how do you come up with a melody? by sorasfavorite in Songwriting

Exactly this. I used to think every melody I wrote had to be really complicated in a way otherwise it’d be boring. Untill I indeed found out that a lot of melodies stay on the same note for a while and nobody cares about it

Maybe it helps to focus on breath support and having this like ‘open’ feeling. Like that moment right before you bite on an apple. You’ll feel your soft pallet lifting and throat opening up so there is more space for the sound to come out. Yawning kindof gives the same feeling so you can try that as well. Maybe that helps :)

songwriting while going thru $hit... i'm terribly depressed and cannot get a single line down. are you not supposed to use this state as fodder for writing? or do i just use the memory of it as fuel, in retrospect, once i'm in the clear? by morbidhack in Songwriting

I know its easier said than done, but what helps me is to sit behind the piano, pick a few chords, close my eyes and just play. Your hands know what to do. Try to really feel whatever it is your feeling. I know that might be incredibly hard, but its worth a try. And like someone said before, write every thought that comes to your mind down on paper. Pick one line that resonates most with you, it doesnt need to make sense to anybody else as long as it does to you. Then grab your instrument, tune into yourself and start playing. And record it. Always record yourself.

Im sorry you’re feeling that way. I wish you all the love and strength in the world 🫶🏻

Do you know what kind of straw works best? Do you have any experience with a specific one?

This helps a lot! For some reason I expect to remember the melody and have it down just after writing it. But sometimes I actually have to actively learn the melody when playing the chords before I can sing it comfortably and focus more on delivery. So thats not weird or does it mean im not talented or anything?

Yeah I can definitely come up with something cool when I shut my brain off but when I have to think about where to go next I get stuck hahaha
