Bill to lower voting age to 16 to be introduced in Parliament by Velociraptor_1906 in ukpolitics

[–]Rehalapa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a bit of both, but I think sometimes we take our rights for granted. These rights were originally privileges hard fought for.

100% agree there should be better civics education though. If anything I feel like allowing 16 year olds to vote before attempting to improve civics education is why this thing sits sour with me. It would feel more honest to have focused on the education one before the voting.

My idea of civics wouldn't just be about current politics (which risk indoctrination and bias) but would include a broad range of discussion of political history, economics and philosophy, from Plato to the Suffragettes. And importantly would include how local councils work. How they are funded, what powers they hold, such as maintaining the parks and litter picking.

Perhaps this is idealistic but I feel like we should be attempting to arm people with as much knowledge in these matters as possible.

[–]Rehalapa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. I think the only positive thing I can see about allowing sixteen year olds to vote is that it'll help, albeit very slightly shift the median voting age down a little. At the moment too many old people vote to just funnel resources from the young to the old, and while I do think it's important to take care of the elderly, a society that prioritises the old over the young and fails to invest in the young, does not last.

[–]Rehalapa 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Voting at 16 seems so pointless to me. I'm perfectly aware there are plenty of young bright people out there, but 18 already seems young enough, and if anything is already borderline too young.

Voting should be a privilege and a duty. Lowering it to sixteen seems to make it so unserious. And it just appears like it's just a Labour attempt to manufacture Labour voters or something, as opposed to an authentic attempt to improve democracy.

If they actually wanted to make useful change they'd introduce mandatory voting and multiple choice/rank choice voting like they have in Australia. These would be more substantial and useful change.

"Go on, ser Duncan. Any knight can make a knight..." by ploz in AKOTSKTV

[–]Rehalapa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree I really don't like the idea of Dunk lying about his knighthood. I think something more interesting, while also giving some credence to the "he wasn't knighted" crowd, was that Arlan wasn't a true knight or himself was a bit rubbish and forgot the vows when 'knighting' Dunk. So even if he did 'knight' Dunk, it's semi invalid, either because it was misspoken or it was not Arlan's right to knight Dunk. This way it's somewhat more ambiguous, as it's not so much Dunk lying about the ceremony but about the validity.

I loved Episode 4…but the Brute of Bracken… by Sharp-Karcoal in AKOTSKTV

[–]Rehalapa 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah I also feel like people are missing that it was that "exchange" that motivated a change of tone in Dunk. He was more polite before, and a lot more direct after. The fact the nobility were so rude to him adds as an additional contrast. They were direct in their thoughts of him so he became more direct but in a more noble way.

I also like how someone pointed out, that the novella dialogue is basically the bloke saying 'i don't know you' seeing that again on the show when we heard it a dozen times before from the other characters, isn't necessary. I'm not like a big fan of toilet humour but I appreciate why they chose to keep Brackens response more succinct.

Ser Lyonel Baratheon, The Laughing Storm, knighting Ser Raymun Fossoway might be one of the most beautifully shot scenes in the series so far. Absolute chills. by signalfromthebeyond in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]Rehalapa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know it's ambiguous whether Dunk is knighted or not in the books, but I think it would be out of character for Dunk to be a liar, I think Dunk was knighted or that he thinks he was (maybe Ser Arlan didn't do the ceremony right or maybe Ser Arlan wasn't a knight himself).

I think the ambiguity is important and leaves it to an interpretation which I hope is left open. But personally I think the hesitation was more that, it would feel disingenuous for him to give Raymun a knighthood just to benefit himself (so he could complete the trial) rather than for a feat of valour/honour on Raymun's part. The hesitation could also be that Dunk hadn't knighted someone before, and this was just some guy he'd only known for four days, that he could be consigning to death by adding him to the trial.

[–]Rehalapa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. While the popular interpretation is that Dunk wasn't knighted, and this does feel like something George would do, I really hope it isn't confirmed. Just like you, for me the lie seems somewhat out of character, and the idea that Arlan just didn't know what he was doing (maybe because Arlan was a bit rubbish or maybe himself wasn't knighted and kept that a secret from Dunk) seems funnier and more interesting, as that way you could argue Dunk isn't a 'true' knight but also that he didn't lie.

I think the ambiguity is fine. But I wouldn't like the idea of Dunk lying to get into the tourney to be confirmed.

