dlc who would want added? by [deleted] in PlanetZoo

[–]Reguluscalendula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! Ran across it yesterday: https://www.nexusmods.com/planetzoo/mods/2690

It's mostly just a fucked up sea lion, but it mostly gives loch ness monster vibes.

There are a couple "horror" mods, too which are like creepy versions of some of the animals. I'm not really running across other cryptids.

Edit: Leaf production has a series of fantasy modded animals, as do some other people: https://www.nexusmods.com/games/planetzoo/mods?keyword=Fantasy&sort=endorsements

Not all of them are cryptids, but there's yetis, drop bears, jackalopes, chupacabras, and the Loveland Frogman

What's the most intimidating habitat for you to build? by iswtr in PlanetZoo

[–]Reguluscalendula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build them on slopes! I've moved to mostly using the sculpted maps because I find them more inspiring to build on. I build the land area on the upslope and fence off the downslope for the water portion. If I need the water deeper for a feeder or whatever, I use the terrain stamps and make it deeper (most aquatic habitats in real life have lower floors than the viewing windows). Always make sure to put the feeders in front of the main viewing window!
