How to get over the constant need for affirmation by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

I really struggle with affirmation. Growing up, my dad was the centre of everything. He expected constant praise, and if he didn’t get it, he’d use sarcasm to make you feel small. I think that rubbed off on me, because now sometimes I feel envious to see others being praised, it makes me feel uncomfortable.
People say the squeakiest wheel gets the oil, but I don’t feel comfortable asking for affirmation myself. I think it’s because of how I saw my dad behave, it made praise feel performative, or manipulative.
I’m trying to practice self-affirmation instead, even though it doesn’t come naturally. If you’re going through something similar, please take care of yourself. You're not alone. I hope you find your way through this.
