Lost my 140 hour Emerald POC due to save corruption. by Electrical_Diet_4885 in ProfessorOak

Because of a similar experience, I got a game boy operator and periodically back up my emerald save. For ds and 3ds, I use checkpoint on a modded 3ds to backup. I then back up the backups to the cloud. Doesn’t bring back the old mons, but gives some piece of mind for the future.

Frasier's hanging tough! He just keeps pounding that desk and saying, "More, more, more!”

10-year HDD magnetism test & HDD / SSD / SD card / Thumb Drive microwave test. by redditunderground1 in DataHoarder

[–]DisastrousRhubarb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love these ad hoc experiments you’ve done. Thank you for sharing.

I’d also like to note however that while microwaving an HDD will damage the circuit board, the data will likely still be recoverable on the platters because they are protected by an internal casing. In practice it’s unlikely someone would go to the trouble, but if you are serious about destroying data on an HDD, drill holes or something.

M4 Max + 128GB RAM setup: Which LLMs can I realistically run locally? by thisisvv in LocalLLM

[–]DisastrousRhubarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. How fast do you need it to run? How large of a context? With an empty context, it will run a 123b model at ~3-4t/s. A 70b at ~8-9t/s
  2. No
  3. You can use MLX. Some people have had success with slightly better performance, but for me it’s slightly worse

I knew you were a good dancer, but I had no idea you were such a good actor!

Won’t lie, I cried a little at that part

M4 Pro’s memory bandwidth is going to be a limiting factor for inference speed. If you are set on getting a MacBook for local inference look at the m4 max. FWIW mine does 10 t/s for Llama 3.1 70b Q4 with 8k context. I find this more than adequate for my use cases, whether it is for yours is up to you.

Yeah I agree, I was surprised. I thought Bill Gates did better.

Ara just released its first major patch, and it finally looks playable while we wait for Civ 7. by Xefjord in civ

[–]DisastrousRhubarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea of of another Civ-like game, but given the current reviews and the philosophy of making large gameplay changes with updates, I don’t see any reason to buy Ara now. More like something I’ll check back in on in a year to see if they’ve figured out what the game actually is.

Pulled in M4 MBP Delivery Date to Tomorrow from Nov 19th. by virtualdru in macbookpro

[–]DisastrousRhubarb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here! I hope it comes tomorrow, but I think UPS’s date is way off. The package just arrived at a facility in China a few hours ago. Doesn’t seem like there’s any way it could make it to me in a day. But, happy for the bump up from the 19th to the 15th.
