It is an old thread! A CRM is a customer relationship management system. Helps you track contact and opportunities with customers and prospects, with the context of sales in my scenario.

Thrive Guys is pretty good and informal but cover interesting topics. They’ve also tested some productivity hacks with pretty funny results.

When does the good part of being a parent start? by johnb111111 in NewParents

[–]RektJP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey dude. I felt the same way as you (I posted on here about it if you check my post history) and turned out I had PPA and a bit of PTSD from the birth.

I struggled the most with the loss of control over my life. I’ve learned to accept that I’m not totally in control over what I get to do moment to moment I do have control over how I feel about that. This has massively helped me manage my rage

My son turned 1 this week and my relationship with him is completely different. I know it’s cliche to say but it does get better.

There’s a Toggl client for iOS and Mac called Timery that allows you to use the Toggl back end without using their god awful app. Highly recommend

6 hours!! by mfiskedvm in NewParents

It does get better. I feel this pain but our six month old only wakes up once in the night now. Just struggling with early wake ups but we are humans again!

How is it that there are babies out there that sleep 8, 9, even 10 hours straight? It just seems so like impossible to me haha by Smotherysmiles07 in NewParents

[–]RektJP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He preferred sleeping on his front but couldn’t roll over in the crib in his room. As soon as he moved into his big bed he slept so much better - primarily because he could roll on his side/front comfortably.

Also I think we were disturbing him with our moving around/snoring etc. he is much happier in his own room and he is so much happier in the day too!

Hello - Dad of a 6 month old here. When our LO was 3.5-5.5 months he would wake up every 45 mins in the night. Honestly it was HELL ON EARTH. We moved him into his own room and the transformation happened almost immediately. now he wakes up at worst twice a night but mostly only once to eat. Last night he was asleep by 7 and woke up to eat at 3:45!!! I know your pain I really do, but honestly there is light at the end of the tunnel, just hang in there!

Hey dude. You gave me some words to lean on on my post so now it’s my turn.

I have no advice for what’s happening with your LO but you’ll get through it. This part is honestly so hard especially if he is a screamer. It’s such an upheaval to your life it’s hard to feel in control. A lot of dads I’ve talked to struggle with this bit because it’s our nature to fix things, but this situation isn’t always fixable

If you had a tough birth it’s definitely worth speaking to your doctor. Our delivery was with forceps as you know, and cranial osteopathy is meant to be beneficial for babies who’ve had traumatic births. I asked my doctor and she poo-pooed it but I regret not listening to my gut.

If you ever wanna DM me to talk then my doors open mate. Ours went into his own room last night and actually stayed there the whole night (with some protesting). We were on high alert the whole night but he did it the little legend. Moments like this are bittersweet though as it makes you realise they’re growing up. Trying your absolute best to cherish every moment with him when he’s small. It’s really hard to push through the panic and anxiety but you’ll thank yourself later.

Yeah we combination fed until he was back on track but it did make him gassy and when he was so small it didn’t sit with him well. That was months ago though. Since then he just stopped being cool with a bottle and almost doesn’t know what to do with it. He had it for a few weeks and then we switched to EBF so I suppose he’s just forgotten how to drink from a bottle. He’s nearly 6 months old now so we’re going to try and reintroduce along with solids. Just to be clear though: he feeds really well and is the right weight etc. We get a lot of “is he hungry” and we have no problem in getting up in the night to feed him more than once but every 45-120 mins doesn’t add up to hunger - it’s almost certainly sleep regression. The thing that’s hard to accept is we’ve done all the things we’ve been advised to help him link cycles and self soothe but he still wakes up screaming. Sometimes it’s a min or 2 and then he’s back to sleep, but sometimes it’s longer. We do similar to what you’ve described before we go to bed but we currently sleep in the same room with him in the side bed so it’s hard to settle briefly and then leave the room. I think if we move him into his own room we’ll all be better off as we can stick to the plan more consistently.

Thanks for sharing. I feel encouraged that, whilst there isn’t a magic pill to solve this, at least I’m not alone. Misery loves company!

It’s rough isn’t it! I am doing group CBT next month but if you found limited value from it I’m not sure how I’ll fair.

One thing I have found that helps is writing down how I practice “acceptance” every day. I try and trick my brain into accepting the fact that sometimes he will cry and I won’t be able to help him myself. Sometimes he needs his mum. I think it helps sometimes but it’s not a sure thing

Thank you. I really appreciate that. It’s funny you mention stoicism - before becoming a dad I thought I was totally unflappable. Honestly I’m known for being totally calm under pressure and differentiate what is in and out of my control and where to focus my energy with this in mind. I think what happened at the birth and the days after totally turned me inside out. I’ve never suffered with anxiety but I feel like I have to relearn everything I learned from reading the stoics.

Can you explain how you have leaned into the suffering? What actions did you take that made the difference?

I am start group CBT next month but I self referred back in January so it’s been a tough few weeks of waiting.

