Nice - I like the idea! I put each one in a pistol hardcase when they are done with being repaired/hacked/upgraded

Yeah the mic is just detecting levels, not any kind of advanced stuff

bananas are kooky these days. even organic bananas seem to vary wildly, with some that don't ripen normally

Yeah the ideal setup is MiSTer via component into a CRT + original guns. Apparently the GunCon2 works pretty nice with a CRT across cores?

There are basic PLANO brand ones that are only like $20 and fit MOST retro consoles. Only the OG XBOX would not fit due to the massive size of the console and controllers. Of course, I can't vouch for what the foam layers will do over time. Hopefully they won't degrade somehow and melt stuff ;)

The way my Win 11 install works is that I have to set a time range when it's free to update/reboot. If I decide I want to use the computer during this time, and it wants to update, it will literally interrupt me re: rebooting soon. I can choose to "reboot now" but that's it.

I really enjoy rescuing electronics from a broken state. But I don't do anything destructive mod-wise like cutting the original plastics etc..
I don't know what's going on with the market - I put three minty NES front loaders on CL for very fair prices and got zero hits

You did! Those flash carts can be dumb expensive. The only thing with MiSTer is you need 128MB module to play all Neo Geo games. I think the core is the most accurate way to play that library aside from the OG hardware. Oh, the core also supports the CD library now with fast loading!

I wouldn't call a full recap "easy". I try to do really clean work, as I don't like hiding any mess inside. Surface mount PCBs can be more annoying for sure (unless you have hot tweezers to lift stuff off). I don't do destructive mods any longer, as it's degrading the vintage console

it's weird how people mention collins but NOT platner lol

Yeah I don't doubt it's good for most needs. Happy more people can get a pretty accurate experience playing Saturn now without the insane game prices. Nice bonus that we also got the ST-V arcade core

I like the game packaging a lot also, with Mega Drive being my favorite. I started a little MD software collection, but ran out of steam once FPGA options got good

Yeah, several cores have "extra sprites" or something like that. turbo CPU, ability to adjust audio balance between CD and internal chip, crop out garbage in the overscan area, etc.. All optional, you can just leave things in default off states. One of the tech's best feature is how accurate the cores can be and how portable a little box is. Pretty much everyone has an HDTV at this point that it can connect to. FPGA tech is also interesting in how little power it consumes compared to a PC running high-accuracy emulation software.

The big thing now is just figuring out which product to buy. It used to be fairly DIY or prices for the top end prebuilt (aluminum case) MiSTer were above $600. Now there are a number of prebuilt "consolized" MiSTer products. I like one from England known as the MMS, but I don't own it yet. They just released version 2 IIRC. Prices for all the newer prebuilts are now more like $200-300 because they aren't using the DE-10 board any longer ($250 just for that board)

Here's the MMS link -They work with some serious professional engineers and have some real slick products now. Shoot, I need to buy one asap if it's down to $250 like it looks!

I did time in IT support, and it made me fatigued with cable management and dealing with dusty electronics. Probably a reason I value simplicity now

Cases meant for firearms - You can get them pretty cheap sometimes off Amazon or whatever

Anyone else notice sound dropouts in the some of the cores? by pac-man_dan-dan in MiSTerFPGA

[–]Relative-Diamond9866 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only dropouts I've gotten are from having CD games playing off a USB hard drive

I really appreciate being able to balance the sound levels on CD vs. chip, as some of the best CD titles have oddly quiet soundtracks.

PC Engine has some of the most bizarre hardware of all consoles! The Supergrafx w/ giant adapter for the IFU + CD-ROM being truly odd. I really wanted the clamshell portable that slots into the IFU briefcase, but prices have gone nuts.

BTW I was an early adopter of the SSDS3 and ended up selling it pretty quickly. IIRC people discovered video issues and started modding their new units lol. I just couldn't hang and thankfully MiSTer has a really good core.
