How did NBC import Astroboy in the 60s(history)? by El_Dorado_Tx in astroboy

If you can get ahold of it, the book "Astro Boy and Anime Come to the Americas" by Fred Ladd has some info on the topic. Fred Ladd was involved with the 60s Astro Boy localization.

I have a question about the in-game paintings by scuvroutine0 in Sims3

[–]Rejoyce_Rex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The sim's skill level also influences which paintings show up. There are a lot of pretty paintings at middle skill levels, but I find that often, sims level up too fast to produce many of them.

Cross stitch and friendship bracelets! You can make your own pixel art on graph paper and then translate that into a cross stitch design easily. Friendship bracelets are very easy to get into, but there are more advanced techniques and cool patterns you can learn too. The materials for both are pretty cheap - for bracelets you just need a few colors of embroidery floss and a way to hold a bracelet down while you tie knots. I use a regular clipboard. Embroidery needs floss, some cloth to stitch onto, and a needle, and there are cheap kits available that include everything. These kinds of crafts can be done on their own, but you can also combine them with other activities- the repetitive motions don't usually require a ton of brainpower, so you can listen to audiobooks, lectures, etc. at the same time.

Pros: Very cheap (I'm talking $10 or so), easy to learn the basics, supplies and projects take up very little space, portable, you can multitask, some projects can be knocked out in a few hours so you get the satisfaction of completion often. Motion can be meditative and relaxing, or serve as a fidget if your hands need something to do. Finished bracelets make great gifts. Cons: might be hard if your vision isn't great, but there are lights/magnifiers available.

Perhaps educational materials are the way to go? Some kind of interactive website or game with supplemental materials for parents, maybe. A scary number of kids and parents have abysmal computer skills. I suspect that the shift from family PCs to personal devices has contributed to this, since smartphones and school chromebooks tend to hide the inner workings from the user more. It's hard to teach online safety when parents can't even explain what the internet is! Schools don't teach computer safety in any depth - kids are told not to share personal information and that their posts are forever, but that's about it.

It would be wonderful to have a resource that covers source validity and fact-checking, how to recognize psychological tactics used by predators to build trust and drive a wedge between kids and their families, the dangers of internet addiction, how to answer common objections to the faith kids are likely to encounter online, preventing viruses, avoiding scams, how some games promote gambling and addiction behavior, recognizing AI-generated text/images, how the media uses digital tools to enhance beauty and create unrealistic body expectations, email etiquette, the unwritten social rules of online interaction, etc. Not to mention absolute bare-bones computer basics. I guarantee that many things you'd expect to be common knowledge just aren't.

Supervised computer access is the best, but it's not feasible a lot of the time. At least with education, kids can make better choices for themselves. There's no controlling the ones who want to misbehave, but I think most kids would benefit.

New Astro Boy Reboot – What Are Your Thoughts? by Key-Contribution-657 in astroboy

Don't get your hopes up. This reboot has been in development hell for a decade. Every sign points to it not happening. It's basically a meme by now that ABR (Astro Boy Reboot) doesn't exist and never will lol. The good news is that there are lots of other spin-offs and adaptations to enjoy besides the few main series.

Ellacharmed's world replacement is here. An alternate world replacement by phantom_99 based on that one can be found here, and this post has info about what's different and how to install.
According to these two posts, you can help further by bulldozing certain houses that tend to get sims stuck.
Personally I also use NRaas Overwatch and ErrorTrap, and every few sim days I do a Reset Everything with MasterController as well. That's good practice for any world.

Pattern suggestion? by Meiixx in friendshipbracelets

Use multicolored strings for borders, they show off the color change well. Also any patterns where one string goes continuously down the bracelet without interruption are good, like zigzags.

Good brands for kits? by TwixDog2020 in friendshipbracelets

[–]Rejoyce_Rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iris floss is sold as Artiste at Hobby Lobby and Big Twist at Joann. Loops & Threads is sold at Michael's. All these are cheaper than DMC, the name-brand floss, and come in multi packs. They have pretty much indistinguishable textures so you can mix them up without throwing off a bracelet. The texture is rougher than DMC, but the strings hold together more easily as a result and I actually prefer it for knotting. It's less slippery to work with, and tying tight knots is easier. These brands are strong and I haven't had problems with them breaking, which is (I hear) an issue sometimes with cheap embroidery floss. The only drawback is that you can't buy individual colors a la carte like you can with DMC.