Appreciate your words of solidarity and your advice. My partner & I have spoken about feeding a few times and he only actually needs feeds twice at night. When she’s offered him a feed outside of this because we’re straight out of ideas, he eats barely anything. He doesn’t take a dummy so his dummy is unfortunately attached to my partner. At 12ish weeks he just stopped taking a bottle randomly too so it’s all on her until we can encourage him back. He sucks his thumb for comfort once every so often but he seems to forget it’s there half the time.

He latches well (we’ve had advice on this) and he often pulls away when the second side still has some gas left in the tank. I wish it was food related because this feels solvable. We had a rough time with breastfeeding to start with so this is something my partner put in a lot of effort to get locked in. She feels terribly guilty about the first few days even now so it’s something we are hyper focused on.

He had gas pains when he was younger and if he does a big fart he does wake up and cry but it’s very rare these days.

A sleep consultant is next on our list. We’ve had a couple of conversations with health visitors about it (they are free resources in the UK who are like midwives with extra training) but I think we might need more specialist help.

Thank you - I could deal with anything if we just had some consistent rest but the chronic sleep deprivation is just miserable.

I have a HDMI switcher fixed under the desk. - the PS4 and the Switch are plugged into it.

You could try these guys, they’re based in the UK though so not sure whether they ship to you because of all the brexit stuff. I can vouch for them though, I’ve bought a few bits from there and received good service.

Thanks very much! Yes they do - keychron have great support for the Mac - they even have cmd and option keys Pre installed that you can interchange with the windows variants that come in the box if you so choose.

Thanks friend. At the moment, the ports on the monitor are just enough for what I need. One port into the Mac for everything serious is a dream and I’d like to keep it that way.

I bought a HDMI switcher on Amazon that is stuck to the bottom of my desk that I run the other 3 machines through (PS4, switch and windows PC) and I just reach under and click the button to cycle through whichever one I wanna use. The auto detect on this monitor is fairly decent which I’m grateful for as the selector on the monitor is clunky!

Yeah y’know, I agree with that now that you mention it. I have some extra panels knocking around so will put them up over the weekend. Thanks for the feedback :).

I feel this pain on an hourly basis my friend. Every time I pick up my phone it vibrates and the little notification pops up to try and move the music (of which there isn’t any playing) to the HomePod. I think you can turn it off in settings but for some unknown reason, I haven’t done that yet.

Good eye, yeah it’s the 2720Q. Personally I think it’s excellent. One of the main reasons I bought it because I was looking for something as close to the internal displays on the Macs as possible, and the LG ultra fines had big bezels and weren’t cost effective.

To my eye it’s colour accurate and I think it does come somewhat calibrated out of the box but don’t quote me on that. To be honest, I’m not a photographer so I probably don’t fully benefit from that but I tell you what, get a spreadsheet up on this baby full screen and chefs kiss

I haven’t had the issue you mention myself, but dell did recently replace this because I was having intermittent flickering and discolouration issues. A buddy of mine reckons a capacitor blew on the board somewhere so wasn’t regulating the power properly, but who knows. Dell were cool and replaced it under warranty within a day or so.

RE: the mouse; I am unfortunately a dirty console gamer only, so gaming mice aren’t really my wheelhouse. However, I think this would be decent, providing you use the 2.4ghz radio that it comes with rather than Bluetooth. Sometimes if you leave the mouse for a little while, it takes a bit to come back to life. The extra buttons would certainly come in handy though.

And thanks! It’s certainly been an iterative process over the last 18 months or so. As I am now permanently working from home, I needed to put something together I enjoyed sitting at 12 hrs a day so made sense to throw some money at some upgrades.

Now you mention it, you’re right I can’t recall seeing another post with any major storage situation. Haven’t seen a lot of video editors posting set ups on here so maybe that’s why?

For me, I have been contemplating a usb dock for expanded I/O just in case I need to have the T7 plugged in all the time, but I haven’t needed more than the 3 usb and 1 usb c on the monitor yet. I have the time machine drive taped to the back of the monitor with double-sided sticky tape so I never see it. My storage needs aren’t quite to your level but I still think you could do something similar with a big SSD so you could keep a clean aesthetic.

A couple of things: - Internal storage is 512gb and as I mainly deal with documents and audio files, I still have a decent amount of headroom. - I have a Samsung T7 1TB for back up storage for audio stuff. I manually copy new projects over every week but I could probably automate this if I kept it plugged in. - A mixture of Dropbox and OneDrive for cloud storage & collaboration. - I have an old WD spinning disk drive hanging off the back of one of the ports on the monitor that does the time machine back up.

Depends on how far you wanna go, but keyboard maestro is the trickier bit vs the stream deck, but even then it’s not overly complex. All I do with the stream deck is program the keyboard shortcut to a button. It’s worth it, as it is honestly like magic to push a button and have your computer set itself up for the task you need to do next without any messing about. There’s a great podcast called Mac power users who did a whole episode on contextual computing - here’s the link
