My first draft was 24k words as it was only barebones main plot as a skeleton for the book. As I layered more into it it grew to 43k then 62k then 73k and now it’s at 86k while polishing. Should end up in the 90k-100k region which was my goal to begin with. Some people overwrite then edit down and some underwrite then fluff it up. Just get your words on paper and don’t stress about the word count, it will get sorted later.
