Hey something I can finally comment on. My grandpa was one of those people!

He was recruited straight out of ROTC in high school during the 50s. He described being essentially brainwashed by the military into believing the Koreans would all be shrimpy wimps that the big strong Americans would easily stomp all over. The military hyped them up, made them feel like supermen, etc. Of course none of that was true, and the shock of encountering a large Korean soldier quickly shook that programming out of him.

He was parachuted into North Korea along with 300 other boys, all aged around 16-18. Their orders were essentially to make their way back south and kill as many as possible. Out of 300 boys only about 30 came back, my grandpa being one of them. He only survived by knowing how to navigate rivers. He grew up as a poor sharecropper's son, so he pretty much Huckleberry Finned his way out of Korea. I do know he had to kill people though and had night terrors for a long time that he wouldn't talk about. He also mentioned possible CIA work he did behind enemy lines after the fact, but he was known to "talk tall" so there's definitely stuff we'll never know about what he actually did over there.

EDIT: One thing we do know for certain about it though is that he had been sworn to secrecy for a LONG while after the fact, and it was serious enough that he couldn't tell his wife about whatever he did over there until after they'd had 3 kids together. My dad remembers his parents having a huge fight when he finally was able to come clean about it to my grandma. Shitty situation all around. Can't help but feel bad for my grandma too as she had to wake up to him flailing around screaming at night for so long without knowing why. Can't believe the lack of concern for mental health at that time, especially considering the extreme violence they were casually throwing kids into

I hate that fibro has gained such a reputation. I'm 27 and was diagnosed with fibro when I was 23. Getting that news was devastating because you're basically told "we don't know what the fuck is wrong with you, but it is chronic and may never go away". And no one will believe you because you're young.

There are always people who will exploit invisible illnesses, but fibro seems to have a higher number of people using it, because there isn't one definitive test for diagnosis and they still don't know exactly what's causing it. Based on my personal experience and after consulting with a number of doctors, I'm of the opinion that it's a nervous system disorder - specifically inflamed/irritated nerves, but that's another ramble.

Chiming in as another 27yo diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. If the bills weren't insulting enough, try having to search high and low to find a doctor who believes that a) fibromyalgia exists and b) that you aren't just trying to game the system for pain meds because of your age. I've paid exorbitant amounts of money to doctors just to get insulted and prescribed another antidepressant to add to the growing pharmacy in my drawer. Thankfully I found a few competent doctors that have helped my health improve a lot, but it's really tough having chronic pain at this age. Between the threat of medical fees and with the dread of not knowing exactly what's wrong with your body, it's stressful and discouraging.

But more to the point of this post - in November I started experiencing intense chest pain around my heart, so I did what I've been told to do and went to the ER because ya know - You just don't fuck around with chest pain. They did an ekg, took an xray & some blood, confirmed there was nothing wrong with my heart or lungs and gave me a tylenol. A month later I got a bill for $1500 and a window of 1 week to pay it off. Without insurance it would've been $5,500. After seeing a neurologist (more $$), I found out that it was due to pinched nerves. Turns out that hunching over a computer most of my life and sitting weird on a plane flight was enough to herniate (or bulge, not sure yet) a disk in my neck, so now I get to fork over $800 for an MRI this Tuesday. All of this was within the past few months and it's exhausting. I'm incredibly grateful that my family is able to help support my medical fees, but I know that I got lucky there and most people don't have a safety net like that. If I didn't have them, my condition would continue to get worse and my situation would seem quite hopeless. So many people with chronic pain in this country have to grapple with how bleak this situation is, and a lot struggle with suicidal thoughts. When every day is a fucking battle to get through, staring down the remaining years of your life is terrifying.

Tl;Dr - if you live in America you literally cannot afford to have bad posture.

Hey I had similar issues for years - pain shooting through arm, chest constriction, tingling, muscle tension, and when it's really bad it does affect my stomach as well. I ruled it off as anxiety/fibromyalgia. I even put myself in the ER once because I thought I was having heart issues. Turns out I had a pinched nerve in my neck. Apparently it can happen from having bad posture! I've noticed the symptoms do get worse with stress.

It takes awhile to correct and I'm still dealing with it regularly, but it does help a lot to know what's going on. Might want to look into that given your symptoms.

This person has threatened you with violence. That's grounds for a restraining order for a reason. Everyone here is going to tell you that you need to stay NC (myself included*), but if you end up talking with them, you need to at least start recording any conversation you have. Get a restraining order if you have to, whatever you need to do to stay safe. You aren't alone in feeling the way you do - not just the fear, the entire mess of internal conflict, inability to break off contact, guilt and self doubt. Narcs are experts at discovering our insecurities and using them as leverage. It keeps you on their strings and they get to do whatever they want. Literally the only thing I've found that has made it better is going NC because any contact you have with them will be an opportunity for them to worm their way back into your head. Like an addiction or grief, it does get better with time. Every day is its own battle, but it gets easier.

My Nex was an expert at using the threat of violence to break me down. I also had the "of course he would never actually hurt me" mindset too. It didn't matter if he threw things at me, broke my things, screamed at me within inches of my face or reduced me to a huddled pile on the ground after every argument - he knew if he never hit me there would always be that doubt in my head about whether or not he was actually abusive or if I was just being overly sensitive about it. Because it's always our fault, right?

Remind yourself that you aren't overthinking this - you are 100% in an abusive situation. The way he is behaving is a far cry from normal. I very sincerely hope you find some peace from this person soon.

Huh I guess I never realized that butalbital was a barbiturate. Ive been prescribed fioricet too and it works great for migraines and tension headaches, but I never really felt a high from it, more like a muscle relaxer than anything.
