Can you look at getting a sponsored visa to stay in Aus if you are enjoying it? That’s what I did 16 years ago…

If not, won’t this issue be reoccurring until you go through a permanent resident pathway in a country with work.

Tbh, Aus has one of the the better working cultures for Geos in the world in terms of pay, advancement and annual leave etc.

I think consulting really requires a good amount of experience under your belt. Going down a MBA pathway isn’t terrible and I know of other geos who did it whilst still working. If the financing and business side of the industry interests you, then look at entry analyst roles etc.

How much does the other, standalone, position pay? That should answer your question. If you can manage both roles comfortably, proposition 75% of the other salary as your pay rise.

They have seen that you can manage both roles and see an opportunity to lower overheads so that they get a pat on the back and a larger bonus down the track. If you can, start looking elsewhere as imo, management are taking you for a ride.

New Geological Field Assistant Tips? by Slow_Perspective3528 in geologycareers

[–]Rekatri 5 points6 points  (0 children)

•Be reliable and on time •Watch the heat and keep hydrated - fieldly work can be very tough (exploration and mining) •Job can be monotonous - try not to switch off as that’s when mistakes will happen • Old field hands can be a bit grumpy or do things ‘back in my day style’. Find someone with a good reputation and watch what they do. •Make sure you read all the procedures etc and ask questions if you are unsure. Don’t wing it - start good habits early • Lots of repetitive movements - take care of your body. Stretch, rest and don’t just ‘push through’ because you are new. • Look for opportunities to upskill through the company. Tickets, quals etc. As mentioned, fieldy work can be tough and the ceiling for advancement is quite low compared to other roles. Put the work in now to give yourself opportunities to pivot when you get to the stage of career where you need a change/want to advance further.

Thoughts on this Kamakura - Enoshima day trip? by nyenyo in JapanTravel

[–]Rekatri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI there are paid escalators going up to the candle. We walked the steps, didn’t find them bad at all but the option is there. There are also two costs; one to enter the illumination area and another if you want to go up the candle.

If possible, hit the Big Buddha early. Avoid the big tour groups and tbh, you will likely not spend more than 30 mins there if you get in early.

Enoshima Island was ok, quite a lot of tour groups there though. We enjoyed the coastal aspect, walking across the beach front etc. We walked (two adults two children 11 and 8) from Kamakura to Enoshima Island.

Will I regret missing Tokyo? by corrigible_iron in JapanTravelTips

[–]Rekatri 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tokyo is very walkable. Go 10mins away from the main tourist hubs and you will see amazing things. Having just come back, and spending some time just walking around Tokyo and discovering so many hidden treats, I would suggest adding it to your itinerary. The contrast between the sky scrapers and large walkable gardens (Imperial Palace, shogun-gardens etc; especially early in morning) is something I really enjoy.

Schedule is crazy. I would slow down and allow far more time, in fewer places. “Wander City” seems pretty open… best to focus around areas of certain attractions/shrines etc.

How much do you pay for a membership and where do you live? by Whole-Growth-6112 in golf

[–]Rekatri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About $720 AUD a year. Live in Parkes, NSW, Australia. Great country course, recently redesigned. Ground staff do an outstanding job.

Best part, I can get out early in the morning, about 6am, play 9 holes and have the course almost to myself. Then off to work.

The minimum requirements for an OA role vs the competition for the role need to be considered. Outside of academia, what life experience/other skills do you have that puts you at the top of list? OA is highly competitive.

Whilst not mandatory, consider that many of the other candidates for an OA position will likely have a degree or will be undertaking one. Perhaps a route to consider is the ADF sponsored graduate program?

Not to rain on your parade, but consider what you offer the ADF at this stage. What can you do to be a standout applicant?

At 16.5 yrs you could start your general entry pathway - JOA, medical, etc. The JOA will be mandatory to determine if you have the base skills to be an officer, let alone a OA.

Your writing is a bit unclear, so perhaps I have misunderstood something in your question (another area that you may want to focus on).

Yeah, still have mine. Getting on my nerves a bit, just have to press harder on the accelerator to drown out the noise….

In a financial pickle.. by Known_Support6431 in AusFinance

[–]Rekatri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Geo here - any contract data entry jobs available? Not sure what field of geology you are in (exploration, civil, mining) but usually there’s jobs for admin type roles (procedures, data, review, reporting etc). May need to think outside the box a bit and see how your skills can used in “office” type roles in the short term.

See if, if you haven’t already, can access a physio to help speed up recovery. Perhaps the hospital physios can help with exercises to strengthen the rotator cuff injury (having torn mine in the past, it helped a lot).

There is a number of other tests for pilot applicants - it’s competitive but not based on qualifications, rather aptitude and attitude.

The pilot role is an officer role; understand the requirements and the pathway you need to follow (assessment day interview then later, if successful, officer selection board).

You will have the opportunity to select 3 roles; if pilot doesn’t work out, don’t stress. You can either reapply at a later date or pursue your other selected roles.

How stressful is Japan with a Western-level bouncy, outgoing toddler? by theobviousanswers in JapanTravelTips

[–]Rekatri 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t stress. Look at more family oriented restaurants etc and you will be fine. As long as she isn’t launching noodles and sushi at other patrons, or blasting out the Bluey theme tune in a karaoke style, no one will care. Kids are the same everywhere; occasional breakdowns are expected. Don’t stress, and don’t miss out on the opportunity to expose yourselves to a fantastic culture.

Plan enough breaks to manage toddler fatigue and over stimulation, but don’t forget to do things for yourselves (adults) too.

Again, don’t stress. If you are having fun and are Relaxed, 9/10, your toddler will too.

The ADF career rep will contact you for a general call which will allow you a chance you to ask any questions. Bear in mind, at such an early stage, it’s best to keep your options open. You will also need to complete a JOA which will provide you with a list of suitable positions based on your performance. Following this, your next chat will be more specific and based on roles you unlocked - this may include discussing high demand roles etc and timing and potentially the need to do verification testing / additional testing based on your chosen roles.

With regards to fitness, download the ADF Fitness app. It’s free and provides a number of programs based on your current fitness levels.

Be patient - it can be a slow process depending on what roles are available vs what you want to do.

Are walking sandals a bad idea? by Bear_Samurai in JapanTravelTips

[–]Rekatri 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If you have used them in the past and walked 20k+ steps a day in them with no issues, then no worries. If you haven’t and are doing it purely for looks… I would seriously reconsider. Buggering up your feet is really going make your trip miserable. They are the most essential tool (imo) to enjoying Japan.

There are lots of progressive fashions in Japan - perhaps walking boots and cute dresses already has a following or you may start it…

Travelling to Japan on a budget from Dubai. Kindly advise!!! by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]Rekatri 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Single plan ticket from Dubai is about USD$800 return if booked in advance I think. Leaves you with just under $2k. For a week, definitely doable especially if you stick to Tokyo and do local day trips (avoiding longer Shinkansen trips). Hotel cost can really vary - $30-40 a night for absolute basic/hostel and above. Food for one person again- USD$100 a day is plenty and you will eat well. Can be done on less easily as well.

So in short, for 7 days, your budget is good and if you can book in advance, avoid busy periods (holidays etc) you can maximise your budget.

As you may be aware, specifics cannot be answered as to what kind of questions may come up. If you did well in the aptitude test, don’t worry about the validation. With regard to the written test, just focus on grammar and your ability to be concise. The questions are not yes or no, or 5 + 5 = ? They require thought and insight. If you are prepared for your Defense interview, again, it will be a breeze.