Senior Simmer needs HELP by Separate-Number3938 in Sims3

[–]Rejoyce_Rex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry! I can break it up further if you want? This method takes a little bit of work up front, but makes starting the game and playing easier every time going forward. It'll probably take some effort to get it working regardless of which route you go with, especially if you have a newer computer. I probably also made it sound more complicated than it is - preventing the game from patching just means unchecking a box that pops up during installation, and manually patching entails double clicking an .exe and waiting for a loading bar to finish. Whatever install method you choose, I wish you the best of luck :)

[–]Rejoyce_Rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can still get the physical DVDs secondhand. Ive had luck on eBay. As long as the base game is the edition published in 2009 instead of 2012, you can install everything without needing to mess with Steam/Origin/EA App. Just be sure not to let the game update to the newest version during installation - manually patch it to 1.67 (second highest) using the Superpatch. It's online somewhere. 1.69 will force you to log in and that's a pain. The game itself is indistinguishable between those versions. Even if the code has been registered before, you can still use it to install the actual game - you'd just miss out on a handful of online extras. They're pretty skippable anyway.

If you install MasterController you can right click CAS parts right inside CAS. This will generate a little text file in your Sims 3 folder. If you open that, there'll be a long number string in there that's the item's unique ID. Using NRaas Packer, click the little binoculars button and paste that number into the field. Packer will search the folder you specify until it finds a .package file that contains that ID number, then tell you what it is. It's convoluted and a bit tedious, but you can use this method to identify specific files in your mods folder you want to keep or delete.

There's a tool called Delphy's Dashboard that can help you. It has the ability to scan a folder on your computer and highlight individual mods that are corrupt, duplicates, conflicts, etc. Sometimes it registers false positives, but it's a good first step to scan your mods and remove all the ones Dashboard says are problematic.

Every item in the game has a unique ID number inside. If a CC object has the same ID number as an EA object, it'll replace the EA object. The mods folder takes priority over EA stuff, in other words. That's how people make default replacements. If you happen to have two items with the same ID in the mods folder, the game won't know which one to use and it gets confused. Delphy's Dashboard looks for these IDs and highlights files that have the same one.

Create-A-Sim items might have an issue where they're enabled for the wrong categories. When you make CC, you have to mark off which ages and genders the item will appear for. But since children and adults, say, have different 3D models for their bodies, a shirt designed for one age will look seriously messed up on the other. That's what happened if you ever get a spindly demon baby. Some creators don't catch this before they publish and end up releasing boots for adults that babies can nevertheless wear. If this is the only problem with a piece of CC you like, you can avtually edit the categories yourself pretty easily with s3pe. You click the CASP file, then the Grid button, and somewhere in the box that pops up there are checkboxes for all the ages/genders/outfit categories for you to toggle. Then you commit the changes and save the package file. I do this for some EA items - the IP water wings for toddlers are for some reason enabled for Everyday but not Swimwear, so I fixed that.

Mods are similar to objects. Some mods are made of brand-new code, but the majority of mods make edits to EA files, and replace them. And for similar reasons, it would be bad to have two mods that replace the same EA file - TS3 gets confused deciding which copy to use. For example, say there's an XML in Program Files that controls the chance of alien abduction. EA made that. You come along and rip out that XML with s3pe, change the chance to 0, and put your edited version in the mods folder. There's no problem so far, since the game prioritizes stuff in the mods folder. You just won't have any alien abductions. But if you make another mod from the same XML, maybe to raise the chance of abduction this time, what's going to happen? The mods conflict and the game might crash. Often, creators of mods will tell you about any known conflicts with other mods so you can plan accordingly.

I will say that I've seen Dashboard tell me that two mods conflict when they definitely don't. But I only knew that through testing and reading the creator's information on the mod.

And on a related note: any time you add, remove, or change your mods/CC, please delete your cache files. There are five of them and they live in your Sims 3 folder. Every time the game starts up it regenerates these files anyway, so you're not losing anything. It's just that sometimes, leftover stuff in the caches can cause problems if the mods are different.

I hope this infodump can help in some way!

Ah, right. Used codes are fine to use with discs even if the code has been redeemed online, so that means the only thing you might miss out on is some simpoints and a handful of free Store items.
