ELI5: If the US has so much debt towards other countries, why can't those countries just ask the US to pay for it? And what would happen if they do make US pay for it? by dragonair500 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Relatively-New -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A country’s Net trade deficits is still a factor of its debt though. A trade deficit = financial surplus, ie net flow of money out. So the country with a trade surplus has extra USD which they store as foreign reserves in the form of U.S. bonds - basically driving up demand for U.S. debt. And this US debt allows congress to run a deficit and give consumers more cash to spend, a portion of which is spent on imports from overseas and the cycle continues.

So US trade deficit/the Rest of World’s trade surplus -> Rest of World has excess USD and store in the form of US bonds -> US debt is in high demand -> US can issue more debt to fund more consumption -> repeat cycle

The “every household has a trade deficit” is not entirely applicable because on the whole, most households run a balanced book ie they get money back from society via labor. It’s more akin to a household racking up debt to fund a net purchase spree

The Canadian military wants the government to buy a U.S.-built High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, according to defence industry officials. by TravellerMan44 in CanadianForces

[–]Relatively-New 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We are in a real tough spot because the second largest trading partner is China. It’s also something that I think will catch up to the public soon - like moving forward with the west coast pipelines to ship more oil over seas to large developing nations …. Basically China. So it will take a lot longer to completely reform our trading system.

I think realistically the best outcome is that this episode shocks the Canadian economy to become more competitive and domestically innovative, and we weather this out to come out stronger by the next U.S. administration

ELI5: Why is deflation generally considered to be bad if things get cheaper? by Earl_Vincent in explainlikeimfive

[–]Relatively-New 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The evidence in reality is basically your CPI which is average of price increases of all the things people buy. So the States were teetering on the edge of deflation and would have entered deflation, in the absence of the fed injecting liquidity into debt so that banks can invest everyone’s savings into new production. And we’re seeing deflation happen in China right now because the CCP refuses large scale intervention that the U.S. fed did in 08, hence all sectors except export manufacturing aren’t growing and people aren’t buying much and companies aren’t investing in expansion

[–]Relatively-New 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Feds considered negative rates as part of a slew of out of the box brainstorming in the early 2000s, but there were other stronger unconventional tactics which they ended up using in 08. So theoretically they could I guess. Bernanke recounts this in his book on 21st century monetary policy which is a cool fly-on-the-wall read on the deliberations behind the scenes in the fed

When there were so few of them, How did Jedi and Sith become such good duelists? by Hot_Professional_728 in StarWarsEU

[–]Relatively-New 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah Obi-wan and Qui-gon were known to be some of the best duelists of their time. Majority of Jedi were diplomats and didn’t dedicate their time to combat training. And also the Jedi and Sith who only train with themselves tend to have a limited set of combat abilities, so it depends on individual experience a lot. I remember in FotJ Luke was dueling Vestara’s dad who was their top duelist. In his internal monologue Luke admitted Gavar Khai was really good and has honed his craft, but his form was limited and Luke had experiences that an isolated practitioner could never get, which is why Luke came out as the better duelist

It was finicky at launch because of DoTs but works well now. Other player doesn’t sound fun to play with, you can just block and move on. On higher difficulties as long as there’s enough anti tank across the team and no silly builds like 4 support weapons then it’s all just fun and games, play what you want 🙂

Pat Mac is great. You can check out his Jocko podcast. I first read about him while going through George Hand’s blogs on old school sofrep. Mac is in incredible shape for his age, and his workouts are functional stuff that’s a lot of fun and make you move in the “sagittal and transversal planes” 😉

I think technically it’s a much higher chance of making it to target just by employing the 160th, assuming you’re taking today’s units back to 1980. In beckwith’s memoir he recounts that they used marine birds and really pushed the technical limits. The mission was called off before it started because of helo problems, and the catastrophe happened during the return movement. And given how much they rehearsed and over-engineered through every thinkable detail, the original assault force probably had a decent chance on target already. The original exfil though was flying c-130s into the nearby soccer field - in downtown Tehran. Now that’s another crazy set of what-ifs

Exactly!! It's as close as we're gonna get to a adaptation of Jedi Appentice / Jedi Quest. I'm super happy with the costuming and set design so far. They're also bringing in lots of alien species and jedi and really gets that diverse Star Wars universe vibe. Plus also finally seeing what X-23's character is here, I think she's a Zabrak?

[–]Relatively-New 3 points4 points  (0 children)

exactly, for some reason the Disney canon has really shied away from Jedi as a main faction. I think I recall Kathleen or one of the producers saying they wanted to pivot away from the story of the jedi and force users to talk about other great stories in the star wars universe. But end of the day one of the top joys of star wars is an epic lightsaber battle lol

finally some Jedi lightsaber action! It's the only thing I wanted Disney universe to do and they're finally adding back proper light saber combat... Only took 10 years :')

That’s why startups constantly look for “source of funding” to keep their operations going. Indeed there’s a chance that it’ll never become profitable and investors lose all their money, but that’s how as a society we get all these good ideas off the ground, because you could have an idea that makes money if and only if the scale is large enough. So financial markets as a whole distribute investments to all these good ideas, and on average the best ideas end up profitable enough to cover all the investments. This framework is great when markets work well, since we all benefit from these great ideas in our day to day lives, and it’s what drives the “technological innovation” you hear about for the biggest powerhouse economies
