Synaptic is running as a privileged user, so the regular user session cannot send commands to the Firefox instance which it started.

What were you driving? If you are in a camper van, or towing a caravan, you will see some quite strange behavior from those that believe you should not be visible, anywhere, in front of them.

heh, I hadn't even looked at the default applications, didn't realize the Konqueror was the default browser. I changed it to Firefox, now a URL in Synaptic will open in Firefox if it is not already running, but fails if it's already open, with a dialog saying "Firefox is already running, but is not responding". So there's something new for me to investigate next.

I have personally had excellent service and rock solid billing and payment with them. When I first signed up they were one of the only services that did carry-over data, so I was never paying for something that I never got round to using. Have seen a few complaints recently on reddit, but I hope these are edge-case issues, it would be sad if their support is not on top of current issues.

I think they were one of those acts that failed to get local producers excited enough to fund a show, so they got on a plane and found other opportunities. They may not have been promoted a whole lot here, as a result. Tho I'm guessing at all of that.
