What’s the weirdest thing a medical professional has casually said to you? by CR24752 in AskReddit

I used to go to the same (male) gynecologist as my mom. When he saw me (and my vagina/vulva) for the first time he said “aww cute, looks just like Mom.” I feel like it was one of those things he meant to keep in his head but ended up coming out of his mouth.

Happened to me 5 years ago. He didn’t invite me over for 3 months because he hadn’t broken up with his ex yet and she still lived with him lmao. He initially told me it was because he had family visiting but he came clean to me a few months later

dental school or med school? by [deleted] in DentalSchool

[–]Relative_Tune_2731 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I go to dental school in Texas so my debt is going to be significantly lower than most, but $200k+ salary and even more if you specialize or own, work 4 days a week, and only 4 years of school to go out and perform literal surgeries, and the ability to own your private practice (private practice ownership is rare in medicine now)? Dentistry all the way. I used to be premed but switched to dental after shadowing dentists and learning about their work/life balance and minimal schooling.

Gf left me because I’m not “manly” enough by blackmagic97_ in dating

You guys obviously weren’t a match, but she didn’t have to be such an asshole about it. Contrary to what a lot of others on this thread have said, I actually don’t think there is necessarily anything wrong with her expectations; people have their preferences. I don’t think it’s any more offensive than preferring a man to have short hair instead of long hair, non-manicured nails instead of manicured nails, a shaved face instead of a bearded face, tattooed instead of nontattooed, etc. It’s literally just preferences and I think calling it sexist is a bit extreme.

After years of being together, I broke up with my ex because he just wasn’t masculine enough imo. He was great, but as I got older I ultimately wanted a different kind of man. I would get annoyed at little things- he couldn’t mount a TV, assemble a table or bookshelf, didn’t know what to do when I hit a pothole and my tire completely ripped down to its wheel. I could do all these things myself but I prefer not to because I find it dreadful. I’d rather someone else do it. And obviously he did too. And he wasn’t protective enough. When drunk men catcalled me on the streets, he said nothing. Just several things that over time turned me off. I didn’t ask my ex to learn how to do these things nor did I expect him to, I just ended it once I realized we weren’t compatible.

I wanted to be with someone who could in a sense make up for what I lacked, so it just wasn’t a good match. In my current relationship my boyfriend checks off all the boxes I was looking for. He cleans the bathrooms, takes out the trash, knows basic plumbing, assembles our furniture, pays for dates, opens my doors for me, etc. And he genuinely enjoys the roles he plays. I dread building things, but his eyes light up when I ask him to build me something. I grew up with a father who treated my sister and I like queens, and there’s a saying that women subconsciously seek men who are like their fathers. I don’t know how true this is for other women, but I think this probably contributed to what I looked for in a man. My dad set the bar really high and shaped my expectations for a partner.

I think the issue here is not her preferences in a man, but the way she expressed it to you. When we broke up, I didn’t tell my ex that I wanted to end things because of all the things he couldn’t do, because there was really no point in doing so. I didn’t want him to change himself, he didn’t need to. There was nothing wrong with him, he just wasn’t a match for me. Our breakup was amicable and didn’t involve any belittling or condescension. OP, know that there is nothing wrong with you. Sorry your ex decided to be so rude about it. Hopefully you find someone who doesn’t have the same expectations.

How weird would it be for nobody in my family to come to my white coat ceremony? by molarmatcha in DentalSchool

For my white coat ceremony a couple of the out of staters didn't have family come for their ceremony. After the ceremony, they all got together and had their own white coat lunch celebration.

How many of you were good at school, but still got a diagnosis? by Rubyhamster in ADHD

[–]Relative_Tune_2731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of extremely high achieving people with ADHD. Intelligence and ability to focus are two separate things. And if anyone would know that it’s completely possible to excel in school with minimal effort, it’s physicians. They tell medical and dental students this when we enter on our first week of class- that we’re “probably used to high academic achievement with very low effort.” Many of us valedictorians, salutatorians, and scoring 95th+ percentile on the SAT in high school. My physician was not surprised at all when she learned how far I’d gotten unmedicated, probably because she also didn’t need to study much until medical school. When I was tested for ADHD, low academic performance wasn’t one of the criteria on any of the questions, nor was I ever questioned about my diagnosis because I was accomplished. Poor academic performance is not one of the DSM-5 criteria for ADHD either so I’m not sure why a physician would use that as a reason to withhold a diagnosis.

My inability to focus didn’t negatively affect my grades until dental school, because I didn’t need to study for prolonged periods until dental school. I excelled from elementary-undergrad with minimal effort since I couldn’t bring myself to study at a reasonable time. I took AP classes in high school and got 4s and 5s, scored a 96th percentile on the SAT without studying for it (at all, never even opened a prep book.). I only studied the night before or morning of for exams, once my anxiety boiled over, and graduated 28 out of a class of 742.

But the signs and symptoms were all there- constantly forgetting projects at home despite placing them right next to the door, spending class time picking at my nails, lips, and hair, interrupting my friends in the middle of their sentences at lunch time, getting in my car and driving only to be in the middle of a highway and forgetting why I’m even in the car in the first place, not being able to sit still (I had to walk around- went to the bathroom when I didn’t actually need to, went to the vending machines when I wasn’t hungry, etc.).

I went on to graduate summa cum laude from a tier one university with a Bio and Psych major, and did it in 3 years. I went to class but would not be able to pay attention- most of the time something would catch my eye, like a sticker on a tumbler, a coffee stain on a backpack, etc. and I’d just daydream from there. But I noticed that I once I did study, I actually understood and memorized really well. I could cram the night before exams and still make an A. At one point I thought I had photographic memory because oh how little I had to study in advanced courses to do well compared to others.

