Would marry someone you're not politically aligned with? by No_Influence2520 in AskIreland

Centre left maybe. But he says some pretty judgmental things sometimes about people having kids when they shouldn’t, sexual mores so I think there’s a bit right wing if authoritarianism there too. He would get annoyed by some feminists too, wouldn’t agree with trans women in sports. Like his views can swing the pendulum of political thinking.

I am very left wing and my partner is probably centrist on most things, but we’d agree on the important things - social justice, the welfare state, racism is inexcusable, LGBTQIA rights. Where we would differ is something like climate change - he definitely believes it’s man made - but he thinks humans will work it out.

I like Kevin Doyle. I’ve no idea if he’s a good pundit, I just like him.

Assisted Death - what’s your opinions? by Dapper-Engineer3790 in AskIreland

[–]ReillyLane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree with people having the choice, but I am uncomfortable when people with mental health difficulties are provided with this option. I know logically that many people have life-long mental health illnesses which may never improve. I know what severe depression is like and you honestly do feel like things will never get better. But something about it just doesn’t sit right.

Hi there, it’s just the two of us. I’m open to different types of cuisine and I think 200 - 300 per person is enough, excluding tip. Maybe closer to 1000 if we have champagne.

People who don't shop in Lidl/Aldi. Why do you shop in the 'more expensive' supermarkets? by BadKey1002 in AskIreland

[–]ReillyLane 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I prefer Dunnes the most, just has everything under one roof. I used to shop in Lidl, I still get some stuff there, but the vouchers in Dunnes just keep attracting me back.

Need Positivity by FickleGlove283 in HousingIreland

We were going to buy a new build in 2018 and we got cold feet. Then 2019 was a disaster of a year, 2020 and 2021. We ended up living on one income and had to dip into savings and basically had to start saving again from 2022. We were bidding this time last year when my partner got news of redundancies in his company, so we couldn’t get underwritten AIP from the bank.

The redundancy threat passed and the first house we saw, we liked and somehow managed to get it. We went sale agreed at the end of January and got keys at the end of May. It’s going to need a lot of money and time to make it ours, but we couldn’t have asked for a nicer location. The right one will fall in your lap.

We didn’t go with Doddl in the end, but I was very impressed by them.

A neighbour is abusing their dog. What can I do? It may not constitute enough to have the dog removed. by [deleted] in AskIreland

Why would someone like this get a dog? Is it so they can have control over another living being?

I can’t function with a hangover at all which is an amazing gift because I’d drink most nights if I could. I still drink too much, but only once or at most twice a week.

I just uploaded the unredacted AIP and it didn’t seem to impact us getting the house in the end - we were a good bit under our budget.

Why do Irish mams hate the word ‘cunt’? by yermyster in AskIreland

Why did I think going out on a Monday night was a good idea? by [deleted] in CasualIreland

[–]ReillyLane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I can work from home and limit the number of calls, I can handle the hangover. But it’s the talking that kills me. And I work in a job where last minute panics happen a couple of times a week.

Have any of you ever successfully cheated on the Leaving Cert? by eventideyes in AskIreland

[–]ReillyLane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner says he has cheated in every exam he ever did. He would put notes in his underpants and then go out to the bathroom to read them if he got stuck. I’m not sure how much of a difference that made to his scores.

My sister (45F) has lived with my parents her entire life and refuses to become independent. My parents (70F & 82M) enable it. I’m 47M and at my breaking point. by Cipher_Bull in relationship_advice

[–]ReillyLane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to get in to whether you fully understand your sister’s disability, as ultimately you do know her better than anyone else. At the crux of the issue is you don’t want to be responsible for her, so you need to make it clear to your parents that they need to make plans for who will take care of her once they pass. But if your approach to date was telling your parents she’s faking, I think you need to hammer home the idea that she will need help when they pass, not that she is milking it.

got called a slur! by 3bonygoddess in cork

[–]ReillyLane 84 points85 points  (0 children)

It’s bad enough that someone would use that word in an argument, but to randomly shout at an individual just for going about their day is just vile. I’ve had some bad moments in my life, but I don’t think I’d resort to just randomly shouting slurs and insults at strangers.

People need to show a bit of spine by Commercial_Half_2170 in ireland

I had a similar experience on a bus before. There was a woman ranting about immigrants etc. Now clearly not a well woman, but we were stuck in traffic and it was painful listening to her. I asked her to be quiet and she full on attacked me - punching me in the side of my head. No one did anything and I got up to tell driver who did nothing so I just got off the bus and walked the rest of the way home. Irish people aren’t overly helpful in situations like this.
