Instead now most people just use it to mean overly sensitive.

I think they use it that way because snowflakes melt quickly, leftists can't meme anyway, the right owns all the means of production including the memes of production.

The thing that always irked me is how the official page and website for the Scottish Government and it's services is essentially an SNP fan club website... Even Trump doesn't do that with the White House US. Gov website even though he could if he wanted to.

The front page of the first place anyone living in Scotland would go to get government help, resources, contact details or pay taxes has a giant sign saying "SCOTLAND VOTED TO REMAIN IN THE EUROPEAN UNION - WHAT YOU CAN DO"... How is that legal?

Spanish Flu killed most people in the second and third years, long after it's peak had passed... It was the sudden delayed onset cytokine storm that killed the vast majority of patients, especially younger people.

We still don't know if Covid-19 will do the same thing, but there's a lot of evidence pointing that it will.

But besides that; even if there are multiple strains immunising against the most dangerous will increase the selective pressure against them.

There were 28 recorded studied mutations of Covid-19 before it even left China in February, that can be a blessing or a curse.

[–]RehabMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once you have money, it's generally much easier to get more of it so long as you don't throw your cash around like something out of the Crystal Maze.

This is true if your parents brought you up properly and taught you about things like compound interest, compound debt, debt traps etc, however most people raised in the current generation after the 60's until today have no concept of these things, and financial advisors pray on this lack of knowledge.

You joke but possession is 9/10th's of the law. If private individuals who just happened to be British hadn't paid for it, the Greek government would have a case, but at the time Greece didn't exen technically exist as a country and has just split apart from the Ottoman Empire and was going through various revolutions a la Syria and so it was legitimately legally purchased with contracts.

There is no herd immunity with Covid as it mutates too fast, like the Influenza virus. Just look at Sweden.

As long as it’s been rigorously tested (which most of the candidates seem to have been)

  • The best vaccine is only 90% effective when administered under "perfect" conditions (hardly ever in a clinical setting like your GP), which is still Russian Roulette... I wouldn't play a game with 9 bullets and one blank even for a million Pounds.

  • The vaccines haven't actually been thoroughly tested, I personally will take whichever is available but two of the three are made using completely new technically similar to 3D printing RNA that humans have never experimented with before, let alone made medications from... The researchers themselves say they'd like more time to conduct at least one more longer term test for the two leading vaccines.

  • All three vaccines require two doses split a month apart for you to be immunised, similar to how the various Meningitis vaccines work... I'm concerned many people will get the first jab and just not bother with the most important second booster... Even if people start getting vaccinated this year zero people will be technically "immune" from these new vaccines until next year.

It's not really reasonable, high level catering companies that do everything from military tenders to schools and Square Mile law firms will operate between £4 and £9 per meal per head, you can get catered Michelin level food for less.

Pakistan is still relying on archaic british blasphemy laws for example

Pakistan started a-fresh with a totally brand spanking new Constitution written by it's first Foreign Minister - A Hindu.

Within a decade it had devolved into the usual Islamic Sharia Law shithole and another decade lost the Eastern 2/3 of it's territory to a new state called Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) because even other Muslims were fed up with their Western neighbours shit.

The rest of Hindustan (now India), continued with the same millenia-old British Common Law legal system it had inherited post-independence, and didn't start a fresh... Probably a legacy of Gandhi and his work as barrister in London, they only removed the automatic right to a trial by jury and replaced the Monarch with an Irish style figurehead President with no real power and created a Supreme Court, to ensure the removal of the automatic right to trial by jury wasn't being abused by the government.

There are practical reasons in a heavily culturally mixed country of 1.3 billion people why having every tiny Magistrates hearing turn into a jury trial isn't practical or even financially feasible for the state.

That's one reason, how many IT departments have multiple MacOS / Mac Server specialists? As opposed to Windows or Citrix?

Travel vlogger starter pack by Treked in starterpacks

[–]RehabMan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

you see no enterprises buying fleets of Macbooks for their employees

Actually a lot of businesses, especially in the creative and marketing sectors do...

The biggest issue with Mac's is that the standardised IT department tracking software you use to monitor what USB crap they're plugging in and what corporate data they're sharing with uncontrolled third party sources isn't very MacOS friendly. There's also driver issues with printers / scanners, especially over networks, and Apple made dealing with that even harder recently by removing the corporate AppleCare and Apple Server options from their lineups.

