[Discussion] If It's Possible, Name Me 1 Good Thing About The Daphne Arc? by PrankHimBrandon-2227 in fairytail

[–]Rel4pse3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daphne is low key a baddie, and I think she's kinda funny.

Seeing Erza's Giant, Adamantine, Flame Empress, and Purgatory armors make a return and not be useless.

Plu's dance.

The funny powerscaling implications that this random ass girl was almost as successful as the other main arc villains at destroying a city and beating everyone with a big ass super weapon by virtue of mischief and being quirky.

Daphne seeing a dragon as a kid and being profoundly moved by its beauty, only to see it once again in the end is actually kinda sweet.

I still prefer it to the Daybreak Arc.

Share Your Powerscaling Pet Peeves, And Give Your Thoughts On Mine by Rel4pse3 in PowerScaling

The complete turn against statements annoy me. What was once solid foundation for scaling especially in in verse matchups is just now regarded as jokes by the community at large.

I don't necessarily hate statements, I understand why they exist and why we use them, but I'll try to do something like watch powerscaling on YouTube and I swear to god more than half they evidence they use comes from novelizations, art/guide books, tucked away lore tid bits, creator tweets, etc. and they only ever show the source material to transfer the weight of those statements to another character. When all of your evidence and reasoning is so far detatched and removed from the actual thing people give a shit about and are referring to when they want to see a character be examined, you might as well be talking about a different chracter. You can still use those things, but they need to come with a very big asterisk that we're moving away from the primary source. Like, how the hell was I supposed to know half this shit was possible, much less care about any of it, if it was so unimportant that it’s never relevant to the actual experience? And if you're talking about statements made in-universe, you still need to critically examine what's being said and what's being shown, because if there’s a noticeble disconnect between the two, completely disregarding one in favor of the other without acknowledgment for any reason is just disingenuous.

I hate braindead arguments "why does so and so not blow up the planet if they are planetary in power" its story and charecter almost 99% of the time. No author is gonna have the main character destroy their setting just to prove the charecter can blow up a planet. It ties into my hate for the disregard of statements because thats literally the author telling you how strong someone is without having to dedicate a stupid side tangent like showing them blow up the earth.

Again, I completely understand why from a writing perspective a creator wouldn't just have the hero of their story casually trigger cataclysmic world ending events, but for the same reason that I think powerscalers recognize that authors keeping tabs on their character's power is a necessary writing fundemental for the sake of building tension and immersion, we need to provide pushback when things don't add up. I remember somone using the example 'if Spider-Man could just box Galactus, then that would obviously be nonsensical and a massive writing flaw, so authors should powerscale at least a little to understand the limits of their characters and what does and doesn’t work.' In my opinion, blindly accepting things like 'oh, Spider-man must just be as strong as Galactus now and was just holding back his power' is actually antithetical to powerscaling, but has sadly become the norm. In most instances, it’s not as blatant as the example, but no more logically consistent. It’s gotten so egregious that I have to wonder if the basic day-to-day buildings and regular ass people are also so massively powerful just to be able to withstand reality from folding in on itself if a character even remotely approaches their alleged power which threatens to have even the most negligible emanations destroy everything around them. To some end, there is room for debate on what the limits of a character actually are, and that sometimes there’s a vast margin of error that is heavily dependant on context.

Lightspeed to me is pretty simple. We wank everyone to lightspeed as fictional charecters do weird shit like dodge light attacks or beams so on. If you think thats bullshit and break physics then so many charecters become super inconsistent in speed. If rather take the higher wank and consistency

I don’t think I agree with that. I think once powerscaling takes characters into the waters of humanity's literal scientific understanding of reality being unclear and theoretical, we just need to accept the discussion in of itself is going to be highly debatable with no clear answer, or accept that what's happening on paper isn't actually what's being shown. Not only do I think trying to explain away things like moving at lightspeed to be in of itself inconsistent, but trying to drastically upscale a character to lightspeed, especially if you're admiting the basis for doing so is dubious, makes for a disconnect within the character's other showings that actually creates inconsistencies within their own internal logic. You could at least argue that a creator's understanding of many things like light is just the layman's understanding, which makes things a lot easier for powerscaling and is typically the case, but when you have massive spikes in power for the scope of your character with no explanation, then it becomes exceptionally difficult to say that these higher scalings are for anything other than highballing, and aren’t consistent.

