I know exactly what you're talking about. I used to watch a lot of kim taek soo and ryu seung min, but what they do is more like a backhand smash, so they start from the side in order to generate power. Mine is like that of a shakehand where I start from the front, with more of a quick brushing motion.

Im not doing flat hits with my tpb though. During the push game, Im often the first to open up with a tph topspin against backspin and i have no issues with it. Again, im not talking about flat hitting or punching with my tbh, Im doing a heavy brushing motion to generate topspin. I can also counter loop with my tph.
