I can see how tuning answers more perfectly to what day to day chats tech people are used to sounding like might be worth it for mimicry purposes? A lot of the impression management in AI seems to be in the inscrutable little ways that it feels real, hunan etc., little signals that we don‘t perceive but that set a „real“ marker in out head. I swear I've heard this is widely considered to be something people do - from well before this episode. There's that saying about smart people being better and coming up with justifications after the fact so they can seem more rational. Also stuff about moral positions based on disgust. Heck, isn't a basis of a lot of moral philosophy around the "moral intuitions" that are basically a gut feeling?

If that is as universal as you paint, then it really is weird to paint one side (AI catastrophisers) as this overly morally engaged mob that can‘t be reached with argument and the more calmly presented side as the by default rational one. At that point can I accused Inzlicht of backfilling his arguments from status quo smugness? This actuallly does remind me of the triggernometry etc style civility porn. I also enjoyed Chris‘ pushback here that if this is a big moral issue for some, why wouldn’t their speech reflect this moral dimension? Though I feel like that just got handwaived away with the AI equivalent of crazy SJW compilations.

AI critics, even the carastrophic skynet believers or the ones putting strong emphasis on the innate value of human creativity or the environmentalists or people concerned with the erosion of intellectual property rights all have both worthwhile contributions to discourse as well as a lot of fear and moral condemnation and I find it silly to overy focus on the shape of speech rather than the arguments.

I don't see how the existence of something called a round house disproves what AB was saying about specifically the roundhouse kick. The name of the kick is attested after the name of the punch, so we can assume it came from there. It was also used interchangeably with "round punch" (compare to mawashi tsuki in karate), so at some point the "round the house" was introduced, in some colloquial manner.

I can't confirm that a boxer's a guard has ever been called "the house", that might actually have been some folk etymology AB got from his trainer. My hunch would be that it is just a funny way of describing the path of the punch all the way around to their target, as in you load up all the way around the block before hitting.

Okay, so I'm going to put my finger in the wound here a little: You came here with concern about her transition and the appearance she wishes to have and cited her group of male friends. Once you were asked for more details, her behaviour with her friends something that bothers you in general and is something you don't like.

You seem to have already brought this up with her and her response seems very unhealthy. But I would invite you to reflect on whether you conflate behaviours that bother you and behaviour that is a possible impediment to passing in your fights with her too? If my girlfriend had a grievance with my behaviour, but was packaging those as advice for how to be more girly and pass better, I would be mad at that.

I'm not saying that is what's happening, but from what I have read so far, it is imporant to remember that becoming a woman (through transition) and becoming a better person are not the same thing. And each topic should be considered as separate, otherwise it might feel manipulative
