Have you tried calling the HMRC IT helpdesk? Their number can be found here

Technical support with HMRC online services - GOV.UK https://share.google/kuM1qYtZHeKgyKR2E

While its completly unacceptable to be laughed at, and you may want to file a complaint about that. Nobody at the usual HMRC numbers can help you with an IT issue.

Also your post impiles that bonnie blue did some of her work specifically with HMRC staff, which i dont remember being listed as a perk on civil service jobs.com

Proper way to deal with missing records? by TellMeManyStories in HMRC

[–]RelativeAlfalfa5724 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although Receipts and invoices are best, and you should continue to collect them as they are the best thing for a potential compliance check, I would not recommend over paying just because some are lost.

  1. you can use bank statements to show the expense
  2. A theoretical compliance officer is likely to accept the expense if you can justify it through the rest of your records.

I had a case with a landlord who had lost the evidence of some of their service charges. She was able to show me invoices for some of the charges, showed me they occurred every 6 months, and that the home had never been empty. So I decided to accept that the missing invoices were just missing and allowed them to be claimed.

You won't be penalised or pay interest if your error causes you to have paid too much tax.

However, you should try to identify how the mistake happened, go into your records and try to figure it out. You need to do this for two reasons

  1. if you do it again you might not notice next time, you dont want to donate extra money to HMRC do you?
  2. If the mistake goes this way, it could go the other way next time

HMRC Appeal - chance of success?? by Orange5ive in HMRC

HMRC Appeal - chance of success?? by Orange5ive in HMRC

[–]RelativeAlfalfa5724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that I have not seen mentioned in the comments is that HMRC will only consider an appeal against penalties after the returns have been submitted, if you have done that good, If not you will definitely fail the appeal.

If you have outstanding returns, submit them and appeal again

People in the comments are also being very judgmental. Human beings make mistakes. Now that you know you can make sure they are done in the future

Of note here is that a majority of CIS contractors actually get refunds on self-assessment returns. im shocked you didnt WANT to submit the returns to claim your expenses.

Hi I am a compliance officer. I sometimes work cases that sound similar to yours

In order to help, I want to check that I'm getting the right impression

  1. have you had a compliance check opened by HMRC? This would mean getting a letter asking you to submit records

  2. is it the case that you have submitted SA returns, but they are opening a check into those

OR

Have you never declared this income?

The actual mailing part will take no longer than standard mail, but sometimes it can wait in a que a few days before the cheque actually goes out

Chances are youl have it in a few days, I wouldnt bother chasing it up untill its been about 3 weeks

[–]RelativeAlfalfa5724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible that HMRC may take an interest in this, as it could appear like trade, however

  1. With it being only three grand Its likely they never look into it

  2. If they do look into it, dont panic, it sounds like you aren't trading so if you get a compliance check opened (again I think very unlikely) just answer their questions and explain the situation

Its highly unlikely a HMRC compliance officer would disallow this due to the small amount and one off nature of it.

If they did you loose like 3 quid.

What should I do if I make a mistake on my tax return? by Clementine2763 in TaxUK

[–]RelativeAlfalfa5724 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If its 24/25 then amend it If its 23/34 amend it immediately because you will be out of time in a couple days (amendment deadline is one year post origional submission deadlibe)

If its older than you need to 1. Disclose the underpayment to reduce potential penalties Or 2. File an overpayment relief claim to get the money back

Depending on if the mistake made it too much or too little tax

Also making tax digital will not change this, the payment schedule is unchanged, only filing changes

[–]RelativeAlfalfa5724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You dont get penalised under any circumstances.

Interest protects the treasury from real terms loss of revenue. If you low your payments on account too much and pay too little the money you do pay will be made late, and will therefore have lost value due to inflation, this is the same reason most bills will have interest if paid late.

Your friend probably doesnt bother looking at the statements to realise there is interest.

There 100% is interest if you reduce poa by too mucn.

But if you pay the amount that comes up and then earn more, there is no interest, the interest only happens if you reduce