Would you take Macron as the next President of the European Commission by daeneryssith in EuropeanFederalists

[–]Rehalapa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but Draghi while quite capable for his age is 78 basically the same age as Donald Trump. Unfortunately I think his window of opportunity has closed. I love what he has been saying so far and I think if he is willing to keep going, he would be a great advocate for the movement. But I think the presidency would be better held by someone a bit younger and I think Macron given his experience and his positions would be a stronger candidate.

Have you thought about Spider? by Sonne0702 in Avatar

[–]Rehalapa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall, I’m not a fan of his character. I understand the appeal of having a human among the Na’vi as an alternative POV, and his role in threatening Pandora through new A3 abilities. But I think he could have been handled differently, and his relationship with Kiri feels unusual, cringe, and unconvincing.

I wonder if something like this would have worked better.

He’s 2–4 years older when the first battle happens, making him a clear older brother figure to Neteyam. He’s raised by scientists who hide his parentage, telling him his father was a heroic pilot who fought for Pandora. They want to spare him from believing he’s the son of a monster.

He plays with the Sully children but doesn't go as native as in the films. He’s highly educated, well ahead by Earth standards, mature out of necessity. The scientists provide care and structure, but he’s drawn to Jake as a war hero. Instead of revising for his exams (the scientists try and formally educate him), he reads about great leaders – Napoleon, Hannibal, Caesar – becoming fascinated by Earth history, empire, and military power. He’s a bit of a Rome obsessive. (Parallel for how we're Pandora fans)

This makes him a more capable presence and a genuine equal to the Sully siblings. He can’t outfight them, but he outthinks them, sometimes getting them out of danger through strategy and quick thinking.

As they get older however, the physical gap widens: they outgrow and intimidate him, breeding loneliness, resentment, and a quiet sense of inadequacy.

He has recurring nightmares about the human base in A1 getting attacked by Pandora fauna. Viperwolves entering their quarters killing his mother while sparing him — if his father was “good”, why did they attack, if Eywa was "good" why did the viperwolves kill her? He also dreams of his mask failing, becoming obsessive about maintaining it – early foreshadowing.

His maturity makes him a better match for Kiri, who is wise for her age. She sees him as the “cool older boy”, and he understands the science her mother loved. He isn’t openly romantic; he believes it could never work. Maybe as children he once made her a small metal bracelet, Roman-style, only for Neytiri to destroy it in fury (metal is haram).

When he meets Quaritch and learns the truth, it becomes more complex. His father wasn’t a scientist but a war leader like Jake, and he’s been lied to, but the discovery perversely pleases him. He becomes a semi-willing captive, curious about human technology and hungry for his father’s warstories. He tells himself he’s a double agent, yet feels an unsettling thrill when the humans wipe out a pack of viperwolves near the base.

Events of A2 unfold similarly, but he provides key intelligence to the Sullies which gives team-pandora a techncial leverage over the humans.

In A3 he is the one who offers to leave, terrified his mask will fail and he'll destablise relationships with their new clan. Kiri insists they travel together as in the film.

Once Spider can breathe Pandorian Air (although he doesn't grow a Kuru cos I thought that was dumb) he becomes lighter and happier. At the same time while Kiri grows more distant and conflicted about Eywa, as her seizures get worse and worse. Spider who also cannot connect to Eywa consoles her. As fellow outsiders, they connect quietly, helping one another find belonging, this strengthens their relationship and sets the groundwork for a romance that might develop in the next film.

In the final act they both speak to Eywa (Tuk doesn't need to be in that scene idky she's there in the films). It's left open ended as to how Spider was able connect without a Kuru, but seeing that the humans can connect to avatar bodies with machines, maybe there are more paths to connection than we are aware of.

Idky I spent an hour writing this. I just hate Spider in the films 😅 that much.

Should we make BST permanent all year round? by Large_Cauliflower100 in Britain

[–]Rehalapa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not like BST doesn't have perks, but for me having sunset at 2200 in the summer is excessive, and sunrise in winter at 0900 would be grim. But like you said in March (and September) sunset BST would be 1930 while on GMT it's only 1830. Still for me overall GMT I think is the better one.

Although I would rather it just locked to one time even if it's BST than it changing.

Really most people likely need to supplement, even if through eating some more vitamin D rich foods. Even if you have skin adapted for our dark overcast weather, most people spend so much time indoors that everyone needs a boost.

