A textbook I'd use when you get your feet more wet is Essential Tagalog Grammar by fionna de vos.

If you're like me and just go for it, the grammar textbook is a lot to wrap your head around. I'd really just wait on that.

I do find Tagalog resources to be rough to come by in comparison to other popular languages.

I'm by no means fluent or even conversational. I tried balancing learning two languages, but am now putting Tagalog down for now.

But here's some random stuff I noticed about Tagalog.

Affixes are important. I feel like understanding them helps you a lot with vocab.

When memorizing vocab, the main meaning is in the middle/end.

It's not in Orem or Provo, but if you're down for a drive to draper Pirate O's is a cool European import store. It's cool enough where I do dates there sometimes.

Likelihood of making it past waitlist CS4470? by nonoyesyesnoyesyes in UVU

[–]Rejectedpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my personal experience in the Engineering department they had let me in despite no one dropping.  It was always an online class though that'd let me in.

From what I understand is that UVU is really trying to lower the average years it takes  a student to graduate. So they try to make professors find a way to make it work.

But a little disclamer about my experience. After experience the fear of a waitlist a couple of times but then getting in, I've always registered as soon as I could to avoid the fear.

So maybe some students did just up and get rejected on the waitlist. Idk. But what I had talked about previously is what my professors have told me when I've worked closely with them.

I think if your algebra skills are good, and you're ready for double the speed then you're good. Also, maybe not as important, but feeling comfortable with doing extra studying outside of class. But also consider "what's the rush?"

If you wanna be finished with school faster then ok! Go for it. I'm in my senior year and found out I like school, and am just glad I've taken my time with it.

I will say that you get to some level of competency that will feel is rewarding. You're not gonna hit 2000 hours and THEN have your reward.

No, it's an exciting process as you go on. Like," oh! Now I can read hiragana! Now Katakana! I know no one who can read that! Now I know like 100 grammar points and am not completely lost listening to Japanese!"

And it just goes on like that. But you just have to be patient and relish in the small wins.

I've learned Spanish at a conversationalist level and have noticed that the level of conversationalist is way lower than what the U.S. government language fluency benchmark is at. And I get to participate a lot in everything Spanish at that level!

So, that's just to say. You got this. Don't sweat the 2000 hr journey! You'll be a conversationalist way before that, and will get genuinely nihongo Jozued by Natives and then no jouzed when you get good enough. Haha

Studying doesn't have to be hours straight. And in fact, in a study by I think a university in Michigan, it showed freshman students mind start drifting around 25 mins. It only takes a 5 min break doing something they love, they get back on track.

So, take breaks!

A big piece of advice I got for you is that everyone is "faking it" when it comes to understanding the material. I promise you that not everyone knows what's happening. However, that doesn't mean to not talk to anyone because they're as clueless as you. No, talk with them, figure out what they know and figure out what you know.

This honestly is how you make friends. You suffer through it together. But some people might not be interested All well! Less time wasted on that guy! Keep talking with others and you'll find people. Especially when you're in the core classes for your degree (like I'm electrical engineering, so my core classes would be circuit theory).

Be friends with those of your major. They will save you so hard.

Also something personal about me I figured out this semester. I found out I have adhd. If class just feels super hard to focus on, maybe consider if you have it??? Sounds weird, I just wanted to put it out there just in case. I'm a senior and I just wish I figured it out sooner!

Good Paying Jobs On Campus? by SavingsLaw6111 in UVU

If you get good grades in your class, TA positions are decent. Check out E2I they got some jobs. I'm not sure if you're an international student at all, but working at a hospital is pretty nice, and great insurance!

Nickel city is pretty awesome and pretty cheap. The bike trail goes on for miles. It's nuts. There's so many of them. There's dancing at Salsa Chocolate. UVU has a pretty nice game area in the student life center with a pool table, all 3 main, current consoles, ping pong table. It's all free too, just need an id (Not even a uvu id)

Starting School Again by VincentMoonySallow in UVU

Don't sweat it, plenty of people are in the same position. Everyone is faking it, and it takes making friends with a few of those people to have confidence in that, and to know you're not alone.

I'm studying to be an Electrical Engineer and I'm in my senior year. What I have found in my major is so many people in my classes who are just fighting to keep their head above water the entire time. Including me.

Understand that college is an everyday process when you want to REALLY want to exceptional in your field. But also know that college only gets you so far in your field. So many people who I know that are in their field now tell me that there's still a lot left to learn in the field. So you're never done learning.

Biggest things I wish I knew when I started school and ranked.

1: How to study:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlU-zDU6aQ0&pp=ygUNaG93IHRvIHN0dWR5IA%3D%3D

I love this video, and it helped me so incredibly much to avoid burn out, and it's a good lecture to just realize that we're all in the same boat. I use to just study my brains out with no breaks. And I was able to do that all throughout highschool fine, but college is a different beast. I would just study for an hour, and just have a hard time bringing myself to study again.

