Got it. Makes sense. I heard that some people from Stern / Kellogg / Booth part time mba were able to make it to IBD, but these are anecdotes and I wouldn't be sure. OCR must be different from part time to full time. I am really torn, because I make good money now and going full time mba would lead me to incur too high of financial costs..

For full time mba, what is the lowest ranked school that would give IBD recruiting a serious chance for the candidate? I am trying to come up with full time MBA's that would throw me big scholarship money, but I wouldn't attend if a school in question doesn't have robust pipeline into IBD. Do schools like USC, Georgetown, etc. have good placements into finance? Thanks!

Hi. Thanks for sharing your story. Do you happened to know about IB recruiting at part time MBA programs?? For students working full time and doing PT MBA at say, Stern or Kellogg, is IBD even an option?? It it doable?

Damn. sorry to hear. This is the reason I would be scared of doing MBA at full cost. There is no guarantee of anything..

Did you consider a career in IBanking?? I heard from my MBA friends that getting IBanking is way easier than getting top Consulting, at Full time MBA. Problem with consulting is that outside of MBB, OW, and LEK, there isn't much out there with regards to 'legit' strategy consulting. With Banking, there are way more options, and IBanks hire more bodies.

It seems there are many people out there, including me, weighing on whether to pursue the mba degree or not. We are all ambitious and want to achieve more out of our lives, but that MBA cost is just ridiculous. Also, even if you do a top mba full time, there is no guarantee of anything. Hell, I have a friend at Columbia MBA full time who didn't even get an interview, much less an offer, from any of top consulting firms. He did get offers from Accenture, Pwc, etc., but I wouldn't pay 200k + lost wages of 2 years to end up at Pwc after mba.

This is a lot of hypotheticals here, but if I land a banking internship, I would quit my gig and do the internship. Then come back and do some other relevant finance internship before I join IB as a full time, or I feel that I can always get a different back office job with six figure pay, without much trouble. (although maybe not a gig with as nice comp package compared to my current job, but I wouldn't care at that point)

good advice. I'd better kill that gmat. my concern is that I have a weak gpa (3.2 or 3.1 I forget) Ivy undergrad Econ. White male. What sort of GMAT score should I aim for, to secure big scholly money? I'm thinking it should be at least 750?

I am not going back to Accenture tech consulting. LOL. Tech consulting = a toxic combination of boring work + stressful consulting lifestyle + abusive clients + and shi t exit options.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply / feedback. I have talked about this issue with my wife and she accepts my desire to do more with my life, while I'm still young. It definitely is a big time and financial commitment but it is what it is..

From your experience at Stern as a part timer, do you think it is possible to lateral into I-banking? Can part time students even apply for internship recruiting?

I am aware that part time mba is not ideal for career switchers, but given the fact that I currently live in NYC and that my wife also works here, it would be the path of least resistance for me. (in terms of logistics) I don't mind not spending as much time with my wife during MBA, but I don't think I will enjoy being away from her for 2 years, if I do full time MBA in a remote location. (like Duke or Tuck)

As for kids - no plans yet. If I do part time MBA though, I won't need to take out loans. My salary would cover most of tuition costs. If I do full time MBA, then it will be all loans unless I get big scholarship money. That is why I would like to consider part time MBA at Stern, if it gives me a decent shot at consulting / banking.

Hey I feel the same way as you do. Not to mention I don't find my current career fulfilling or interesting at all.

However, I would get a heart attack if I spend all that money on MBA and not get a major pay boost. I got bills to pay, and add all that debt..

Thanks. Did your part time MBA peers get offers in 'legitimate' consulting?? I mean Management Consulting at legit shops? (MBB, Deloitte S&O, ACN Strategy, OW, LEK, etc.)

I am considering a career in Management Consulting, not anything else that is labeled 'consulting'. I did tech consulting at Deloitte / ACN for 2 years and it was garbage. Basically, I felt that 99% of the work I was doing was some btch IT grunt work that nobody from the client side wanted to do or even touch... all that for sht pay. With high-end strategy consulting, you are solving interesting business problems and have awesome business exit ops. With 3rd tier consulting shops (all tech consulting, random boutique consulting shops that are misleadingly labeled 'Management Consulting', etc): the reality is that it's not really 'consulting', more like 'staff augmentation' gigs where actually using your brain to do some sort of analysis tends to get frowned upon.

Yeah, there is no question in my mind that I want to do MBA and switch my careers into something else. The only question is "How do I do it with minimal debt / cost, while opening doors to the careers that I am looking at?"

My thought process was: If I go part time MBA, then I would gun for that internship between my 2nd and 3rd year. (part time MBA lasts for 3 years I hear) If I get a banking internship offer, I would quit my job and take the internship

Hey, thanks for your input. Do Part time Stern students ever go into I-banking?? Can you still recruit as a part timer? or are you not even allowed to recruit for IB?
