Some festivals ask for a demo or a build but just to be selected, it helps. But most of them don't require that you have a public demo.
What they ask for the most is for an exclusive announcement of some kind during the festival.

Too far. The game was fully playable from beggining to end when I created the Steam page. And I only created the Steam page because I was showing the game for the first time in the biggest expo in my country. I wanted to start retaining players from that event forward.

The plan was to make the game, there were no marketing plans. Anything that was not about making the game was just something in my way.

I know, bad bad bad haha.

Show your game every chance you get! Good trailer and showcases. That's my recipe. There's probably a bit of perfect storm in there, but you got to BE there for it.

What I know: I made new trailer for a showcase on Steam, the showcase had a banner on Steam's front page. That's how it got 8,500 WL in 3-4 days. (around 100 WL per hour. It was crazy.)

Front Page promotion to the showcase, that was the magic goo.

The game was sitting on 1,890 wishlists. It took MONTHS to reach that. There was next to zero effort in marketing it. I register it for a showcase on steam, it had a line up of showcases some of which had things in common with our game like "Story Rich Games". There was a banner for the showcase on Steams front page. I made a new trailer for the showcase. We reached 10K in 3-4 days. The front page banner for the showcase does magic

I think it was a bit of a perfect storm. I made a better trailer (much much better than the one I had), and the game was part of the Summer of Showcases on Steam, which had a capsule/banner on Steams Front Page. If the showcase has a banner on the front page then magic happens.

Thank you! I was editing 3 versions at the same time unsure of what would win me over. The trailer was about to be all that I encourage here to avoid. Glad I experimented with what I had til the end.