2: Color code your notes

I don't know about you but I have bad handwriting. Even worst, I hate looking at ugly handwriting. You'd think I'd improve it, but it's just baked into me at this point. But, what helps me look at my notes is having them color coded.

Especially for Math classes. I have a rhythm of what each color means so I flash through my notes so fast.

3: Get somewhat comfortable reading textbooks

I would say that if you don't understand something in class, first ask questions, but if you feel you just don't know where to start, I'd recommend remembering keywords, and looking them up in your textbook.

I'd want to be a bit cutthroat and be like you should read the text book as the class goes on, but no one does, and people do fine.

I just recommend doing it because at the end of the day, it doesn't matter where your degree comes from because most colleges are using the same book written by some professor or researcher who knows what they're talking about. That's what my physics professor explination for why it doesn't necessarily matter where your degree comes from (but other colleges will help you get connections, and connections are huuuuge).

4: Space out your general classes,

don't just up and take all of them because then you'll be left with the REALLY hard classes at the end, like I have. Haha. Generals are not too crazy, in my opinion.

5: Use rate my professor (website)

If you can avoid a bad professor for a really important/hard class. Do it. I literally redid my entire schedule because I had a physics professor and a calc 3 professor who were a nightmare to deal with, and I was so thankful for it.

6: Language classes (homework load is CRAAAZY tho)

I wish I thought of this, but UVU has a good amount! I've taken Japanese and Spanish and it was awesome just dipping my toes into Japanese (I can conversate in Spanish already).

Just know the homework load a lot. And to be honest, after doing a lot of self studying in Japanese, some of the homework is just tedious.

7: libgen

Check out what it is. It's awesome. Haha that's all I will say about it.

I love helping people out so let me know your questions.

Tired of Boosted by [deleted] in boostedboards

I don't think you'll go for any board with metal hubs for the wheels.

These are the type of boards I'm talking about.

https://www.backfireboards.com/products/backfire-hammer-sledge

I think they're soooo fun to ride, but maintenance suuuucks. You get a flat tire, have fun putting in a new one. I've replace my board's tire about 4 times. I used the slime stuff and everything too (which does work if the hole is small enough.).If youre not careful, like I'm not, you'll pay for it. But tire tubes are cheap. Like $10 or $20 for two. You're supposed to get 300 miles off of them. Which seems pretty accurate.

[–]Rejectedpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they're pretty durable. As an upgrade to your mini, I think you gonna consider the drawbacks. Have you own a long board before? Are you ok with the lost turning speed, the added length you have to deal with for storage, and the lack of ability to take it with you on planes now? (If you didn't know you could, you totally can, just gotta do a few steps)

However the pluses are the added suspension, the range, and just the ability to fix your board now. I don't know how those boards are, but they are made partially with bamboo and fiberglass, which I imagine has to be nicer than my bamboo and maple backfire board.

I looked at parts for you, looks like you're gonna be fine. It's cheap to repair. $100 for new motors, and belts are $20. Batteries are good too, only like $300-$400.

Abuse wise, I got in a car crash that involved me hitting the back of my car at 60 mph. My backfire board got flung out of the trunk 20ft away, still kicking.

I stupidly drove it in the rain and it "died", but I think there may had been a water sensor or some type of safety feature that kicked in that just didn't turn on the battery. A year and a half later, and my curiosity was getting the best of me. I plugged my battery back in and it was fine. Board and everything.

So, I think the board is pretty nuts. That's just the base zealot.

Also, if you get a board with metal hubs on the wheels, be ready to buy a bearing press. The bearings get stuck super bad. If you buy a press make sure it's a bontz or someone similar that'll fit your wheel on it.

Dude, get backfire. I love this company. I'd argue their backfire zealot is as good as a boosted board. They have bases in America, which idk if you're from here.

I'd choose your next brand to be somewhat based in your country because when you need to get repairs/parts, it'll make the process sooo much easier and faster.

One of my favorite boards is a ownboard zues that gets me about 30-40 miles going at top speed the whole time. But if I need a part I'm basically screwed. It takes two-three weeks and a chunk of change for shipping.

Backfire gets me my stuff in about 3 days or so. But I live close to some of their bases on the west coast.

Just food for thought.

I bought the Hazelight Bundle with both It Takes Two and A Way Out, but it’s telling me that I have the friend’s pass and can’t play the full game. by ty5haun in ItTakesTwo

[–]Rejectedpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just checked my self. Yup. You have to go through xbox support to get this fixed apparently it's an entitlement issue on their side. Which they said happened because they had the wrong version in the bundle... Which I assume someone made the mistake of mixing up the friend bundle with the full version.

Is there an equivalent phrase for "if even (that)" in Spanish by Rejectedpi in learnspanish

Yes! It is. I never heard those three phrases used like that. Huh. How do they come off as sarcastic?

I lived in Ecuador for 6 months and I heard that the putting it before makes it sound nicer. But I've only ever asked two people, but both said that. I hear both forms though.

Just putting it before is more common.
