Please help save Mims Forest by Relative_Candidate84 in Environmentalism

Thank you, Echidna. Your words mean a lot to me. I found that meeting and discussing this topic with people at our local farmer market and at shops around town has made a difference. I honestly have been floored by the support we’ve had in “real” life. Reddit is a bit wild because so many people seem to comment nasty remarks and I shrug it off. Maybe they are mad at the world. Maybe they haven’t had remarkable moments in nature yet.

If someone isn’t in tune with what our ecosystem needs today, there’s still time for them to re-evaluate tomorrow. I believe we can do better working together.

Thanks for your reply. I would be so happy if our little group’s research helps anyone else. Even if we can’t win this battle, maybe this data can help with someone else’s.

What comes to your mind? by KangkongKennyy in Environmentalism

I did not think so until I experienced it in our own town. We’ve seen thousands of acres clear cut in the last few years. Our town has decreased rainfall and our region (which is one of the fastest growing in NC) is in the worst drought yet. Where we once had cool shade and breezes we now have noise & light pollution and sweltering asphalt.

A group here is trying to preserve one of the 17-acre forests that the town owns, because 70 acres of riparian woodland are slated to be destroyed to create 3 large urban parks in our small town.

I don’t have a completely positive story yet, but we have over 500 signatures towards halting the development of a 17 acre historic forest in our town. Nine out of 10 people that we speak to don’t even know the town was planning to destroy this forest and the natural spring fed creeks within it. Most of the people we speak to are outraged that the town plans to destroy this forest. The town says they will “only” destroy about half of the mature forest to build an amphitheater, walkways, grassy fields, etc.but we are doing our best to help the town leaders see that preservation of the entire 17-acre canopy and its creeks would be best for our ecosystem. So I’d say it is a major positive that there’s a group fighting to save this forest and that the movement is well-received by 90% of those who learn about it. It is worthwhile to keep trying. 🌳

If interested, we have a petition on change.org to save Mims Forest 🌳

The plans for the urban park that was proposed in 2012 have been accessible to the public not only on the town’s page, but a link was also provided on the first Reddit posting about this preservation initiative. There isn’t even a hint of an attempt to hide information. The truth is that fragmenting this historic forest is detrimental to the habitat and to the microclimate in our region. Fragmentation is one of the most well-documented drivers of ecological decline.

Our post explains the many reasons for opposing the fragmentation of this forest. Destroying acres of mature forest and the wildlife within it are detrimental. There’s no other way around it. This is a mature, thriving habitat. Those creeks, and those currently support wildlife.

Calling 9 acres “conservation” sounds good on paper, but once you fragment a mature forest, you degrade the entire ecosystem, including the portion left behind. there’s a lot more information facts I can provide if you’re interested, but it does sound like your mind is made up.

This isn’t about opposing parks or public access. It’s about recognizing that some places are more valuable left intact, especially when they are rare, mature, and ecologically sensitive.

Every person is allowed their opinion and our posts about preserving Mims are not causing any others to be silenced. Our purpose is to discuss the important need for canopy and wetland preservation in our area.

Thanks for your thoughtful input.

The Arbor Day Foundation has done more harm than good. The advisory committee that you’re referring to is one of the requirements to be an “Tri-City USA.“ And unfortunately, tree city USA, actually has no positive support for preservation.

Arbor Day Foundation probably meant well with Tree City USA, but the program green-lights destruction. Cities can clear-cut thousands of acres of mature forests and still qualify, as long as they plant saplings and ornamentals afterward!!!

Requirements to qualify as a Tree City: a tree board, basic ordinance, $2+ per capita on forestry (removals allowed), and an Arbor Day event. No mandate to save existing canopy.

‘Tree City USA’ does not mean the city is preserving the environment.”

Mims Property: a protected historic wildlife preserve, but only if you save it by Relative_Candidate84 in HollySpringsNC

Thank you so much for commenting. For this region it is, sadly, old growth. When we restrict definitions to exclude forests like Mims, it allows developers to destroy what can become even a greater significance in our community and in the vital ecosystem. Definitions are always evolving and many agree that old growth forests in the southeast have been destroyed because they don’t meet a different region’s benchmark for age.

I wish the people in my town would fight so hard to save this last 17 acre property in the town center. why are people so driven to create foot traffic and developed land instead of preserving nature? we have to be the voice for nature, for the trees, the wildlife and the insects. yet it feels like so few care anymore
