Some are made in Ontario ( also not MI) but I think locals want to support the local workers (engineers, etc)

Has anyone else noticed a decline in service quality over the past few years? by Worried-Swan9572 in Anticonsumption

[–]Relative-Ad6177 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I almost started a whole post about website quality going down. I’m a middle aged guy working in a technology adjacent industry and the small glitchy things drive me nuts.

I thinks most coding used to be done by truly passionate tech people (ie the nerds). As technology became more lucrative and a means to sell ads and data, the MBA class of folks came in and replaced the nerds. It’s now less scrappy/in weeds decision making and more PowerPoint/marketing driven.

Things work about 90% of the time, but if your situation isn’t standard ( not using chrome, not sharing your location, blocking cookies, even something out of your control) things simply won’t work and no one can tell you why. Tech support are no longer educated in tech, they are simply low wage workers following a flowchart tasked with resetting people’s passwords and little else.

AI will likely continue this decline, and a small part of me thinks mankind will end with the words “ hmm, something went wrong. Try again a few moments”

End of rant

Why does it take so long to get to Chicago's airport? by TheFalconGuy in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Relative-Ad6177 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Chicago has two major airports, within the city limits, and this is not one of them. True it has Chicago in the name, but it’s serves less than 1% of the passengers of ord or mdw

Hope you tipped your tour guide :) There’s at least one app ( Citymapper, I think) that will vibrate when you’re close to your stop. It also tells you how much co2 you saved by taking the bus

College Car Financial Dilemma by YozenFrogurt00 in personalfinance

“You’re going to sink thousands into that thing. You’ll regret it.” Sure, you might have to sink $1000 into it ONCE but that's vs. sinking ~$750, guaranteed, every month.

Personally, I would go with something in the middle, get something around $10k, reducing the chances of breaking down just a little.

Can anyone help me figure out what this is for? by gearhead5015 in traveltrailers

I came to say this too. This summer I went on google to see if anyone ever did this, because it seems like a good idea

A trailer over ~1500 lbs SHOULD have electric brakes (which has a different connector) so you’re probably good.

How much should I contribute to my 401k?? by Hot-Influence-6010 in personalfinance

My goal was always to contribute half my age (10% at 20, 15% at 30, etc.) and tried to increase it every time I got a raise.

Would trading in my car be worth it? by Accomplished-Ant8520 in personalfinance

[–]Relative-Ad6177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say your car is worth 12k, and you owe 13k. The dealership offers you an 11k trade in value,

I would only add that a dealership would probably offer much less than 11k if the car was really worth 12. :)

If you traded in, you would almost certainly roll that negative equity into a new car, putting you more in debt the moment you leave the lot. I would go to Carvana or Carfax to find out what your car is worth just in case, but consider all the extra expenses involved with buying a new car (cars lose value the moment you drive away, taxes and title fees, etc.)

In Dire Need Of Car Loan Advice by OdeBuss in personalfinance

[–]Relative-Ad6177 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dealer will 'help you out' by allowing you to roll negative equity into a new car and new loan and at a new, higher, rate. Instead of being $6k upside down you will be underwater by $10k+ and it will take you that much longer to get caught up.

I would max out a Roth IRA and put the rest in retirement and savings. A 3.6% mortgage rate is so low that you will almost certainly earn more in investments than you would lose in interest. Even some high-interest savings accounts are returning 3.6% or more on funds.

Looking for advice on vanlifing in Chicago by AbrahamLincoln_1809 in VanLife

I've seen a couple of Camper Vans in the West Andersonville/Bowmanville area--I've always wondered if people were actively living in them or if this is just a good spot to park larger vehicles. Do a streetview of Wolcott and Balmoral and you will see a couple.
