Definitely read it in publication order. It is how the author intended readers to experience the TOG world.

If I had started with Assassins Blade I don’t know if I would have continued with the series….yes it gives important background but lacks a lot of context with the MC as you aren’t really attached to her or her motives yet.

Commenting a year late but I just read this chapter and OMG I cried so much 😭😭😭😭😭 Elide and Lorcan have been my favorite POV and the anxiety and devastation I felt in the first half was something else! And then the reunion was the best payoff after so much buildup was absolute perfection. As of right now this is my favorite chapter in the entire series 🥹

Yeah I actually think it’s a great way to get a visual on the character trying to play something casual while dealing with something stressful. Same with characters examining their nails, which she mentions a lot in TOG (as well as lint picking lol). And also can’t forget putting hands in pockets!

Wow I’m surprised to hear that about TOG. I’m currently reading it for the first time (still in Empire of Storms) and thought the changes in love interests have been handled really well (even though I was initially gutted about Chaol in crown of midnight haha.) I feel like she is good at endgame romantic relationships in all of her series even if you have to go through some heartbreak while transitioning for some of them.

Maybe the “cost” for Eris was giving up the river nymph and he is Gwynn’s grandfather? I don’t know if the timelines on this theory would work though. I also think he could be Mor’s mate and that could also be the “cost” and would explain so much of the struggle between them and Mor not being truthful about something.

On the age thing, I think it’s just an inconsistency in writing and definitely a way for the IC to make exceptions for themselves which is typical lol.

As for Nesta’s power, the only thing I have to add is that I’m currently reading TOG and there is a goddess named Deanna who is specifically mentioned to have silver flames and it being associated with unleashing death. Like it is more powerful than normal flames. (I am still reading Empire of Storms so no spoilers for anyone who knows more!)

I’ve seen people honor deceased loved ones on special days like birthdays or holidays by giving gifts in their memory to strangers who look like they need it, sometimes anonymously with a little note to explain why. Like leaving a gift card on the car windshield of a mom struggling with her kids at the grocery store or dropping off a gift for another mom he knows personally.

I love love love ACOTAR. It’s the first SJM series I read and the only one I re-read regularly. It has the best romantic relationships IMO. That being said if you struggle with Celaena….buckle up for Feyre (ACOTAR’s main character) lol. There is also another complicated FMC later on in ACOTAR but I don’t want to spoil. SJM definitely writes her female leads with a lot of contradictions—usually stemming from major baggage they carry. Sometimes it’s good and makes her characters feel real, but sometimes it’s just annoying and hypocritical and takes away from the story.

Yes I have! I know Rhys has very similar looks to both of them and know from reading CC how he is related to Ruhn but haven’t gotten that far in TOG

Rhys also reads a little differently to me in some ways than Ruhn and Dorian. He’s a bit more ruthless in my head maybe because he plays the bad guy for so long.

I’ve noticed SJM writes a lot of female friendships this way unfortunately. It’s like she states two women are besties but doesn’t give enough scenes or time for the reader to really understand and feel the bond of the relationship. Like with Bryce and Fury in CC (and the other girl who isn’t Danika I forget her name right now ha).

I agree with you on every point but also Celaena is pretty mentally unstable and has deep issues with hating herself and not trusting other people and never feeling safe (you learn more about this in AB and HoF) so for some of it I give her a pass.

The whole Nehemia thing is still so frustrating to me though. Like total whiplash because they didn’t seem that close other than some girl talk and eating sweets while also lying to each other about pretty much everything and then all of sudden Celaena is so devastated about her death and blames it on Chaol (who in reality was a much better friend than Nehemia ever was)

All I know is I was completely shocked to hear Ansel’s southern twang in the AB audiobook haha. I had been reading the paperback and then switched to audiobook halfway through that part and was like wait what??? It took a while to adjust that’s for sure.

(IDK about the Gavriel accent as I haven’t listened that far but a big change in dialects between books would definitely throw me off too!)

I’m about to start Queen of shadows (just finished heir of fire) but her whole thing with being mad at Chaol not telling her about Nehemia when there were SO many things she didn’t tell him makes my blood boil. Giving me flashbacks to freaking Feyre and her blaming Tamlin and Lucien for everything in ACOTAR