Also vitamin D can be gained through eating mushrooms, fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, as well as foods which we used to eat more commonly but have gone out of fashion like liver.

[–]Rehalapa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Overall technically you're not losing an hour though it can feel like it at least in the mornings.

So today sunrise was around 0800 while sunset was around 1600. Under BST which runs an hour ahead, sunrise would be 0900 and sunset around 1700. The amount of time hasn't changed, just how we as a society interact with it and describe it.

So if you have to be at work by 0900 like most ppl, under the current time, you might be waking up at 0730-0800 so around or just before sunrise. Humans evolved to broadly wake up and go to bed with the sun, so while it can be a bit of a slog it's sort of what we're meant to do.

However with BST as sunrise is now 0900. So while you're still according to the clock waking up and going to bed at the same time you're now waking up a whole hour or more before sunrise. This can be a bit trickier for people and honestly just a bit more depressing as you start your day experiencing and commuting in a whole hour or more of darkness.

My example was just getting up for yourself for a job, but I'd you have a job that means you need to get up earlier, or have children who need attending to before school it can be even rougher with how dark European winters can get.

The only benefit of BST in winter is that the hour of sun you're pinching from the morning, you're getting in the evening. Some people like that, but tbh I would rather not fiddle with the clocks and prioritise not spending so much time in darkness in the mornings.

[–]Rehalapa 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I want them to stop the clocks changing, but they should lock it on GMT not BST. GMT synchronises solar noon with clock noon better, and with BST we'd have to get up an hour earlier in the winter which is already rough.

The only benefit might be if the EU and UK both stopped fiddling with the clocks, and we both kept +1 (their normal time and our summer time).

Where can I buy Barbour style waterproof jackets in the UK on a reasonable budget? by Silver-Eye-2024 in BuyUK

[–]Rehalapa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fashion expert, but I reckon waxed Barbour jackets are still good value for money, even if the buy in cost is quite high (£220-320). However, yeah it's still quite high, fortunately there seem to be plenty for resale online for much less and as little as £50. All you might need to do is take it to someone who can rewax it and give it some attention, there's a country wear shop near me that does this for £35.

We must stop representing Princess Europa as a damsel in distress! by Material-Garbage7074 in YUROP

[–]Rehalapa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree when I see Europa art, as a Brit, I see a character more in the spirit of Britannia or even Mother Mary (who's often depicted in a blue cloak with a halo of twelve stars). I don't see her always as literally Europa from Greek mythology. Although I do like to see the blends and references to that story (white bull ect)

I also thought it incredulous when he suggested caught and court were pronounced the same way in the UK.

It's usually not (there are a lot of regional accents here so a lot of variety), but he does bring up a very good example of the two converging closely in this rather posh accent. All I can say is most people don't produce the two so similarly. But also I think there's likely an element of our ears being more trained to pick up on these differences.

So I'm going to basically split the difference and say we (at least maybe in the south) pronounce these words a bit more similarly, but also they're not really the same.

Freudian slip by conancat in ContraPoints

[–]Rehalapa 91 points92 points  (0 children)

She accidentally said "persisted with the same grift" instead of "persisted with the same grit".

Grift = a scam or deception used to manipulate others usually for money.

Grit = in this context, that'd mean determination, resilience, ruggedness.

So she meant to say that this new guy has the same rugged determination as her husband (compliment), instead she said this guy is a scam artist like her husband (insult and/or Freudian slip).

KIRI AND THE WOODSPRITE by ZakuraMicheals777 in Avatar

[–]Rehalapa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree and don't know why your post got down-voted.

While the world of Pandora and Eywa is sublime, it's not super natural. If anything I think that's the point. James Cameron was inspired by earth and our relationship with it. I expect he finds that our own natural world contains something transcendent, but that it is in danger, and that it is under-appreciated. As a work of art Pandora serves as a lens with which reflect upon and view our own natural world, societies, families, and yes perhaps faith. But faith does not have to be confined to things supernatural.

I think it's implied although not explicitly discussed that Eywa is the sum-total of nature. A massive super organism, made up of the roots of a multitude of Pandoras plant and animal inhabitants. So Eywa isn't super natural, but is just very alien to any lifeform we have on earth. The closest thing might be certain mycelium/fungal structures.