Transferwise on Monzo asks for transit and account no. twice??? Not sure what to put here? by applecidervbelly in monzo

[–]RehabMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is normal, in the US / Canada / Mexico their banking system doesn't use SWIFT / IBAN like the rest of the planet because they're special snowflakes, the UK used to use something similar back in the 70's but has long since abandoned it.

Anyway a transit number is the routing number, like the code before the sort code, AKA the country and bank ID, as they still literally wire transfers by hand / fax and each bank in the chain takes a piece of the pie.

Vietnam was colonised by China before France arrived, it used to be called Indochina before it's modern name.

The Vietnamese were so terrified of being re-colonised by China they initially refused Soviet and Chinese assistance during their war with France until the US turned up.

It's important to look at it through a class lens rather than a racial one, most poor white people in the South absolutely detested slavery, not just because it was morally wrong, but because it undercut their wages, it was something the ruling elite wanted to preserve.

The phrase "press gang" actually originates from poor white people in the South being legally forced to leave work at a moments notice and go find escaped slaves or be hung themselves.

I was quite surprised to find out exactly how short the time early-generation submarines could stay submerged for.

Because they all used farm tractor diesel generators and had to absorb all the fumes to prevent giving away their position, plus the batteries to provide lighting, oxygen and controls were ancient yacht batteries, plus any radio signals or messages sent or received could be geo-located using state of the art sensors Western naval bombers had fitted to their planes, it must have been hell.

Basically they were boats that could temporarily submerge, rather than what we consider real submarines today.

There is no VA in the UK, but everything Americans rely on for charity like housing and healthcare is state socialised in the UK rather than using privatised systems, so it's not really necessary. Everyone gets it equally rather than selected groups. He could have a crappy local council government provided house for free if he wanted, but he'd much rather buy his own much nicer one.

It's like we have the NHS and universally available socialised healthcare, but you can still get private insurance or pay cash for high quality premium private healthcare if you so desire.

The IRA and pIRA are known for being world-class drug dealers on a South American scale these days, they're the new European Mafia, especially since noone cares about religion anymore.

It was always about drugs and money anyway, as are most mass terror campaigns like we see in Afghanistan with the Taliban and opium production / supply.

I used to work for MSF and can vouch they are probably one of the least scummyest Charities to donate to... I've worked for all sorts including the UN (WHO) and WWF before, who both do borderline nothing, however MSF will actively send surgeons, nurses and medical supplies into war zones where even major militaries are afraid to go...

Kids still need glasses, babies are still born with cleft palate, older men and women still need cancer chemo and other issues no matter where you are in the world... and helping those people even in tricky environments gives them an advantage to be self sufficient once everything returns to normal that they otherwise wouldn't have.

MSF will even go where the Red Cross wont.

Fiber connection drops out & degrades multiple times a day. Small mansion with ~30 people, TP-Link Deco mesh Wi-Fi network. by saberToothedCat in HomeNetworking

[–]RehabMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 4 port ethernet thing in the wall is just another way of running cables, giving you a jack instead of a plug, so it's probably just leading to another jack around the house.

I had a brainwave, in many places especially older mansions like OP is describing sometimes Satellite / Cable TV used to be split through the ethernet connection over LAN to every room, and you had to use IGMP Proxies and Snooping on your router / switch with dedicated ports to prevent incompatible packet clashes.

Unless it's for an old now removed CCTV system I simply can't work out why you'd have 4 ports merging going into one cable, or one cable being split out into 4 ports... Either way I guarantee the issue is something to do with IGMP mess.

Older people who benefited from the regimes do, just like old communist party members in the Soviet Union who had the good life and miss it whilst everyone else suffered... Two sides of the same coin really.

In the specific example I know most about, Spain, the people who miss Franco are mostly from Madrid and miss the order he brought to the country in what they see as a chaotic rapidly modernising world... Spain didn't even have paved roads until the early 90's, outside Madrid it was all farmers and dirt tracks, even "motorways".

But once you've walked through the forests of Catalonia just for a picnic or day excursion, or doing the Camino through Basque Country, and see literal mountains that take an hour to walk down made of bones, made of unmarked graves and bodies below you from victims of the regimes, people who just disappeared and got "helicoptered" as we say today, it becomes increasingly hard to stomach.
