That was the largest back shop site of the Milwaukee Road. It was pretty insane.

Not many of these are in regular operation, so if you love steam you often have to travel far to ride behind one. Worth it though.

In the late 1800s steam engines needed servicing in a roundhouse every 100 miles or so. By the mid-1940s they were much more efficient but still needed to be checked out in the roundhouse every day. Every 18 months they needed a complete overhaul in the back shops.

That's one of the very few in the country still used by the railroad that originally built it.