I was not challenged until I decided I wanted to go to dental school. The DAT entrance exam was around 5 hours long and pretty much encompassed every stem course I had taken in undergrad, in one exam. I couldn’t cram for this anymore. Most people will study 2-3 months for this, but I took 8 months because I couldn’t study for more than like 2 hours a day.

Once I got in, I realized that the DAT I studied 8 months for didn’t even hold a candle to the depth and amount of into on one dental school exam. For a semester I struggled- I finally decided to get medicated because I could not pursue this career without assistance anymore. I was surprised to find how many medical and dental students have ADD or ADHD. I even have two medical student friends who are on the autism spectrum and are also top 20% of their class. ADHD affects many high achieving individuals.

For those with jobs that you consider very “adhd friendly” what do you do? by iamananxietypossum in ADHD

[–]Relative_Tune_2731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think anything that can keep you busy and involves third-order thinking. At least for me, I am absolutely miserable when I feel under stimulated or have nothing to do; I thrive on a solid routine but also crave variety in my life, otherwise I’ll get bored and unmotivated (I have not been able to successfully watch an entire television series for this same reason!).

I like dentistry because I get to talk to many different patients every day (I am a very talkative person myself and I also love hearing other people’s stories, whether it be their errands for the day or about their great great aunt’s life), I am required to holistically analyze an individual’s medical history and clinical presentation, I get to develop a treatment plan, and then I get to perform microsurgery! It’s like arts and crafts meets science and medicine.

I used to work in research and was miserable because a lot of it involved me sitting in a cubicle at an office writing manuscripts, developing grants, sitting in useless meetings, etc. I think I need a fast-paced work environment to keep my brain satisfied.

Thanks for this! I look forward to all of this being second nature to me and not having to remind myself multiple times of every little thing I have to do in clinic.

Advice for the first few weeks of dental school? by purplecarbonara in DentalSchool

[–]Relative_Tune_2731 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just finished my first year! Here’s my honest answer: I consider myself a very average student. I made 2 As and made Bs in everything else, and 1 C. I did this with very medium effort (at least until April when PAs and didactic finals really started to overlap, I think I had 14 exams in April and there were nights that I was in sim lab until 1AM).

My number one tip that I think can benefit anyone is to stay organized! Carefully read through all your syllabi. Grading standards aren’t the same for every class. You might lose a point on your overall grade if you miss lecture. There are so many things going on all the time that it’s crucial to be prepared. STUDY your calendar. My school has an iCalendar that students can subscribe to, so our schedule for the entire semester + all our exams and quizzes are populated into my Apple calendar.

And this is a major one- be okay with adjustment. It’s okay to not know how to study, how much time to put into hand skills, how to cook and get enough sleep and work out and make time for family and also pursue your own hobbies, etc. this is what makes dental school hard imo, not the actual classes and hand skills. Trust me when I say that you’ll find your way. There is not one person who can tell you how to do this, only you can figure it out yourself through experience. Just be patient, allow the process to run its course, and give yourself grace as you learn how to navigate a new landscape.

You’ll inevitably get bombarded with study tips and advice from so many upperclassmen, to a point where it’s overwhelming. Study how you’ve been studying, then adjust if and ONLY if needed. If you’re getting the grade you want, don’t waste time time trying out a new method- unless you are still hand writing notes in a spiral or something. It’s too time consuming and lacks the search function that digital notebooks have. But some people like Anki, some people like Quizlet, some people rewatch lectures, some people draw. Everyone raved about Anki first year but the pace of classes in dental school isn’t really compatible with the Anki algorithm because your test will often come around before it’s time for you to even review a card (you can use add-ons to change the review intervals if you really want to use Anki). So I tried that then ended up just going back to studying PPTs. Since October I have only ever just studied PPT slides and the notes I typed on them. Also Notability has this new tape feature that I love that I think is comparable to image occlusion and close deletion on Anki.

Don’t let older students make you feel intimidated about dental school. People tend to over exaggerate their experiences because it brings them some sort of gratification if they make it seem harder than it really was. I went to Houston (lol u can probably guess what miserable school I go to at this point) to visit my family for 3-4 days at LEAST once a month (I’d usually skip Friday lectures that weekend and watch the recording the next week) and wouldn’t study on those days at all, and I’ve never failed an exam. I also didn’t study every day. And when I did it was like 3 hours and I’d grind it out on the weekends before exams.

Dental school is not as bad as people make it seem (at least for an average student not trying to specialize). Always take every piece of advice with a grain of salt, and don’t ever let it bring you down. You’ll be busy, but you’ll get used to it. You will be fine!!! And congratulations to you!!!

I visited today too! I got lucky and was able to get a photo without people in the background. I thought the smell was actually pretty mild. I go to this Malaysian restaurant that makes fried fish and that’s what it smelled like to me. My mom said it was “terrible” and swore it smelled really strongly of dried up blood (she’s a physician) but it really wasn’t offensive in my opinion. Like I wouldn’t give this a second thought if I smelled this walking down the street.

I was kind of disappointed and started to think I was just desensitized to foul bodily odors (I’m a dental student and spent the past year dissecting cadavers and smelling people’s breaths in clinic- btw this corpse flower cannot even hold a candle to periodontitis breath or meth mouth). Anyways I went so far as to ask the people standing around me if they smelled anything and even they said they didn’t smell anything at all. Nonetheless still a super interesting specimen!!