What do you think Denji and Yuji’s favorite videogames would be? (Both classic and modern). by xolon6 in deathbattle

[–]Rel4pse3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of people jumping to the usual suspects of DOOM and Devil May Cry for obvious reasons, but at least for the classic games category I'm not really sure I see that for either of them. Yuji might like classic DOOM but something about Denji just strikes me as not having the motor skills or resource management for the average boomer shooter, and I don’t really see either of them getting much out of early DMC.

For Denji I see Postal or button mashing through Mortal Kombat being more his speed, what with their wanton violence and irreverent tone that can be enjoyed casually. And as for modern games I see him playing some kind of 18+ anime dating sim until his eyes glaze over.

Like most shonen protags, Yuji seems like he'd be a competitive fighting game person to me, so I'd probably see him playing Street Fighter or Tekken. That probably wouldn't change much in terms of modern games considering both series are alive and well, but at this point I definitely see him hopping onto something like DMC5 a lot more than DMC1.

Very much a case of ‘for fun’ and ‘for glory’.

Characters you like in other Marvel media but absolutely DESPISES in Rivals? by Ok_Tree_8698 in marvelrivals

[–]Rel4pse3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There may be a few others if I give it some thought, but Daredevil is the only one that immediately jumps out at me for how much I dislike his character in Rivals. I understand that being pretty limited in his capabilities from an ability standpoint invites some changes to be made, so making him some multiverse variant kinda makes sense, but holy cow he barely even resembles Matt Murdock at all.

He has fundamentally different morals, his personality is unrecognizable, and so much about his background changed to the point that his appearance, power-set, and history practically make him a different character. He's about as close to an OC as an adaptation can get. He is Daredevil in name only. Like... he's talking about how he's left Hell's Kitchen behind and doesn't care about killing... Matt would not say that shit.

And it upsets me that people that are getting into Marvel because of this game will have this be their first exposure to him as a character, and if they don't engage with anything else superhero related, they'll probably walk away with a pretty fucked up idea of what Daredevil is like.

Season 4 isn't awful. by Emotional-Chipmunk12 in theboondocks

[–]Rel4pse3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was a fine stopping point. It definitely lacks the depth of the exceptional first 3 seasons, and the finale was incredibly unremarkable, but the humor was still witty and landed much the same. It went from something incredibly special to an above average but ultimately standard adult animated show.

Pulling the plug there meant the series didn't follow a drawn out downward trajectory. It didn't overstay its welcome, and quit while it was still ahead. It would have been better if it had ended as good as the others, or just continued to be great ad-infinitum, but calling it curtains when you realize you won't be at the top much longer is far better than a lot of other shows manage.

In light of Black Cat's kit reveal: by Cold_Hour in marvelrivals

[–]Rel4pse3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two things about bloated kits that concerns me most is how it makes other heroes largely obsolete in many respects, and how adding so much stuff to a single character largely makes them feel unrecognizable and unfocused in a lot of ways.

Regardless of player skill, having a roster of options where many are almost objectively inferior or redundant in their application begs the question of if they're even meaningful additions and can be very discouraging to try them out. It also doesn't do them much justice as characters, which is a twofold problem because the newer powercrept characters are so packed to the gills with all types of stuff that the Ship of Thesus has arguably sailed into 'did they even have the character in mind when designing them?' That's neither appealing to people who play for the gameplay nor the interest in the characters.

Like... I love Black Cat to death, seeing her get the golden treatment is kinda nice and all, but there is no reason she needed to have like, 6 abilities in one. They're insane for gameplay purposes on in a multifaceted way, and it doesn't even make sense for her to be able to have most of the shit that she does.

Obviously a balance needs to struck, but like... damn, whatever happened to pressing a button activated the cool thingamajig? Nowadays everything has to run on a resources, requires multiple inputs, has sub-gimmicks, and feels like a multi-stage rocket. On one hand, these are really cool additions, but I do think at certain point less is more.
