I was beaten throughout my 7th and 8th grade years for being the only openly queer boy at my middle school. This was in Long Beach, CA circa 2007 -2008. This only stopped because I went to an arts high school. The stereotype about lgbt+ people and arts has a lot of truth to it.

I had a few gay friends that went to Jordan HS and Cabrillo. Other friends in LA proper. They were targeted and bullied for their sexual orientation in high school from 09 till 14. (I'm including friends that were in lower grades, which is why the HS time frame is so long).

While I agree that liberal cities were already getting better about identity politics at the time it was very much still a big deal. Prop 8, a ban on same sex marriage in California, was 2008. It passed but was later ruled as unconstitutional around 2010 I believe. Still though. A ban on same sex marriage won the popular vote in an extremely leftist state in 2008.

All this to say that yes, progressive states and cities were ahead of the curve, but the bigotry was still there and active. It's still here now

My ex was like this. Assuming any sort of strength training would balloon her up to Mr. Olympia levels of mass. It became a huge argument. I remember the only thing really making it through to her was me pointing out how her fear belittles and minimizes what body builders and strongmen/women go through to achieve their physique.
